SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. "This community deserves a quality neighborhood school."The campus will enroll up to 500 students and construction is expected to finish in spring 2022.The new school is funded through 2012's voter-approved Proposition Z bond measure, state schools facilities funding, and developer fees, according to San Diego Unified School District. 1231

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities Monday identified a man who died after falling from an East Village building he was trying to paint with graffiti. Alejandro Vazquez Paz, 28, died after falling from a building on the 1500 block of E Street, according to San Diego County’s Medical Examiner. The incident was reported around 8:30 in the morning after transients in the area flagged down police, leading them to the abandoned building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City leaders welcomed a new North County park Wednesday, highlighted by a specially created area for the playground's most adventurous.Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park sports five acres of turf field, two dog parks, playground and "discovery play" area, skate plaza, and San Diego's first free, public parkour area and bike pump track.The park also includes a 17,000-square-foot recreation center, featuring a gymnasium, multi-purpose building, and outdoor courtyard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Blake Davis' story is filled with chapters of love and laughter."We used to call him a smiley meatball! He was always a big guy, always in the 100th percentile in terms of growth and just really animated and really fun to be around," said Blake's mom, Leah. But at 14 months old, their seemingly healthy baby stopped breathing at the park. He was revived and rushed to the hospital. "He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, so high blood pressure of the lungs," said Rob, Blake's dad.Doctors told Rob and Leah that this was rare in children. "We were overwhelmed lost, devastated, had no clue what was going on, what his future would be, and felt totally helpless," the couple said.As the months passed inside the hospital, friends and family asked what they could do to help. The family asked that they do something kind in Blake's honor, and share the story on a Facebook page created for Blake."It was this really, really beautiful, uplifting thing happening in the world during our darkest moments," said Leah. Blake was eventually released from the hospital, but months later, his condition then worsened. He needed a lung transplant."Ultimately, on January 2 of 2019, we got the news he was unanimously accepted onto the lung transplant registry. And that was the day he passed," said Leah.But the good deeds continued. "There are a lot that don't cost a penny. Helping someone at the grocery store, planting a tree, cleaning a beach," said Leah. What started in San Diego spread across the country and then the world. "Any selfless act whether it costs money or is free, anything positive and uplifting," said Rob.The Davis family created a website to document the movement sparked by Blake. People can share kind acts inspired by Blake through the website's "good deed tracker."The family also created kindness cards people can use to help share Blake's story.
