NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Tennessee woman is calling for more oversight on the U.S. Small Business Administration loan program, saying it has made people an easy target for thieves.Pat Golab has been following the trail left behind by the people responsible for stealing her identity back in August. The last time she spoke about what happened, she shared that she was approved for the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). Not only did Golab not apply, but she doesn't have a business of her own.In the months that followed, Golab filed three reports with the SBA and the Office of the Attorney General. She finally managed to get her hands on a copy of the application and says what she found should put others on alert.Thieves used her name, address, and social security number to apply for the ,000 loan, but left virtually everything else blank.Simple questions like ethnicity, gender, and veteran status went ignored. Golab says that should have been a red flag, but it only got worse from there.“Things like, how long have you been in business? Nothing,” said Golab.Questions on prior business history and bankruptcies were left blank. These thieves claimed 12 employees were working, but also say they plan to retain none.“The application never should have been approved,” Golab said.So why was a program designed to help businesses keep their employee, paying out thousands of dollars to businesses who don’t plan on retaining anyone? That’s the question Golab has yet to have answered.“I looked on the SBA’s website on how to complete the application and one of the first things it says is every question must be answered. If not, the application will be returned and you’ll come back and you’ll start at the bottom. Which was not what they did at all,” Golab said.The loan in Golab’s name has been deferred, but she still gets letters from the SBA saying they need her to make 0 payments each month to cover the accruing interest.We contacted the SBA once again on Monday and they tell us they can’t speak in detail about individual claims.They issued this statement:“The SBA Office of Inspector General and the agency’s federal partners are working diligently to resolve Economic Injury Disaster Loan and PPP fraud incidents.Additionally, the SBA does not comment on individual borrowers. This makes it even more challenging to catch them in the act, and almost impossible if they are beyond the jurisdiction of local and state law enforcement.With how fast federal officials had to roll out money for unemployment programs and the SBA loans, Schmidt says it makes sense why some applications like those filed in Golab’s name could slip through the cracks.“It’s a growing problem. It's a problem that is only solved by education,” Schmidt said.If they haven’t tried already, Schmidt says thieves will send phishing emails and or calls, claiming to be one of these agencies you trust. Whatever you do, do not fall for it.Pay close attention to the email address or phone number. If you’re at all skeptical about who you’re talking to, try calling the agency back yourself to verify if they made the call in the first place.Around the holiday season, thieves will also try and use the names of people close to you. They may give you a story about a relative falling on hard time needing money. The same advice applies again. Try contacting the relative yourself, to avoid sending money to someone you do not know.Thieves may also try and convince you that your Amazon package is delayed and they need more information to verify where to send it. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Six Metro Nashville police officers have been commended for their heroic response early Christmas morning when an RV exploded. The officers responded to the call of gunfire and upon hearing an RV play a recorded message saying the vehicle contained a bomb, took several measures to evacuate as many people as possible from Second Avenue.City leaders applauded the officers for their swift action, putting the lives of others ahead of their own. "They immediately began knocking on doors, not knowing when the bomb would go off," Chief John Drake said at a press conference Saturday night. "They didn't think of themselves...they thought of the citizens of Nashville. He said he didn't immediately notice the RV, but thought it may have been someone visiting town for Christmas. The officers contacted six to seven apartments and asked residents to evacuate.After some time, music began to play from the RV. Once the song finished, the announcement of a bomb continued. Officer Luellen said once the announcement resumed, he saw a man walking a dog. The man was notified of the warning and shortly after the RV exploded. Luellen said he was knocked over and the man was in shock.The second officer who responded to the scene was Brenna Hosey. She said when she heard the announcement coming from the RV she was confused. "Is this really what we're hearing right now," Hosey recalled thinking. She then began clearing apartments on Second Avenue floor-by-floor. They began these evacuation efforts as the RV announced there would be 14 minutes until detonation. Officer James Wells suffered hearing loss from the blast. Wells said once he heard Luellen call over the radio for an immediate response, he knew by the tone of his voice it was serious. Officer Topping said as she was getting to the area of Second Avenue and Commerce Street she began to hear the message playing from the RV. "That's a sound I'll never forget," she said. Sgt. More than 20 fire departments are working to burn down a Beaver Dam, Wisconsin apartment building where a deadly explosion happened last week. City officials said dangerous chemicals inside of the structure made it too dangerous for residents to re-enter, and that burning the building to the ground is the safest way to prevent any injuries."We have carefully reviewed this, and we firmly believe this is the action that needs to be taken, unfortunately," said Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel at a Wednesday evening news conference. The five, neighboring buildings in the apartment complex were evacuated ahead of Thursday's controlled burn. Streets in the area were shut down at 9 a.m.Around 10 o'clock, firefighters lit both ends of the apartment building at 109 Knaup Dr. on fire and allowed it to burn towards the middle. Large shipping containers were placed around building 109 to help contain the heat and flames. Mannel said staffing of the fire trucks surrounding the building is minimal, and that firefighters only plan to step in and control the flames if they threatened any of the nearby structures. Police on Wednesday identified 28-year old Benjamin Morrow as the man killed in last Monday's blast. According to authorities, Morrow lived in one of the units.Beaver Dam Police Chief John Kreuziger said investigators continue to suspect that Morrow was building a bomb inside of the apartment. According to his obituary, Morrow worked in the quality department at Richelieu Foods in Beaver Dam for almost a year. His obituary describes him as "a hard worker" who "had a good rapport with all those around him."Police and the FBI continue to investigate why Morrow was in possession of the volatile chemicals that required them to eventually burn the building down.Kreuziger on Wednesday declined to comment on what the chemicals inside of the apartment were. City officials said the plan is for evacuated residents to be allowed back into their homes this evening. That's also when they plan to re-open nearby streets. The EPA has placed air monitoring devices in the area. Mannel said the EPA can also test the air in individual apartments within the evacuation zone at the request of residents. 2336
