VISTA (KNSD) - A Carlsbad man who allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl and raped a woman he met online was charged Wednesday with 17 felony counts.Michael Fangman, 47, faces between 20 and 25 years in state prison if convicted of charges involving the minor, identified only as Jane Doe 1, and the woman, identified only as Jane Doe 2.Fangman was arrested shortly before 8:25 a.m. last Friday at his home, Carlsbad police Sgt. Reid Shipley said.Carlsbad police have been investigating since March when they received the first report of sexual assault. The 16-year-old girl contacted police on March 18 and alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Fangman, who she had met online, Shipley said.The criminal complaint includes allegations that between March 11 and March 16, Jane Doe 1 was sexually assaulted and was given heroin by Fangman during that timeframe. He faces 14 counts related to Jane Doe 1, as well as three pertaining to Jane Doe 2, including forcible rape.According to the deputy district attorney, Benjamin Barlow, all of the alleged acts took place in Carlsbad in the month of March of this year. The judge ordered a no contact order with Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. (CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. McDavid faces 50 years to life behind bars, and Lovejoy could be sentenced to 25 years to life.After court, the jury foreperson, Erin Reed,  told reporters the defense version of the shooting "seemed too far-fetched." 2224

VISTA, Calif. -- Firefighters are investigating what caused a large building to catch fire in Vista Monday morning.The fire broke out around 11:20 a.m. near Emerald Drive in Vista. When firefighters arrived, the building, believed to be a large shed, was completely engulfed in flames.Authorities say it took 24 firefighters from Vista, Oceanside and Carlsbad less than 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.Due to the smoke, nearby Grapevine Elementary School kept students inside classrooms so they wouldn’t be exposed to the smoke.Firefighters say they have yet to determine what caused the fire but added that no one was injured.Video captured by Ricardo Gutierrez shows intense flames tearing through the building. 725

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Juneteenth holiday is far from new. It’s been celebrated by African Americans in the country for years.“I actually didn’t learn about that until I was an adult, just in general conversation speaking with other people,” said Erica Parham.Parham is a product of the Hampton school division in Virginia Beach area.“I wasn’t taught that in school at all,” she adds.She wants to see change. Her boys, Jaxon and Sebastian, go to Kempsville Elementary School in Virginia Beach.“They knew about Fourth of July in day care,” but they were never taught about the day in 1865 when African American slaves found out they were free."I do believe that large parts of the Virginia Department of Education curriculum are inadequate to really tell the story of slavery and racism in Virginia,” said Brian Teucke.Teucke is an 8th grade civics teacher at Page Middle School and also the president of the Gloucester Education Association."There are huge gaps in our curriculum that need to be addressed, and [they] can be by enhancing the curriculum,” he adds.The Department of Education says new history textbooks and curriculum must correspond with the standards of learning, and revising the SOLs takes about two years, meaning it will take some time before Juneteenth makes it inside textbooks.The department encourages teachers to use online resources in the classroom. Walmart will be open an hour later at most locations across the US starting November 14. The retailer curtailed shopping hours at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, and has been slowly expanding hours since then.Currently, most Walmart locations are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but on November 14, locations will remain open until 11 p.m., unless otherwise mandated by local government restrictions.Walmart also said that locations will continue operating a special shopping hour every Tuesday for customers 60 and older and those most vulnerable, starting one hour before store opening.The announcement comes as stores prepare for the busy holiday shopping season. Walmart previously announced, however, that all locations will close on Thanksgiving. 764
