COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman arrested for dumping puppies in a trash can in Coachella was sentenced to a year in jail, according to KABC. Deborah Sue Culwell, 59, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment charges. Culwell was arrested after surveillance video captured a white jeep pull up behind a store on the 49000 block of Grapefruit Boulevard as a woman exited with a plastic bag. The video then shows the woman dumping the bag between trash cans.RELATED: Woman caught on video dumping bag of puppies in CoachellaInside the bag were seven puppies, all about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes.An employee at the store contact animal services after a passerby discovered the bag next to the .“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” Department of Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer said. “His actions were humane and heroic.”“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Mayer added. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”All but one of the puppies survived, according to KABC. 1168

CORONADO, Calif. -- A distracted school bus driver is being blamed for a chain-reaction crash that injured students on their way home.According to the CHP, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a bus carrying about 50 Coronado Middle School students rear-ended a truck that was stopped at a light, which hit another truck.Afterwards, Coronado's police chief and other officers handed out water because the bus was stuffy.There were no serious injuries, but six or seven students did complain of some pain.  It's unclear how many were taken to the hospital.The CHP says the preliminary cause is unsafe speed. The driver - in his sixties - claims he was distracted by something going on with the students.10News reached out to the school district to find out if the driver will face a suspension, but have yet to hear back. 826

CLEVELAND — Connie Culp, the first recipient of a partial face transplant in the U.S., has died at age 57, the Cleveland Clinic confirmed Thursday.Dr. Frank Papay, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute, who was also part of her surgical team, confirmed Culp's death in a statement.“Connie was an incredibly brave, vibrant woman and an inspiration to many. Her strength was evident in the fact that she had been the longest-living face transplant patient to date. CINCINNATI, Ohio — A settlement has been reached after a police officer used a Taser on an 11-year-old girl while working an off-duty detail at a Kroger in Southwest Ohio.The City of Cincinnati and Kroger have agreed to pay the family of Donesha Gowdy 0,000 to settle the claim of excessive force, according to a news release from family attorney Al Gerhardstein.Donesha had been shoplifting from the Kroger on Aug. 6 when Officer Kevin Brown, who was on security duty, ordered her to stop. She didn't. The officer fired his Taser as she walked away. One probe struck her at the base of her spine; the other hit between her shoulder blades.The incident prompted an apology from Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and a promise from Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman to review Cincinnati Police Department’s protocol on Tasers.Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot K. Isaac promised “a very thorough review” of Brown's actions, as well as the department’s use-of-force policies as they pertain to juvenile suspects. He said he's "extremely concerned when force is used by one of our officers on a child of this age."Smitherman, along with the girl's mother, also say the policy needs to change. The settlement did not include plans to change police department policy, and it must be approved by probate court.Donesha wrote this apology to Kroger: “I Donesha Gowdy is writing this letter to apologize to the Kroger company … to say I’m sorry for stealing from the store in will not do it again.”WCPO television station in Cincinnati has reached out to the City of Cincinnati and Kroger for comment. 1629
