POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) – The owner of the StoneRidge Country Club has closed its doors after nearly 60 years of operation. The closure comes after voters overwhelmingly rejected Measure A, which would have allowed for up to 25 acres of the property to be re-zoned for luxury condo development. On Wednesday, former employees were seen picking up final checks and grabbing their equipment. 10News has reached out to a spokesperson for the owner, Michael Schlesinger, but has not heard back. 510

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his promised tariffs on steel and aluminum imports -- 25% on steel, 10% on aluminum -- would be applied in a "very loving way."But at least a few states might not be feeling it.Despite Trump's adverting the tariffs as a worker protection, many businesses in states that carried him in the election, including manufacturers in the Rust Belt region, rely heavily on steel and aluminum imports, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution. Brookings analyzed how reliant states are on aluminum and steel imports as a share of total state imports.Louisiana, one of the largest importers, relies on steel and aluminum imports to support its oil and gas industries. Already, Royal Dutch Shell has said a tariff could affect its decision to develop a planned Gulf of Mexico project.Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker warned the tariffs could hurt the state's canning and beer industries.Ohio has about 11,400 workers directly employed in steel and aluminum production but 410,300 in industries that use steel and aluminum, according to Crain's Cleveland. States with these kinds of imbalances could experience greater secondhand effects than they do in benefits.According to the Brookings report, four Rust Belt states -- Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- receive 20% of the nation's total steel and aluminum imports, much of it going to Michigan's automotive and metalworking clusters. Several automotive stocks were down 2% or more after Trump's initial announcement. The Rust Belt also relies heavily on NAFTA-enabled trade with Canada and Mexico, which could be jeopardized in a trade war. Nearly 70% of US exports to Canada and Mexico are from the Rust Belt, according to Brookings.Kentucky and South Carolina, which are also home to auto manufacturing plants, are at risk from the tariffs. It could also have broader employment effects in states like South Carolina, where imports arrive. One in every 11 jobs in South Carolina depends on the state's four seaports --187,000 jobs, according to a report by CNN Money's Patrick Gillespie. The tariffs could also have broader impacts in blue states that ultimately affect one issue the President has sworn to protect: defense. Defense subcontractors in Connecticut that supply to larger defense contractors like Boeing or Lockheed Martin rely heavily on imported steel and aluminum and are at risk of having their raw material costs increase.A US Department of Commerce investigation determined that in 2017, imports of steel and aluminum goods totaled nearly billion, or about 2 percent of total US imports. Steel imports accounted for about 60% of the billion, at billion. Aluminum imports made up billion.  2750

President Donald Trump said Thursday that General Motors CEO Mary Barra made a "big mistake" by laying off thousands of workers and pledged to retaliate against the company. In a Fox News interview with Harris Faulkner, he said he was upset with GM's plan to restructure its global business, including halting production at five facilities in North America and eliminating about 14,000 jobs. He?lashed out against Barra, calling her actions "nasty.""To tell me a couple weeks before Christmas that she's going to close in Ohio and Michigan -- not acceptable to me," Trump said. "And she's either going to open fast or somebody else is going in. But General Motors is not going to be treated well."GM said in a statement Thursday that the company is focused on "our employees currently working at our impacted plants in Maryland, Michigan and Ohio."Trump's comments were only his latest in a string of highly unusual public attacks on the CEO of a major American corporation by a president.GM has said it closed plants and laid off workers to better prepare for the future. The company wants to shift production from sedans, which have fallen out of favor with Americans, to SUVs and trucks. It also wants to save money for the expensive task of inventing self-driving car technology. In a statement Thursday, GM said its "focus remains" on the employees at the plants that are closing, adding that hourly workers may be able to find jobs at other locations."We continue to produce great vehicles today for our customers while taking steps toward our vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion," the company said.Trump predicted Barra's actions to remake GM's business will fail."I think she's making a big mistake," Trump said. "They've changed the whole model of General Motors. ... I don't run a car company but all-electric is not going to work. It's wonderful to have it as a percentage of your cars but going into this model is not going to work."Trump's claim that GM has plans to stop making gasoline-powered engines isn't quite true. GM does not currently plan to go "all-electric," as Trump suggested, but Trump may not be far off. Auto industry experts believe self-driving cars will one day replace virtually all human-driven cars -- and those cars will require electric batteries to power the cars' on-board technology. He also claimed the new trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States would make business difficult for GM. He criticized the company for making some of its vehicles and parts in Mexico, and he said the new USMCA agreement will remedy that."Now the new deal, the USMCA, that I made, really makes it very uncomfortable for people to go out of the country," Trump said. "And it will be very uncomfortable for them."The USMCA will require companies to pay about the same minimum wage to their employees in each of the USMCA countries, effectively requiring GM to give its Mexican workers a raise. That could reduce some of the advantages of building vehicles in Mexico, although GM has no plans to bring back production to the United States.Ultimately, Trump said, GM's job cuts won't hurt the US economy."It doesn't really matter because Ohio is under my leadership from a national standpoint," he said. "Ohio is going to replace those jobs in like two minutes." 3355

President Donald Trump laid out his health care agenda Thursday amid a global pandemic and growing uncertainty about the future of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama-era law he vowed to replace with a much better plan, but never did. In a campaign-style visit to swing state North Carolina, the president sketched out what aides call a “vision” for quality health care at affordable prices, lower prescription drug costs and greater consumer choice. Although the Trump administration has made some progress on his health care goals, the major changes he promised have eluded him. And the clock has all but run out in Congress.Among one of the points highlighted in his executive order was his promise to make preexisting conditions covered by insurance companies. But this point is already covered by the Affordable Care Act, which the Trump administration is working to get overturned in the federal courts. 920

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Blue Sky Ecological Reserve will reopen Saturday after it temporarily closed when a four-year-old was attacked by a mountain lion, according to The California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department received a call around 2:40 p.m. Friday about a child with scratches on his back and thigh.Park officials say a family was on a hike when the incident occurred. "The child was with a lot of family members which is a good thing and it sounds like the family separated into two groups and the child may have been darting back and forth," Fish and Wildlife Public Information Officer Tim Daly said that could have made him vulnerable to the attack. The City of Poway notified the department of fish and wildlife. He was taken to the hospital, Daly said, to collect evidence in hopes of finding the mountain lion who attacked him.Daly said more than 50% of California is mountain lion habitat, adding it's important not to leave out pet food and keep pets and children close while outdoors in mountain lion territory. 1053
