HILLCREST, Calif. (KGTV) - As different industries and businesses are given the green light to begin the reopening phase after coronavirus restrictions, one industry says they’re being left in the dark. Brian Nguyen is the owner of two Hillcrest nail salons in San Diego and said they’re upset with the lack of information surrounding when nail salons will be able to reopen in California.“Very frustrated, seeing all these other businesses being able to open and nothing mentioned about us, not even a word,” he said.He said between the two salons they own in Hillcrest, they’ve had to pay around ,000 in rent during the three months of closure, while also losing at least an estimated six figures in revenue. In May, Governor Newsom had said Phase 3 of reopening would include hair salons, nail salons, barbershops, gyms, and movie theaters for counties that meet certain metrics. So far, all businesses on that list have been told either they can open or when they can open, except nail salons. When the closures started, Nguyen said they immediately began planning how to safely reopen. As a nail salon, they already took sanitizing steps and technicians wore masks and gloves, which will continue. In addition, they purchased panels for manicures that will go between the technician and the customer that will be cleaned between customers. All chairs will also be sanitized between people. They will take everyone’s temperatures before entering and are asking all customers to fill out a quick survey about their current health. They also spaced out all stations to add six feet between customers. At first, they will be appointment only. In addition, they added a new touch-free area to wash hands with a touch-free sink and soap dispenser.Hillcrest Nail Lounge employee Sarah Nguyen said it’s been hard to watch her place of work suffer and said she is ready to get back to work.“I want to go back to work, I want to get back to work as soon as possible and I want it now,” she said. “We want to pay taxes. We want the economy to go up. We don’t want it to stay like this.”She also said she hopes nail salons aren’t being punished because so many of them have Asian owners.“We all come to the United States, left our countries, come here to a better life but three months now, everything has changed,” she said.Brian and his wife Tracy own Hillcrest Nail Lounge and Tippy Toes Nails and Spa. 2407

Get ready for sticker shock at the gas station if you're one of the estimated 36 million Americans hitting the roads this Memorial Day weekend.Gone are the days of -a-gallon gasoline. A spike in crude oil prices has lifted the national average price of gas by 31 percent over the past year to an average of .97 a gallon, according to AAA.Prices at the pump haven't been this high heading into the biggest driving holiday of the year since 2014, when crude was sitting in triple-digit territory."WIthout a doubt people are noticing and they're feeling the pinch," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, a platform that helps drivers find real-time prices.AAA says that fifteen states, including New York, New Jersey and Illinois, are already facing average gas prices or higher. Gas in California and Hawaii, traditionally two of the priciest states, is north of .70 a gallon. Here's why gasoline prices are getting uncomfortably high:People are driving more: The United States is consuming more gasoline, thanks to the strong economy and upbeat consumer confidence. That trend could continue into this weekend. AAA estimates that 36.6 million Americans will travel by auto this weekend. That's almost 5% more than last year. Overall, AAA estimates that 41.5 million Americans will travel by car, planes, trains, buses and cruise ships over Memorial Day weekend, the highest since 2005."Demand is red-hot," said DeHaan.Crude awakening: But demand isn't strong enough to justify the spike in prices. That's where crude oil comes into play. Brent crude, the global benchmark that tends to influence US gas prices, recently topped a barrel. It's up about 50% over the past year. The oil rally has been driven by a range of factors, including robust demand around the world amid stronger economic growth. 1844

