SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are currently 34 active COVID-19 outbreaks at skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) across San Diego County.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said from March 25 to Aug. 18, there were hundreds of cases reported at SNFs.“We have 86 skilled nursing facilities throughout the County of San Diego. In total, there have been 788 residents, and 515 staff members with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and this includes 153 deaths,” she said Wednesday.It’s a trend across the country, and as the nation deals with the pandemic, SNFs are reporting financial hardships.A recent survey by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living of 463 nursing home providers across the nation revealed that many say they’re facing a financial crisis.More than 55% reported operating at a loss, while 72% said they won’t be able to sustain operations for another year at the current pace.The report shows that most of the financial troubles were linked to the increase in costs due to COVID-19, including additional staffing, more personal protective equipment (PPE), and testing.“It could have and should have been avoided by simply adequately staffing and having appropriate PPE,” said Mike Dark, an attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.For decades, the nonprofit based in San Francisco has fought for rights and better conditions for long-term care residents and their families in California.“At the beginning of this pandemic, nursing homes across the country had such terrible staffing and such thin PPE simply because money wasn’t being spent where it should have been,” said Dark. “It’s really up to the regulators to understand all the different sources of profit for nursing home owners and to make sure that when they hear that there’s just not enough money to pay for staffing or PPE, they really understand where those taxpayer health subsidy dollars are going.”He said the issues have been going on long before the pandemic. To avoid a disastrous situation in the future, Dark says changes need to be made at SNFs across the country immediately.“What nursing homes need to do, is staff up, train their staff, and make sure staff are adequately paid. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to give final approval to place a measure on the November ballot that would change the city's police oversight structure.The current version is the Community Review Board; the ballot measure would replace it with a Committee on Police Practices."It is so desperately what the community wants and needs, so that we can build trust between the police department and the community," said Andrea St. Julian, co-chair of San Diegans for Justice, the group that wrote the ballot measure.The new committee would be appointed by the City Council, as opposed to the old board which was appointed by the mayor. The new committee would also have an independent lawyer and oversight from city staff not associated with the mayor's office or San Diego Police Department.St. Julian said these changes will help avoid conflicts of interest that the old board dealt with, especially because the CRB's lawyer was the City Attorney, who also acted as the lawyer for the police department.The new committee would also have broader power for investigations. It would be required to investigate any police shooting, as well as any time someone died while in police custody or while interacting with police.The committee could also investigate any other complaints against an officer and review all disciplinary action taken within the department."When a full investigation can be done by community members or at the direction of community members, people feel much more comfortable with the results," said St. Julian.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and County District Attorney Summer Stephan have both said they support the measure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock ’n’ Roll marathon returns to San Diego in June, bringing hundreds of athletes and music to city streets. The 5K event is scheduled for Saturday June 1, while the half-marathon and marathon will be held Sunday, June 2. Entry fees are , 2, and 2 respectively. The marathon course starts on Sixth Avenue near Balboa Park. It extends as far east as Kensington, and north to Mission Bay Park, with a finish in Little Italy. Runners can enjoy the sounds of bands along the course, and support from San Diego cheerleading groups. For those who don’t want to run, the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Health and Fitness Expo will take place Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1 at the San Diego Convention Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died in Fallbrook late Friday night.Deputies responded to the 440 block of Ammunition Road around 10:40 p.m. to assist the North County Fire Department with an injured man.When deputies arrived, they found a man identified as Nicolas Ramirez suffering from an unknown traumatic injury.Ramirez was then taken to the hospital where he later died.
