LIBREVILLE, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo held talks here on Friday with President of Gabonese National Assembly Guy Nzouba Ndama, saying that the National People's Congress (NPC) of China is ready to step up cooperation with the parliament of Gabon to add new vigor into bilateral relations and jointly push forward friendly relations between the two countries.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature, called Gabon a true friend of China, saying that China is satisfied with the growth momentum of the bilateral relations and the two countries have seen healthy and stable development of friendly and cooperative relations since they established diplomatic ties 34 years ago.     Wu said that the two sides have achieved remarkable results in cooperation between governments, parliaments and various political parties in fields such as economy and trade, culture and education as well as public health. The two sides voiced commitment to boost the bilateral relations and enhance their cooperation to a higher level.     "The facts have already proved that the growth of the China-Gabon relations not only benefits the two countries and their people, but also helps to promote the peace and development of the world," Wu told Coniquet.     Wu arrived here on Thursday afternoon for a two-day official visit to Gabon. BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, disproved Saturday the allegations by a U.S. Treasury official that China is manipulating the exchange rates of its currency, saying the statement is untrue and misleading.     Su Ning, vice governor of the central bank, said that the allegation could sidetrack the effort to track the real cause of the financial crisis.     "President Obama -- backed by the conclusions of a broad range of economists -- believes that China is manipulating its currency," the U.S. Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner wrote to the Senate Finance Committee in documents released on Thursday.     "Also, we should avoid any excuse that might lead to the revitalization of trade protectionism. Because it will do no good to the fight against the crisis, nor will it help the healthy and stable development of the global economy," Su said.     Yi Xianrong, a researcher with the financial research center of the CASS, told Xinhua on Friday if the U.S. labeled China as a "currency manipulator," it would hurt the concerted action of fighting the global financial crisis.     It would also hamper the global efforts to shake off an economic slowdown as the Sino-U.S. economic tie had become one of the world's most important bilateral economic ties, Yi said.     According to China customs statistics, Sino-U.S. trade hit 333.74 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 10.5 percent year on year.     With a 9-percent rate, China contributed more than 20 percent of global economic growth in 2008, while the U.S. remained the world's largest economy, Yi said.     Geithner's comment was just aiming to try out the Chinese government's response, said Zuo Xiaolei, senior analyst with the Beijing-based Galaxy Securities.     Yuan appreciation and the pace of appreciation should not only be decided by trade surplus but also the status of domestic economic development, Zuo said.     "The price advantage of Chinese exports may not be a result of currency issues, but the country's lower costs of labor, resources and land," she said.     In July 2005, China abandoned a decade-old peg to the U.S. dollar and allowed its currency to appreciate by 2.1 percent. Since then, the yuan has strengthened further, rising more than 20 percent against the U.S. dollar.

ATHENS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that China hopes to push its ties with Greece to a higher level.     The Chinese government has attached great importance to its relations with Greece and has been viewing the bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, Hu said during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.     China hopes to expand the scope of shared interests with Greece and push forward bilateral cooperation in various sectors, the Chinese president said.     He suggested that the two sides set up a guideline for long-term economic cooperation and establish a more effective communication platform for enterprises on both sides. CHONGQING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China has approved the establishment of a bonded area in southwestern Chongqing Municipality in an effort to boost the opening and development of central and western regions.     Chongqing Vice Mayor Huang Qifan said Tuesday at a press conference here that the first inland bonded area had been approved by the State Council, or the Cabinet.     The 8.37-sq km Cuntan Bonded Area centers both the Cuntan Harbor and the Jiangbei International Airport. The bonded area will be completed in 2015.     "The Cuntan Bonded Area will be built into a multi-functional area with most advanced logistics and preferential policies," Huang said. "It will also become an accelerator for the opening upof central and eastern inland cities."     The Chongqing Bonded Area Development Company and the area's administration commission will start operation on Thursday. Huang did not reveal the investment for the bonded area or its operation time.     Bao Zichuan, chairman of the company, said the bonded area will focus on harbor business, air transport, foreign trade, export-oriented processing and commodity displays.     Enterprises in the bonded area will enjoy such preferential policies as tax rebates for exports and free tax for trading within the area.     So far, China has established ten such free trade zones in the coastal areas from north to south.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday the top priority of the country's 2009 agenda on economic development is to maintain a "stable and relatively fast growth", amid the grim global economic downturn.     "We will ensure a quality and fast growth of the national economy next year," Hu said while sitting down with personages outside the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) to seek their advice on the country's economic development.     He said the country would pursue an "all-rounded and sustainable" growth that stresses both quality and efficiency.     The world's fastest growing economy saw its growth slow sharply to nine percent year on year in the third quarter, the slowest pace in five years, as a result of slower export and investment growth.     The president said the country would continue to practice "active" fiscal and "moderately loose" monetary policies next year, and would in the meantime strengthen and improve macro controls according to changing conditions.     Such proactive policies is a transition made earlier this month against adverse global economic conditions from the earlier "prudent" fiscal and "tight" monetary policies aimed at curbing inflation and averting overheating.     He stressed the importance of boosting domestic demands, saying the country would bring consumption to play a bigger role in driving the economic growth, and the expansion of consumer spending would receive more prominent emphasis.     China would also increase its investment in rural areas, agriculture, and farmers "by a large extent" to guarantee the development of the agricultural sector and ensure the output of grain and other farm produce, according to the president.     Hu said the country would continue to promote economic restructuring. China has been working to reduce its heavy reliance on exports and investment over the past years.     "The country needs to take the challenges of the ongoing global financial crisis as opportunities to accelerate industrial restructuring to create new growth and foster other competitive edges," he said.     China would continue with its reform and opening up, Hu said. "The country will lose no chance to introduce reforms that can promote the development at the right time, and will take note of bringing the market into full play in allocating resources."     The country would actively develop the export-oriented sector and step up the diversification of exporting markets, Hu added.     He also said the country would stick to improving people's living conditions and building a stable society. The country would adopt "more active" employment polices next year, Hu said.     He pledged to improve urban and rural social security systems and vowed intensified efforts in supervision and inspection of food, drug and work safety.     "The country has great potential in economic development and has also accumulated strong capabilities to withstand risks over the past 30 years of reform and opening up," Hu told the non-Communist people.     The non-CPC personages said they endorsed the CPC and government's judgment on current situation as well as plans on next year's economic development.
