BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China would continue expanding its radio and television networks coverage in the country's rural areas in the 2011-2015 period, according to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).In the five-year period, efforts would focus on ensuring access to radio and TV services in those villages with less than 20 households, the SARFT said in a statement. It noted that China's other villages which had more than 20 households were already covered by the radio and TV networks, thanks to government's continuous efforts in this regard.China's central and local governments poured over 15.7 billion yuan (2.38 billion U.S. dollars) into the upgrading of the radio and TV networks in the country's rural areas in 2006-2010.Official figures indicated that 96.31 percent and 97.23 percent of China's population had access to radio and TV services respectively in 2009. The ratio was 86.02 percent and 87.68 percent respectively in 1997.

BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study has found that many overweight women and children often underestimate how heavy they are, according to media reports Wednesday. The study, conducted by researchers from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, surveyed 111 women with the average age of 39 and 111 children aged between 7 and 13.Among the participants, about 66 percent of the women and 39 percent of the kids were overweight or obese. They were shown images of different body silhouettes representing a range of weights, including underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese and extremely obese. The research findings showed that 82 percent of obese women and 43 percent of overweight women underestimated their weight, while only 13 percent of normal weight women did so.As to the children group, about 86 percent overweight or obese kids low-balled their weight.Lead author Dr. Nicole Dumas said, "The implications of this is the overwhelming impact of obesity on children who are growing up in communities where obesity and overweight is the norm rather than the exception."  She added, "Strategies to overcome the obesity epidemic will need to address this barrier to weight loss."

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese central government in Beijing pledged Saturday that it would work to ensure smooth and safe traveling for the public as many return home to reunite with families during the Spring Festival. It is expected that some 700 million people are to travel during a 40-day Spring Festival travel period that began Wednesday, but heavy snow and icy rain, which has continued since the new year began, has disrupted traffic and cut water and power supplies to some regions in south and southwest China. The lingering freezing weather also poses great challenges to transportation and railway authorities, as they work to avoid another travel disaster, as was seen in early 2008 when unprecedented heavy snow and freezing rain inundated the south of the country, bringing traffic to a standstill at the peak holiday season.Due to this, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Saturday that it had drawn upon the experiences gained from the 2008 weather disaster, and has ordered local bureaus to begin planning precautionary measures to combat the freezing weather. It also issued orders to local departments beginning in late December to step up snow clearance and make sure expressways and key trunk lines are not closed by snow."More police will be deployed to maintain traffic order and security, and to reduce offences such as drunk driving, speeding, passenger overloading of cars and trucks, and driving while fatigued," Huang Ming, Vice Minister of Public Security, said in a press conference held in Beijing.Meanwhile, over 8,300 service stops would be established across the country in order to provide necessities such as water and medical help to drivers and migrant works returning home for the festival.China's meteorological authority forecast Saturday that snowy weather will weaken in most regions over the next three days, but the eastern areas in southwest China will continue to see more rain and snow.On Sunday, the weather forecast anticipated that moderate snow would hit some regions in Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, and Hainan, as the southwestern province of Guizhou will see more icy rain.Local authorities said nearly 10 million have been affected in Hunan after a blizzard that started Monday, which also forced the evacuation of 73,000 people. About 15 power lines were shut down and 132 roads were closed because of snow and icy rain in Guangxi. As the freezing weather makes travel on roads more difficult, railway stations are seeing surges in passenger numbers. An official with the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said nearly 4.8 million passengers took trains on Jan. 19, the first day of the travel peak season this year, up 11.9 percent compared to the corresponding day last year. The next day, over 4.9 million passengers traveled on railways, up 17.5 percent. The Nanchang railway station even saw passenger number jump 30 percent. The MOR said earlier that it would run an additional 293 pairs of trains per day during the rush period in order to meet climbing passenger demand.Further, the Vice Minister of the country's National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planning body, said the ministry would work with other government departments to implement multiple measures in maintaining a stable supply of coal, electricity, oil, and gas so that residents' demands for heating and power use can be met during the festival. The traditional Chinese Spring Festival, or chun jie in Chinese, is the country's most important festival. It falls on Feb. 3 this year. Workers nationwide enjoy a seven-day holiday that ends on Feb. 8.

SHENYANG, Feb.3, (Xinhua) -- Fire gutted Thursday a five-star hotel in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, and no casualties had been found, local officials said. The fire broke out at 0:13 a.m. at Tower B, an apartment building of the Dynasty Wanxin building complex, and the flames quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely a five-star hotel. All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties are found. The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 a.m..Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire. The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. The fire engulfed Tower A and B, with Tower C intact.
