NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are dropping a controversial piece of coronavirus guidance and telling all those who have been in close contact with infected people to get tested.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) essentially returned to its previous guidance about such tests."Due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, this guidance further reinforces the need to test asymptomatic persons, including close contacts of a person with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection," the CDC wrote in a "clarification" posted Friday. With the change, the CDC got rid of language posted last month that said people who didn’t feel sick didn’t need to get tested.That August change set off a rash of criticism from health experts who couldn’t fathom why the nation’s top public health agency would say such a thing amid a pandemic that has been difficult to control.The New York Times reports that last month's change was not actually written by CDC scientists and was posted to the agency’s website despite their serious objections. It reportedly came from the Department of Health and Human Services.The CDC website now says testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection. New studies confirm that multiple types of steroids improve survival for severely ill COVID-19 patients, cementing the cheap drugs as a standard of care.An analysis of pooled results from seven studies found that steroids reduced the risk of death in the first month by about one-third compared to placebo treatment or usual care alone in these seriously ill patients who needed extra oxygen.The work was led by the World Health Organization and published Wednesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.Based on the results of the studies, the WHO has made two recommendations. The first, it says a strong corticosteroid therapy for 7 to 10 days should be used in patients with severe or critical COVID-19. The second, this therapy should not be used in patients with non-severe COVID-19, because it may increase the risk of death.“In contrast, in patients with non-severe COVID-19, based on data from 1,535 patients in one study, systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of 28-day mortality,” researchers wrote.Compared to other treatments for COVID-19, these types of steroids are generally low cost, easy to administer and readily available across the globe.“Dexamethasone and prednisolone are among the most commonly listed medicines in national essential medicines lists; listed by 95% of countries. NEW YORK CITY — The co-owner of a Staten Island bar that continues to flout local coronavirus restrictions was arrested again early Sunday morning after allegedly hitting a sheriff's deputy with his vehicle, officials said.After a night of surveillance at Mac's Public House, two uniformed deputy sheriffs approached Daniel Presti, 34, just after midnight to place him under arrest, but he ran from the officers, got into his vehicle and began to drive away, according to the sheriff's office.Presti allegedly drove into one of the uniformed deputies, officials said. The deputy was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and Presti reportedly continued to drive down South Railroad Avenue with the injured deputy still clinging to the hood of the car.,Presti drove about 100 yards before stopping his vehicle, officials said. He was arrested and taken to a police precinct, where he is expected to be charged.The deputy sheriff who was struck by the vehicle was taken to Staten Island University Hospital for treatment, officials said.The car crash was the latest incident surrounding the controversial Staten Island bar — which has garnered national attention and was even spoofed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend.Presti was also taken into custody by deputy sheriffs on Tuesday after an investigation revealed the bar was offering indoor dining and defying several other coronavirus restrictions despite rising infection rates in the area. Staten Island has the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in New York.Bars and restaurants in state-designated "orange" microcluster zones are only allowed to offer takeout and outdoor dining, with a four-person maximum per table.Despite Presti's initial arrest and the loss of the the bar's liquor license, Mac's Public House opened its doors to indoor diners again this weekend, according to the sheriff's office.On Saturday night, deputy sheriffs reported witnessing dozens of people entering and exiting a neighboring commercial space to access the back door of the bar.According to the sheriff's office, food and alcohol were being served to unmasked and standing patrons in exchange for "monetary donations."Following Presti's arrest Saturday night, Mac's Public House said on Facebook that the restaurant would remain open."We will not back down! NEW YORK — An influential scientific panel on Tuesday voted to recommend to the CDC that when a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, both front line health care workers and residents in long-term care facilities should be prioritized first. During this ACIP meeting, about 120 people will die," Dr. Beth Bell said during initial remarks at the beginning of the virtual meeting Tuesday.The ACIP met Tuesday afternoon in an open-to-the-public, virtual meeting to vote on the proposal that gives priority to health care workers and patients in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. The two groups together represent around 23 million Americans out of a population of about 330 million; about 21 million in health care professions and less than 3 million adults living in long-term care facilities.Current estimates project around 40 million doses combined available by the end of 2020. And each vaccine product requires two doses.The CDC said Tuesday they expect 5-to-10 million doses available each week after a vaccine is authorized by the FDA. Long-term care facilities are responsible for six percent of COVID-19 cases and 40 percent of COVID-19 deaths in this country, she said. Later this month, the Food and Drug Administration will consider approval of two vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna. The panel meeting Tuesday said they hope to learn more about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines as more information is released by the FDA.Dr. Dooling said one of the questions they hope to ask about the Phase 3 trial data of both Pfizer and Moderna is how effective one dose of the vaccine has shown to be. They will also be taking a deeper look at the age groups of those included in the trial, and the efficacy of the vaccines on older people. Some of the comments during the public comment section referenced the lack of transparency released at this time about the vaccines and the panel trying to make vaccination decisions without it.