Hello! And welcome to Movie...Pass?MoviePass, the ticket subscription company, is buying Moviefone, the 29-year old movie directory service.A lot has changed since Moviefone first started. It's hard to imagine now, but people used to call a number for movie times. Moviefone became so popular that its famous "Welcome to Moviefone" greeting was parodied in a famous "Seinfeld" episode.Moviefone still has a website and app, but it retired the 777-FILM phone service in 2014. (Seinfeld's Kramer must be pleased. "Why don't you just tell me the name of the movie you've selected?")AOL, now part of Verizon, bought Moviefone in 1999 for 8 million. But MoviePass isn't spending nearly as much to get Moviefone. MoviePass majority owner Helios and Matheson Analytics will pay Verizon only about million for Moviefone -- million in cash and a mix of HMNY stock and warrants worth about million, according to a Securities and Exchange filing Thursday. So why does MoviePass want Moviefone? MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told CNNMoney it wanted access to Moviefone's film and TV show content."Our subscribers want to connect with Hollywood and hear more about what's going on in the film industry," Lowe said. "They'd like to have MoviePass recommend movies to them and Moviefone is iconic."Lowe, a co-founder of Netflix and former president of DVD rental kiosk service Redbox, added that he hopes the acquisition will be a "great funnel to attract new members" to MoviePass, which currently has more than 2 million subscribers.Ted Farnsworth, CEO of Helios and Matheson Analytics, added that the marriage of MoviePass and Moviefone will hopefully lead to more advertising revenue."MoviePass is growing at warp speed. Put it and Moviefone together and it gives us more advertising opportunities," Farnsworth said in an interview with CNNMoney. "This is a great strategic move for us."MoviePass arguably needs more ad sales to convince skeptical investors that its business model of buying tickets from theaters and then offering them to subscribers at a discount through monthly and annual subscription plans is viable for the long haul. MoviePass lets people see a movie a day for .95 a month -- it recently cut its price from .95.Shares of Helio and Matheson Analytics have plunged nearly 55% this year. Investors are worried that MoviePass won't be profitable anytime soon.Part of the problem? We live in an era of so-called peak TV. Netflix, other streaming services and big cable TV networks are churning out more and more quality shows that eat into the time people have to go to movies.Investors also worry that the big chains that MoviePass currently buys tickets from -- AMC, Regal and Cinemark -- may eventually look to cut out MoviePass and launch their own subscription services or other lower-priced deals.Regal, which is now owned by UK-based Cineworld, has experimented with charging more for tickets during peak movie times and less at times when attendance tends to be lighter. Think of it as Uber-style surge pricing, but for movies. And Cinemark unveiled Movie Club, a monthly plan that lets people buy a movie ticket a month for a discounted price of .99, last year. That deal obviously isn't as good as the one a day plan offered by MoviePass. But Cinemark will also allow Movie Club members to roll over unused tickets every month, bring friends at the lower price and offers bargains on concession stand items.Lowe isn't too concerned about competition though. He said he's convinced that MoviePass will continue to work closely with the big chains -- even if Wall Street is nervous."We have to prove we are a driving force in getting more people into theaters. We have to try and put our money where our mouth is," he said. 3759

Heading to the beach for Memorial Day weekend? Perhaps you'll be enjoying the sun and sand at one of the top 10 beaches in the USA.For 2018, Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui is No. 1, according to coastal sciences professor Dr. Beach.Dr. Beach, also known as Stephen P. Leatherman, has been releasing an annual list of the United States' top beach destinations since 1991. Leatherman is professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. He uses 50 criteria to assess the beaches -- from water and sand quality to amenities, pests and views and vistas.Kapalua, a gorgeous white-sand crescent, is billed as perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and fish food and snorkeling gear are available from a concession hut at the north end of the beach.Lined by palm trees, the beach is protected from waves by the "arms" of lava flows, creating an area teeming with colorful fish. The second-ranked beach is nearly 5,000 miles away on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach is located on Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible via private boat or ferry.Rounding out the top three, the mile-long beach at Grayton Beach State Park is located in a 2,000-acre park on Florida's Panhandle. There are 30 cabins available for rent in the park. 1315

Google said Monday it is shutting down the long ailing social network Google+ for consumer use amid new scrutiny of the company for reportedly failing to publicly disclose a security bug affecting users of the service. In a blog post, the company admitted Google+ had failed to achieve "broad consumer or developer adoption" since it launched as a would-be Facebook rival in 2011. However, the announcement came moments after The Wall Street Journal reported Google had opted not to disclose a bug affecting hundreds of thousands of Google+ users at least in part to avoid additional regulatory scrutiny.Google said in the blog post that it "discovered and immediately patched" a bug in March 2018. It said the bug could have affected up to 500,000 Google+ accounts, but the company found "no evidence" that any data was actually misused."Every year, we send millions of notifications to users about privacy and security bugs and issues," a spokesperson for Google said in a statement provided to CNN Business. "Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice. This is a developing story. More to come ... 1231
