Veterinarians have a warning for pet owners about an ingredient in some foods — including peanut butter — that can be toxic to your pet.It's a sweetener, called xylitol, that's found in different brands of peanut butter, and it can make your pet sick, or even kill them. The ingredient can also cause liver failure."It's kind of horrible to think about because it's common knowledge — everyone gives their dog peanut butter," Laura Lovely said.Lovely said it's devastating to learn her dog Sweetie's favorite snack could send her to the emergency room."Whenever she wants kind of a healthy treat, because it has a lot of protein, and when she takes her medication," Lovely said.It's a food Lovely said she and Sweetie both enjoy."Xylitol is a wonderful low calorie sweetener for you and me but it can be deadly for our dogs," veterinarian Dr. Christopher Byers said.It's not just in peanut butter. Byers said you'll find xylitol in a number of products."Certain brands of peanut butter, toothpaste, certain gums, certain breath mints," Byers said.He said your dog can be exposed to it by accident."One of the more common gums that we encounter in the emergency room is Orbit," Byers said. "Orbit is a great product, but it does contain xylitol."Within a half-hour, he said, your dog's blood sugar will start to plummet."They can be lethargic. They can collapse. They can even have seizures," Byers said.So it's essential for all dog owners to check labels, he said."I think it's awful," Lovely said. "if it's not healthy for dogs, how is it supposed to be healthy for us as well?" Byers said they see xylitol intoxication in dogs several times a week, and that if you see the signs, get your dog to the emergency room as soon as possible. 1791

Victims who endured mental, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of wealthy Palm Beach hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators can now start filing compensation claims against his estate.Earlier this month, a U.S. Virgin Islands probate judge gave the go-ahead for the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program to begin accepting claims starting on Thursday, June 25.An estimated 0 million has been allocated to the fund."Jeffrey Epstein has failed, and his victims have won," said attorney Spencer Kuvin, who represents four of Epstein's accusers. "Hopefully this is the first page of the final chapter of the Epstein saga."Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Kuvin said the fund is only open for less than a year, and money will be distributed to victims based upon their allegations that can be proven.Victims who have more evidence and more significant damages will receive more money, Kuvin said."It is imperative that anyone who believes they're a victim of Jeffrey Epstein come forward now. Your identities will remain confidential throughout the process," said Kuvin. "It is for all victims to apply. This includes women that have never come forward before. It includes women that have filed lawsuits. It includes women whose only evidence is their tragic memory of the events. Two people were wounded Wednesday night in a a shooting at the UAB Hospital-Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama, and the suspected gunman was found dead, police said.Birmingham police responded to an active shooter situation and said they found two people with gunshot wounds.During a search of the hospital, they found a suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That person has been pronounced dead.There is no threat to the community or anyone else in the hospital, police said. 489

Two people were found dead in a South Euclid, Ohio home early Saturday morning following a 12-hour standoff tied to the investigation of a Beachwood, Ohio doctor who was found shot to death on Thursday.Around 7:30 p.m Friday, SWAT converged on a second house belonging to Dr. Richard Warn in the 4300 block of Elmwood Road to serve a warrant with homicide detectives. Warn was found dead the previous day inside his Beachwood home on Brentwood Road.SWAT officers made entry into the residence using an armored vehicle and were met with gunfire. Authorities retreated and over the next 12 hours attempted to make contact with the people inside. On Saturday morning SWAT entered the house and found two white males dead inside, police said.The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is processing the scene for evidence.Police said the two men were persons of interest in the doctor's death. Their identities have not been released, and it's not known how they died.Watch the press conference regarding the SWAT standoff below: 1052
