Two United States service members were killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the US military announced.Their names have been withheld pending next of kin notifications. Additional details were not immediately available."This is tragic," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday in India. "My condolences go out to them. I'm praying for them, their families and for all the soldiers that were around them. I think this drives home the need for us to be successful with the missions that we have undertaken in Afghanistan as a reconciliation to reduce the level of violence, to reduce the level of risk to Afghans broadly, and the risk to American service members."Pompeo on Tuesday announced there had been "real progress" in Afghan peace talks with the Taliban, during an unannounced visit to the country. He told reporters that the US government was prepared to remove American troops from the country."We've made clear to the Taliban that we're prepared to remove our forces, I want to be clear, we've not yet agreed on a timeline to do so," he said Tuesday.Officials have previously told CNN that the Trump administration has instructed the US military to begin drawing up plans for a substantial drawdown of US personnel in Afghanistan. The two deaths bring the total number of US service members killed in Afghanistan in 2019 to nine. The US has had a military presence in Afghanistan since October 7, 2001, and since then, more than 2,000 US military personnel have been killed.Overall, the US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, where they primarily advise Afghan forces who are battling the Taliban. 1625

Who needs to keep a package of ready to eat macaroni and cheese from spoiling for three years at room temperature? If you're planning a trip to Mars, the answer could be yes. Researchers at Washington State University say they have found a way to triple the lifespan of ready to eat food. In the case of the macaroni and cheese, researchers believe they have found a way to keep macaroni from spoiling for three years. Previously the max lifespan the researchers could get for macaroni and cheese was 12 months using plastic. But using microwave-assisted thermal sterilization and adding a organic coating to metal oxide coating to the plastic can allow food to last three times longer. “We need a better barrier to keep oxygen away from the food and provide longer shelf-life similar to aluminum foil and plastic laminate pouches,” Shyam Sablani, a researcher with WSU, said in a statement. “We’ve always been thinking of developing a product that can go to Mars, but with technology that can also benefit consumers here on Earth.”While using metal oxide coating has been around for sometime, there was a flaw with the coating developing cracks to allow the food to be exposed to oxygen. “We are excited that an over-layer of organic coating on metal oxide helped protect against microscopic cracks,” Sablani said. “Multiple layers of metal oxide coating have also increased the barrier performance. Our research guided development of newer high barrier packaging.”Researchers like Sablani are hopeful the new technology could assist NASA in preserving food for a potential trip to Mars. With current technology, a trip to Mars could last at least two years. A one-way trip to Mars alone could last at least nine months. “NASA knows about our work, but we’re just now getting to the point where we can talk to them with a proven product,” Sablani said. “We hope to work out a way to test these products on the International Space Station in the future to show that the food is safe after long-term storage.”NASA has said its benchmark is for food to last five years. Sablani's team has food that is currently being aged to see if it is possible to store ready to eat meals for five years. Even if the technology might not be used for a trip to Mars, it could be of interest for the military. The packaging could be used for "meals ready to eat or MREs. 2366
VANCOUVER, Wash. – Police in Vancouver, Washington, said Wednesday a missing teenager was killed by a man after he learned she was transgender. The family of 17-year-old Nikki Kuhnhausen reported her missing in June, telling police they hadn't heard from her since June 5.This month, investigators say, a person walking in the heavily wooded area of Larch Mountain near Vancouver found a skull, and searches by the Clark County Sheriff's Office and Clark County Search and Rescue yielded more human remains. Forensic analysis confirmed the remains belonged to Kuhnhausen.Investigators said Kuhnhausen had been strangled.Wednesday, investigators announced David Bogdanov, 25, has been charged with second-degree murder.Bogdanov's attorney, Erin Bradley McAleer, said his client has a January 2nd court date. It is both a bail hearing and arraignment."My client intends to plead not guilty at that time, " McAleer told CNN.Social media and phone records helped lead them to Bogdanov, after investigators discovered the two were messaging each other on Snapchat and met on the day of her disappearance. They obtained a search warrant for Bogdanov's cell phone records in July, police Lt. Tom Ryan said in a news conference Wednesday.Bogdanov said he picked up Kuhnhausen that morning, according to Ryan."David and Nikki went to a residence in the county and at that time (Nikki) confirmed to him that she was biologically male. David gave a statement saying that made him really, really uncomfortable and disturbed him, and he asked Nikki to get out of his van and she walked away," Ryan said.Prosecutors are reviewing the case.Bogdanov had his first court appearance Wednesday. Up to 30 women who accused late financier Jeffery Epstein of sexual assault are expected to appear at a hearing Tuesday.U.S. District Judge Richard Berman ordered the unusual proceeding to discuss prosecutors' effort to dismiss the indictment against Epstein in the wake of his death. The New York City medical examiner determined Epstein died by suicide while in jail August 10. He was 66 years old.Epstein was arrested July 6 and charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking. Prosecutors accused him of operating a sex trafficking ring in which he paid underage girls to have sex with him and paid some of them to recruit other victims. He had pleaded not guilty and was set to face trial next year. The judge set Tuesday's hearing after prosecutors asked that he dismiss charges against Epstein since the defendant is dead. Berman said he would give prosecutors, Epstein's lawyers and alleged victims a chance to speak. 995
