SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and supporters of Jonathan Coronel stood at the San Diego County Administration Center Friday, demanding justice for the past three years without their loved one.Coronel was shot 16 times by San Diego Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Villanueva in Vista July of 2017."It has been three years of trauma and dehumanization," Coronel's Cousin Rocio Zamora said.Zamora urged defunding the Sheriff's Department, and transferring that money to underserved communities, "to transform them to community empowerment zones. The safest communities don't have the most cops they have the most resources."She also demanded police officers be taken out of schools and replaced with counselors. These demands shouted at a time when law enforcement is under the microscope.Law enforcement said Coronel was a documented gang member with a warrant. The morning Coronel died law enforcement said he ran from deputies. Once Villanueva caught up to Coronel, law enforcement said Coronel concealed his hand in his shirt, forcing Villanueva to fire.A witness said Coronel took off his shirt to show he was unarmed.Law enforcement confirmed Coronel was unarmed at the time of his death."Deputy Christopher Villanueva is the most dangerous gang member in Vista. He is the one who shot Sergio Weick 28 plus times," Zamora said.Sergio Weick, 33, was shot and killed August of 2016 by Villanueva.Law enforcement said he was running from deputies, had knives, and threatened deputies, forcing Villanueva to shoot. Law enforcement said he was also a documented gang member with a warrant.Back on the steps of the county administration building, Zamora said they are not anywhere near ending their fight for justice, "three years and we are only growing bigger, we are only getting louder." 1787

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father of three boys, Ben Walrath, was excited when he heard baseball practice was starting up again."There's only so much Fortnite they can play," Walrath said, his son Austin, 10, chiming in, "before I get bored." "Before we have to do something different," Walrath continued. He had a talk with his boys about how practice is going to be different to protect them from coronavirus. When quizzed, his sons answered correctly, "no dugout during practice," Austin said. "Stay six feet away." Walrath reminded them, "we're not going to be doing high fives and stuff like that... and no games right away."While Austin wasn't enthused about the new protocol, he was excited to see his friends for the first time in months at practice Monday.President of Sweetwater Valley Little League Arturo Maldonado said they are rolling out practice in three phases. Monday was the beginning of phase one with kids ages 10-15. This weekend phase two will start for kids ages 7-10 and as soon as June 26 the youngest ball players ages 4-7 will get to come back to practice."Everybody's learning how things are going to be done out in the field and that's why we're doing it in three different phases so that we can make adjustments," Maldonado said.He said managers and coaches will be wearing masks, but the kids don't have to. He said the kids will be encouraged to socially distance. There won't be any hugging, high-fives, or sunflower seeds and hand sanitizer is always close by. The dugout will be expanded to the stands, Maldonado said, to accommodate for social distancing.Parents aren't allowed at practice yet and sick players are encouraged to stay home.Monday Walrath said the boys played wiffleball, just as they would any other day."We're not going to change the game of baseball. We're changing how we're watching the game of baseball," Maldonado said.Walrath said safety is a priority for every family. "There's always health concerns in sports, whether that's normal injury concerns. Coronavirus adds a new twist to health concerns and just like with anything else I think this is a personal risk decision for each and every one of our families," Walrath said.Sweetwater Valley Little League has a history of big wins, making it to the Little League World Series in 2015, and Regionals in 2019.Families hope to get their kids some social interaction after months of staying at home and keep them safe. 2426

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fifty years ago this week, millions of Americans sat glued to their televisions as the first humans prepared to step on the moon. The defining moment was filled with both excitement and tension, happening less than a decade after President John F. Kennedy set the ambitious goal. "I was a young fighter pilot in Germany at the time, and when I heard him say we were going to go the moon within the decade of 1969, that was eight-and-a-half years, I said man, I mean, we can't possibly do that," said Charlie Duke. Little did Duke know he would have a front-row seat to the historic mission, becoming an astronaut in 1966.During the Apollo 11 mission, Duke served as Capsule Commander (CAPCOM), meaning he communicated directly with the Apollo 11 astronauts. Duke says after the July 16, 1969 launch everything was initially running smoothly."We gave them a-go for descent, and they started the engine and then almost immediately we started having this series of problems," remembers Duke.Communications were going in and out, and the landing computer was signaling an overload."The tension with all of these problems building up began to mount in Mission Control so the closer we got to the ground, or to the moon, the more tense it became," said Duke. The crew was off target for the landing, forced to fly manually to find a safe spot to touch down at, with only minutes left of fuel. "It was really tense, so you hung on every foot of altitude and every second at the end there, but we made it, with a few seconds to go," said Duke. Duke says once he heard the following words from Neil Armstrong it was as if a big balloon popped, dissolving all of the tension in Mission Control. "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said as the Eagle landing module reached the moon's surface on July 20."Roger, Twank ...Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue here. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!" Duke replied.Duke was honored by the San Diego Air & Space Museum for his role in the Apollo 11 mission, as well as his lunar landing in 1972."When I stepped on the moon, it was, I'm on the moon. The beauty of it, the wonder, and excitement and the adventure, all of those emotions and feelings rolled into one," said Duke. The San Diego Air & Space Museum will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on Saturday, June 20. Family-friendly event kicks off at 6 p.m.Special presentation of a new documentary at 8:30 p.m. 2538

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Haley Moore went from being bullied to being on a professional sports tour.Friday, Moore celebrated in Rancho Bernardo, becoming one of 45 women qualified for the 2020 LPGA Tour."If you want to be a professional golfer, it takes a lot of hard work, and you just have to be patient out there, you're not always going to have the best days," Moore says.RELATED:Strasburg, Leonard MVP awards mark special San Diego State honorPadres star turns frightening life event into 'Comedy for a Cause'San Diego boxer sets sights on Tokyo 2020 OlympicsAt only 20 years old, Moore broke into the highly competitive tournament by finishing tied 11th in the LPGA Q-Series tournament. While she's in the spotlight now, she says it hasn't always been like this. Moore is vocal about how she was bullied when she was younger."I think it was more of a motivation when I was bullied, at first it was very hard," Moore recalls. "I didn't want to play this game anymore. I was depressed."With support from her family — and golf family — Moore zoned in on her dream and focused past any negativity."Don't let them control your life, with me, just putting it aside and focusing on what my main goal was to get on the pro tour, really, helped me, motivated me from it," Moore said. That focus rewarded with the title of "pro golfer" now in front of her name."It was a dream come true for me, I'm just happy with the way it all ended, excited for the new journey and everything," Moore says. 1489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Do you know how to survive a rip current? The common occurrence at San Diego beaches accounts for 80 percent of all rescues, the U.S. Lifesaving Association reports. Rip currents are currents of water that flow out from shore, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers away from land, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 63 people in California died in rip currents between 1999 and 2013, second only to Florida in fatalities. You can greatly increase your chances of survival by swimming at a beach with lifeguards, the USLA says. The odds of drowning while swimming at a USLA-affiliated lifeguard protected beach is 1 in 18 million, the group claims.Anyone in the water - or thinking about getting into the water - should look for a gap of seemingly calm water between areas of breaking waves, a difference in water color, or a line of foam or debris moving out to sea. What to do if you’re caught in a rip current:*Don’t try to swim against the current*Swim parallel to the shoreline before trying to head back in to the beach*Float or tread water if the current circulates back toward the shore*If you can’t make it back to shore, yell and wave for helpLifeguards also encourage you to call 911 or get help from a professional. Many people have died trying to rescue rip current victims, NOAA experts say.Need more information? NOAA has an online training program called Break the Grip of the Rip. 1457
