Latinos make up a third of eligible voters going into the 2020 Presidential Election. A recent Pew Research study lists the Supreme Court as one of Latino voters’ top concerns.Christine Rodriguez, a Latina attorney set to be sworn into the Supreme Court Bar in January, says the concern comes from the lack representation. Rodriguez recalls dreaming of becoming an attorney as a 9-year-old girl but not having anyone to mentor her.“No one I knew was an attorney,” said Rodriguez.It wasn’t until her senior year of high school, during an educational trip to Washington, D.C., that she found her inspiration.“I was like, ‘Oh yeah! This is it! This is what I want to do,’” said Rodriguez of the moment she was able to observe Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the rest of the Supreme Court Justices as they heard a case.Rodriguez even kept the notes she took while observing. Near Justice Antonin Scalia’s name, she wrote a note describing him as talkative and funny. Next to Ginsburg’s name, Rodriguez wrote, “smart and serious.”Twenty years after this experience, Rodriguez is months away from getting sworn into the Supreme Court Bar, allowing her to argue cases before the Supreme Court. During that ceremony, she was set to meet Ginsburg.“I wanted to thank her for her tireless work as an attorney and as a woman and pioneer in this field,” said Rodriguez.As a Latina, Rodriguez says she has some concerns over some key decisions the Supreme Court will make in the coming term and who will be a part of the decision making process. One example she points to is health care.“Health care through the Affordable Care Act is an issue that will be up before the Supreme Court,” said Rodriguez.Opponents of Obamacare hope the court decides to suspend the program. President Trump has said he will replace Obamacare.While Rodriguez is concern with some specific issues the Supreme Court will hear, other voters say we need to start with a diverse Supreme Court. The Latino vote has never been as powerful as it is now. According to a Pew Research study, there are 32 million eligible Latino voters.Mari Carmen Puente Castallano is one of them.“I don’t care what side you vote, but vote. Make it known we are here,” Castallano said regarding voter turnout.Rodriguez says the Latino community has been ignored by politicians for too long, but now that the number of voters is significant enough, the community needs to double down and show up at the ballot box.“The more we vote the more politicians have to listen,” Rodriguez said. 2545

Las Vegas police say they have found the body of a young child inside of a duffel bag after a mother told them that her 3-year-old daughter disappeared during a walk to a local grocery store.The woman called police around 9 p.m. local time Thursday. She told police she was walking with her four young children to Albertson’s, across the street from her apartment complex.The child's grandmother also contacted Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas and told the TV station that her grandchild was missing.Police officers searched the woman’s apartment first, not finding anything, and then the neighborhood. They decided to search the apartment again because parts of the woman’s story did not add up.During the second search, the body of a small child was found in a bag in a closet. Police officers detected a strong odor and it appears the body may have been in the closet for a few days. The woman was placed in custody and the other three children are in protective custody.The missing girl's father was arrested earlier this week after police received a call about a domestic disturbance.   1115

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 90-year-old Florida man who dressed in full protective gear to say goodbye to his wife, has died of COVID-19.In a Facebook post, Sam Reck's son-in-law shared the news that Sam has died.JoAnn Reck, Sam's wife of 30 years, died a few weeks earlier after battling COVID-19. She was 86 years old and Sam was 90.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife JoAnn Reck during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes. JoAnn lived in a nursing home and suffered from dementia, and Sam lived in an apartment nearby.Family members said the couple would schedule socially-distant visits once Sam couldn't visit the home any more. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa's police chief said the incident where a woman was shot in the head with a bean bag round during last weekend's protest is under investigation.LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said during a press conference that the officer involved has been identified and that the incident was being investigated.Mayor Mark Arapostathis said another press conference would be held to follow up on the investigation. "The incident is under review and will be addressed at a future press conference. We can say that it was absolutely critical that there be accountability for this injury and there will be," Arapostathis told reporters.RELATED: VIDEO: La Mesa Police release body cam video of viral arrestWhen asked whether the officer who fired the bean bag round that struck 59-year-old Leslie Furcron in the head was on leave, Vasquez only said the officer was not on duty Wednesday night.Furcron has been hospitalized since she was struck in the head with a bean bag round on Saturday during the demonstration at La Mesa Police Department headquarters. She and hundreds of other people were protesting police violence and the death of George Floyd.Furcron's son, Ahmed, said after the press conference that the department's response was not enough. "We want to know what's going on. My mom is 59-years-old. She didn't break any laws. She wasn't being violent or nothing. We want answers. She was shot between the eyes. There's no way, it's not even possible he missed the shot," Ahmed told reporters.RELATED: La Mesa woman hospitalized following protests, family saysThe police department was immediately under scrutiny after how authorities addressed the largely peaceful protest.Vasquez said that once officers deemed the gathering an unlawful assembly, they began to use measures to disperse protesters from the area, including tear gas and bean bag rounds. He added that officers are trained to aim towards a person's torso when using bean bag rounds.Though when asked why no officers rushed to Furcron's aid, Vasquez said officers did not make it to the area in time."At the time of the incident, we were engaged in an unlawful assembly and it was a riotous situation. So when the information came out at that time ... to see exactly what happened and with our opportunity to get to her. Which was difficult at first, and by then she was already taken," Vasquez said.Vasquez added that anyone with video of Furcron's injury and other reported incidents of people being struck with bean bag rounds during the protest should send those videos to the department. 2583
