DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kyrgyz counterpart Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Thursday agreed to promote cooperation of the two countries in various fields.     During a meeting with Bakiyev here, Hu said "The consensus reached between us during my visit to Kyrgyzstan last year to fully deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas has been orderly put into practice, and bilateral ties have made new progress."     China attaches great importance to its ties with Kyrgyzstan and regards Kyrgyzstan as an important partner in Central Asia, he added.     Hu urged the two sides to well implement bilateral cooperative programs in the building of roads and railways, and to promote business at land ports to deepen bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The SCO, founded in 2001, groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.     After paying a state visit to Tajikistan and attending the SCO summit, Hu would fly to Turkmenistan on Thursday night. He has already visited the Republic of Korea, the first-leg of his three-nation tour in Asia.

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Monday hailed the country's remarkable science and technology achievements since the launch of its 1978 Reform and Opening-up Drive, but he also admitted that there is "still a large gap" with the world's most advanced.     Among developing countries, China had now taken the lead regarding the general level of science and technological development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     He attributed the achievements to the full support of the Party, the nation and the hard work by Chinese scientists and technicians.     Hu made the remarks at Monday's inaugural ceremony for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Science. At the meeting, the late leader proposed that science and technology were a productive force, intellectuals were part of the working class, and the key of the country's modernization drive lay with the modernization of science and technology.     He reiterated science and technology were the No.1 productive force; human resources were the No. 1 resource; and it was a must to persistently increase the capabilities in independent innovation; it was a must to adhere to the political advantage of socialism, which enabled the government to gather powers to do big things; it was a must that science and technology served economic and social development as well as the people; and it was a must to display the scientific spirit.

HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Higos, the 17th tropical storm of the year, landed in China's southernmost Hainan Province Friday evening, local observatory said.     Higos landed at 10:15 p.m. in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, 19.6 degrees north latitude and 111.0 degrees east longitude. The wind speed at the eye of the storm was 18 meters per second, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.     It was forecast to weaken and move northwest towards the coastal areas of western Guangdong Province. Delayed trucks are parked at the Xiuying port in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province Oct. 3, 2008, due to the suspension of ferry service.In total, 24,115 fishing boats in the province had returned to port and coastal fisheries staff had gone home. All recreational sporting activities on the air or sea were also suspended on Friday, said Lin Mingzhong, Hainan Provincial Office for Flood, Wind and Drought Control deputy director.     He predicted Higos would have minor impact on the island as the rainfall was expected to be around 100 mm. It was likely to affect some small reservoirs as their current water level was high.     Higos was formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, coming on the heels of tropical storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which combined had killed about 20 people in China. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you."     A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter.     She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou.     "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview.     But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital.     Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said.     He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas.     Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.
