Thousands of visitors are expected in the Hillcrest and Balboa Park neighborhoods for a weekend of celebration and political purpose. The theme for 2019 is Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation, marking the 1969 Stonewall Riots when members of the LGBTQ community fought back against “legal oppression.” “This Pride we will highlight the Stonewall generation, their activism, and all that our community has gained through their efforts, as we challenge ourselves to reflect on our own role in that legacy, and how, if we approach our own individual legacies with intention, we can build on their successes to leave a better world for those who come next,” said San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Z. A 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds in a shark attack Wednesday on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, according to officials and reports.The swimmer suffered bites to his leg and torso and was hospitalized, CNN affiliate WCVB reported. His condition was not immediately known.The incident occurred in Truro within the boundary of Cape Cod National Seashore, the National Park Service said.The man was standing about 30 yards offshore when he was bitten.WCVB reported there have been shark sightings in the area, with seals being attacked.Two children were attacked last month off Long Island, New York, and investigators were looking into whether sharks were responsible. 693

(KGTV) — Voter registration has reached an all-time high in California ahead of November's midterm elections, according to newly released state data.A record 19,696,371 Californians were registered to vote as of Oct. 22, an increase of 1,892,548 registered voters since 2014, Secretary of State Alex Padilla's office says.That means about 78.16 percent of Californians are eligible to vote, the state's highest level since the state's 1950 gubernatorial election.YOUR VOICE YOUR VOTE ELECTION COVERAGE"It is nearly unprecedented for California to set a voter registration record in a midterm election," Padilla said in a release. (WFSB) - Most people would call dodgeball a harmless playground activity, but a team of Canadian researchers argue the game is a tool of oppression that can unfairly target students perceived as "weaker individuals."The group presented their argument Monday at a conference organized by the Canadian Society for the Study of Education in Vancouver, according to CTV News. They claim dodgeball – which requires players to eliminate their opponents by hitting them with rubber balls – teaches students to dehumanize each other and creates unsafe conditions in schools.“Dodgeball is the only game where the human is the target. No other games focus on it," study co-presenter Joy Butler, a professor at the University of British Columbia, told CTV News."It's tantamount to legalized bullying," she added.Butler worked alongside David Burns, a professor at the Kwantlen Polytechnic, and Claire Robson, a professor at Simon Fraser University. Ridesharing measured about 6,055,963 colony-colony forming units (CFU) compared to an average toilet with 171.61 CFU.Rideshare vehicles were far ahead of rental cars and even taxis on the study's germ index, and worse than toothbrush holders, coffee reservoirs, and toilets. On average, we found more than 5 million [colony-forming units]/sq. in. on the tiny buttons. The seat belts, too, held high levels of bacteria: more than 1 million CFU/sq. in.," the study says. "Interestingly, the door handles were the cleanest surface, with 1,810 CFU/sq. in. However, one study showed that the average car door handle holds 28 microorganisms per square inch – meaning the average rideshare door handle is 64 times germier."The study compared three random ride-share cars, three taxis and three rental cars.While not all germs are harmful, higher levels of some bacteria pose a risk.
