SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Kensington's historic Ken Cinema, an institution in the San Diego neighborhood for nearly 75 years, is closing its doors for good this March. The theater will shut down after March 22, a spokesperson with owner Landmark Theaters told 10News.According to the spokesperson, "After long consideration and much effort, we regret that we are unable to continue operating the Ken Cinema ... The company recognizes what a cherished asset the Ken has been to the neighboring community. The changing theatrical landscape and challenges to independent exhibition are the major contributing factors."RELATED: Poway bowling alley to close in latest big change to busy corridorSince 1946, Ken Cinemas has operated in Kensington on Adams Avenue, bringing local theater-goers independent and foreign films, and restored classic movies. It was the first theater to specialize in the film genres in San Diego.According to Landmark Theaters, the 300-seat cinema is the last single-screen theater in San Diego. In 1975, Landmark Theaters became the theater's owner. The Ken had already faced closure under the Landmark brand in 2014, leading to outraged fans voicing their concerns on social media. The cinema was able to reach a new lease agreement with Landmark, according to San Diego Magazine.RELATED: Mostra Coffee goes from garage to world championsThe company said it will continue the theater's independent and foreign film programs at Hillcrest Cinemas, which it also owns. It's not clear what will become of the historic property after the cinema shuts down. When asked what will happen to the cinema's current staff, the company didn't immediately provide an answer. 1681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday. The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. He says they will start within their members first, then the community."We'll reach out to the community and hope that some of them will value this place that's been in the community for 90 years and let it still be a home for veterans to be around other veterans," he said.VFW 5985 has been closed most days except Tuesdays and Fridays to make meals for dozens of veterans, their families, and those who need it. The post was open on Veteran's Day. 1400

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up for a prayer vigil Wednesday night, organized by the Broadway Heights Community Council. The Prayer Vigil for Love, Peace and Justice was outdoors on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A dozen faith leaders participated, each taking a moment to speak to the crowd and then share prayer with the crowd. Organizers say they put this together in response to the racial injustice around the country, mentioning the death of George Floyd and the arrest of Amaurie Johnson at the trolley station in La Mesa. The vigil was peaceful and organizers say that was the goal. Families that attended the event and faith leaders say they are hopeful that coming together will lead to meaningful change and healing. 740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's one of San Diego's crown jewels. The Hotel Del Coronado has been a landmark of America's Finest City since 1888.While its walls are steeped in history, recently, rumors swirled that a face-changing paint job to the hotel's lobby was coming.Facebook users on the "Coronado Happenings" page voiced worries that the iconic hotel planned to paint its wood-finished lobby white.Do you have a fact or fiction question? Submit your question to 10News here. Those rumors, however, are just that, according to the hotel.Hotel Del Coronado's Public Relations Director Sara Baumann told 10News there were discussions of possible upgrades to retail shops on the hotel's lower level, but nothing regarding painting planned for the lobby. Nothing has been set in stone for any upgrades in any space, as well, Baumann added.Could that change even be made to a National Historic Landmark? According to the National Parks Service, "property owners are free to make whatever changes they wish if Federal funding, licensing, or permits are not involved." 1086

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's almost time for kids to head back to school, and that may have some parents considering their children's options. In California, parents have many options, including educating children at existing private schools, through a charter or independent study program, or by opening a private home-based school. But make no mistake; it’s a big undertaking. The State of California requires those choosing to homeschool their children to file a private school affidavit.RELATED: Back to school shopping comparison: Wide price range between Target, Staples, othersParents must provide all curricular, instructional and other materials. State rules also require parents to keep track of their children’s attendance.Another factor to consider is college. The state urges parents schooling at home to learn about student admission or eligibility at specific colleges and technical schools.RELATED: Tax-free weekend 2018: Participating states, dates and what you can buyFor parents considering homeschooling, it’s also important to know that the alternative diploma equivalencies for students who don’t attend public school are the GED or the California High School Proficiency Exam. 1217
