(KGTV) - North San Diego County air travelers will soon have a new flight option from McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.California Pacific Airlines said Friday it would start taking passengers to Pacific Southwest destinations before the end of summer.Company president and CEO Paul Hook says the airline will succeed where others have failed because it will be able to offer something they could not: reliability.“What we’re looking at here an Embraer 145 regional jet,” said Hook as he looked at the 50-seat jet on the tarmac.Potential investors and ‘Airplane’ actor Robert Hays were on board a flight that left Friday for Sacramento. Hays represented a blood donor charity which partners with regional airlines to deliver rare blood types quickly.“All the doors are set up to open really easily - so, when I go up and announce I’ll be your captain today, I want to see how fast the plane empties,” Hays said.The airline will offer service to cities including San Jose, Phoenix and Las Vegas. 1023

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Two teenagers were stopped in their tracks when they looked into a tree and found a creature looking back at them along a Carlsbad street.Two Fridays ago, around 10:30 a.m., a freshman college student did a double take while walking along Babilonia Street in the La Costa area. He called a friend, who drove right over. They made a quick recording."Omigod, look at him," one of the teens is heard whispering in the video.Perched in a tree, about 25 feet up, was a mountain lion, growling.The mother of one of the teens tells ABC 10News soon after they stopped recording, they looked up, and it was gone.Lauren DuBois of Project Wildlife at the San Diego Humane Society, says it's hard to tell the big cat whether the mountain lion was a juvenile or an adult. She says it's not surprising it was in a tree."Not unusual at all. They will climb trees, and rest in trees quite often," said DuBois.Dubois says it was likely relaxing after a long night."They can have up to 100 square miles of a territory. Most of time they are hunting from dusk to dawn, so a lot of the time, that’s where (tree) they will be resting," said DuBois.The concern? Less than half a mile away, is La Costa Meadows Elementary School, which began in-person learning in October.Neighbors tell us there have been sightings of a mountain lion in nearby Box Canyon for years. One of those neighbors did file a report of the most recent sighting with state Fish and Wildlife officials.DuBois say this big cat wasn't being aggressive. What about the growl?"Hey, I’m up here. Don’t want you to be there. I'm going to take off now," said Dubois.She says if you ever do spy a mountain lion in a tree, slowly back away and maintain eye contact."It's probably going to just leave. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - Food insecurity is a problem in San Diego year-round, and that problem has become worse with the pandemic.Campo, in San Diego's East County, is an area that struggles with access to food year-round because of its far distance. Many people choose to live in the area because of the rural setting, but also because of the lower cost of living.“We’re really below the poverty level out here. We’re lower in income out here and so grocery stores aren’t readily available right around the corner,” said Julie Atherton, a site coordinator for a food distribution that happens twice a month.Atherton said the closest major store is at least a half hour drive, so the pop-up food banks with food supplied by Feeding San Diego are crucial throughout the year, but the need has grown during the pandemic.“We serve a lot of seniors, a lot of families that have been affected by the COVID,” said Atherton.She said the older people who live in Campo are the ones who need to be more careful during the pandemic, so many of them are trying to avoid stores. This caution, combined with an already existing difficulty with getting to the store, has created a heightened problem surrounding food insecurity. CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The body of an 11-month-old girl whose disappearance prompted an Amber Alert has been found dead in a diaper box, her mother is reportedly in custody. According to WBTV, the mother, 19-year-old Breanna Lewis, had initially told officials that she was walking to her mailbox carrying her daughter when a man violently stole the baby out of her arms. The baby, Harlee Lane Lewis, was found dead a few hours later.Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the body was found inside a diaper box in a field about 1,000 yards behind a home in Chesterfield, South Carolina.Brooks says the Amber Alert was canceled “because we don’t think there was a kidnapping.” The mother was then taken into custody and is being questioned, along with other family members, according to WCIV. The mother has been charged with filing a false police report, according to WSOC. Additional charges are pending following the autopsy report.The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, the FBI and SLED are investigating the case. 1106
