CINCINNATI — The Scripps National Spelling Bee is suspending the 2020 national finals in National Harbor, Maryland. The Bee recognizes the important responsibility to take action that protects the health and well-being of its participants including the spellers, their families, the local sponsors, employees of The E.W. Scripps Company and others who support the event known as Bee Week. The executive order from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people until the termination of the state of emergency in Maryland as well as recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscore the decision to suspend the national finals.The suspension includes all in-person events and the live national broadcast the week of May 24. If possible, the Bee will work with local sponsors, spellers, convention partners and ESPN to reschedule the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee for later this year. The world is navigating through uncertainty, and while the timing of the national finals is just outside the eight-week window recommended by the CDC, this is the safest and most responsible action. This was a difficult decision that unfortunately will disappoint students who have spent a great deal of time studying and preparing, along with their parents and teachers who have supported them. Dangalabba, a nearly 14-foot Estuarine Crocodile, has now made its home at the Perth Zoo in Australia after being rescued after officials feared for the crocodile's safety. Dangalabba was rescued from a crocodile farm in Broome, Australia, which is clear 1,400 miles from Perth. Dangalabba then made the journey to the Perth Zoo in a climate-controlled truck. "Dangalabba’s move to Perth was no small feat," the Zoo said. "It was planned to precision and involved a climate-controlled truck to keep the crocodile as happy and comfortable as possible, whilst a roster of truck drivers drove continuously so we could complete the 2000km+ journey quickly and safely."On Thursday, Dangalabba jumped into his pool, which is kept at 80 degrees. The Perth Zoo said that the the Estuarine Crocodile was hunted intensely and was listed as a threatened species. It has since been removed from the threatened species list in Australia. 937

DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Once they jump out of the plane, they may feel light as air, but they’ll be wearing … gear that weight more than 100 pounds.”The “fear keeps you sharp,” Lind said.James Bertolino is a firefighter who parachuted there for the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
