CARLSBAD, California — A California says it lost thousands in a bank scam that started with a notice about fraudulent debit charges.Krystal, who did not want to share her last name, lives in Carlsbad with her husband and their dog, Otis. Her husband is in the Marines and was recently in dive school in Florida. During that time, he received a call from what they thought was a USAA representative.USAA is a financial institution that serves primarily military families.“They told him there were fraudulent charges on his debit card and if they weren’t from him, that they’ll cancel the card and give him a new one and it will be sent to him,” Krystal said.She said it was from a USAA phone number.“They sent him a code through via text and had him repeat it,” Krystal said. “You could tell it was from USAA because there are previous text messages from USAA from other times they sent us the code,” Krystal said.Krystal said the caller said they needed to give her husband a new pin number and asked for the current one. In hindsight, it was a red flag, but at the time, he was busy evacuating from Hurricane Michael. The call sounded legitimate, even using the same song USAA uses when her husband was put on hold.“They had his debit card number. They mentioned me as a second account holder,” Krystal said.Before they knew it, their checking account was drained of more than ,800.“[I was] very angry, very heartbroken. Panicking,” Krystal said.Stephen Cobb with cybersecurity firm ESET said technology to make phone numbers look like a different one is increasingly used by crooks."A phone today is just a computer endpoint on a network and as such, its identity can be spoofed,” Cobb said.Krystal’s fraud claim was first denied by USAA, but she kept calling the bank, determined to get answers.“I finally got a hold of somebody in the financial crime department. She was very apologetic [and] said this isn’t the first time she’s heard of this today,” Krystal said.Krystal said she found her debit card was used in multiple transactions on the East Coast. The scammer has not been found.She was finally able to get a refund but has since switched banks. Now if she gets a call from a financial institution, she asks for a call back number to make sure it is real.“It makes me really angry and really sick. I feel really sick to my stomach about it. It makes me think of people that are veterans. What if their money was taken away?” Krystal said.On its website, USAA said this cybercriminal activity is on the rise. Kelly still found time to talk to fans, give autographs and to meet an underage girl he later invited to his home, according to prosecutors who depicted the R&B star as manipulative and sometimes violent.Other accusers included a girl who met Kelly at her 16th birthday party and a hairdresser who expected to braid the singer's hair only to find that he wanted oral sex instead, court documents said.The accounts emerged Saturday as Kelly made his first court appearance since being accused of sexually abusing four people in a case that could produce another #MeToo reckoning for a celebrity.A judge gave Kelly a chance to go free while awaiting trial, setting bond at million. CHANDLER, Ariz. - A woman in the East Valley of Arizona was stung by bees more than 200 times and a few fellow runners just happened to be in the right place--and the right time--to help.Usually cooler weather keeps bees away, but with more trees and flowers in bloom after the recent rain, experts say the bees are sticking around."I was taking my dog out for a walk, it's a normal route," said Marisa Brazil.Her daily routine along Paseo Trail in Chandler took a terrifying turn Monday morning."She was starting to flail her arms and I kind of looked at my best friend, Julie, and said, 'she's either having a really good time or something's happening,'" Brazil said.It did not take long for both women to realize something terrible was happening to the runner ahead of them on the trail."She was really screaming, like loud," said Julie Sternberg. The trained lifeguard ran to help while Brazil called 911."I tried to run up the other side and then some bees came at me," Sternberg said.Sternberg was stung on her head as the bees forced her back. She then saw two other strangers battling their way forward."They kept retreating. So at that point once I figured out there was bees, I figured out that's why. I saw one guy kept moving back," said Sternberg. "She was still screaming the whole entire time, so it was pretty scary," said Brazil.First responders eventually took over. The woman who was stung posted to Facebook from her hospital bed, thanking the strangers who tried to help. The woman who was stung is expected to recover.
