Barry Peterson and his wife, Jan, were looking forward to forever. The married journalists were living and working in Asia, until Jan's diagnosis with Alzheimer’s at age 55 cut their forever short. “The hardest thing was watching her disappear a little more,” Barry says. They discussed what Barry’s life might look like without her. “She was very adamant that if something happened to her, which I didn't think was going to happen, that I should go on and have the rest of my life,” he says. CBS Sunday Morning captured video of the couple when Jan moved into assisted living. “I do love him, and just couldn't do without him,” Jan said in the video. Barry was alone, and he had to make a difficult decision. “I really felt that for my survival, my sanity, my desire to have conversations with someone that really understood the process, that I needed to reach out and I did,” Barry says. That’s when Barry met Mary Nell Wolff. Friends encouraged Mary to go on Match.com. She says she later got a message from Barry, who shared his story about his wife's illness. “It just broke my heart,” Mary Nell recalls.Mary Nell had suffered her own tragedy, losing her husband in a bicycle accident. After writing and talking on the phone for a year, she and Barry met in person, and eventually moved in together. With Barry traveling the world for work, Mary Nell took on caregiving responsibilities for Jan. “I felt at peace the moment that Jan and Mary Nell bonded,” Barry says. They called themselves a family of three. “I didn't not love Jan, and I was not going to in any way abandon her, but I loved Mary Nell at the same time,” he explains. “And Mary now loved me, and Mary Nell loved Jan.”Barry shared his experience in his book called “Jan's Story.” He received some criticism, much like the husband of B. Smith--an iconic model and restaurateur who lives with Alzheimer’s—did. B. Smith’s husband, Dan, sent shock waves through social media when he revealed he has a live-in girlfriend while also caring for his wife. “If you're not in it, then you have no right to judge people who are in it,” Barry says. Amelia Schaffer with the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association says Barry and Dan’s stories are really about the importance of early detection and outlining your wishes while you can. “The biggest barrier to having conversations early is that people don't recognize they're dealing with Alzheimer’s,” Schaffer says.Jan passed away in 2013. Barry says if you can understand the love he shared with her and Mary Nell, “then you have understood the matrix of what love is like with Alzheimer’s for people who just want to survive.” 2649

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Bailey Anne Vincent dances with all of her senses but one. She says she’s profoundly deaf from all usable hearing. "I am a choreographer, a professional dancer, a homeschooling mother, a writer, an advocate, and a director of my own professional dance company which is a body-positive dance company outside of D.C.,” Vincent said. In life, she relies on reading lips and sign language, but when dancing, she’s able to feel the music and innately understand the rhythm. “So I can be a bit of a control freak because I like to hit play on the music myself, because when I hit play, it’s like I start my internal metronome, and I start the clock in my head,” Vincent said. She started losing her hearing as a child and realized why when she was diagnosed with a chronic illness. “I have cystic fibrosis transmembrane related disorder which is a variant of cystic fibrosis, and for me it impacts all of my major organs so my sinuses are impacted, my lungs, I’ve had a copious amounts of surgeries on my stomach, and I have a whole bunch of robot parts so I call myself a bionic ballerina,” Vincent said. From inhaling antibiotics to taking daily medications, Vincent faces many challenges with her health. So, when something like the coronavirus becomes a global concern, it means Vincent's life could be in danger. “I am considered high risk amid the coronavirus outbreak,” Vincent said. Vincent’s husband, John LaBarbera, says they always have to be cautious of germs and sickness around her, so at first, it didn’t seem like that big of deal. However, it was inevitable that the emotion of it all would eventually catch up. “Bailey often says to me ‘your cold could be my pneumonia.' All the sudden today as we were driving to the studio, I just started feeling this tightness in my chest – which understandably is a concern so I was like ‘oh no’—but I could immediately tell that it was just that I had been suppressing the stress about it, the worry about her and about the illnesses,” LaBarbera said. Vincent says cystic fibrosis patients are familiar with staying six feet apart from one another, but when the whole world needs to practice social distancing it can be a bit daunting. “Because of my health, I’m used to having to wipe things down, and be aware of germs, and avoid other people who are sick, but this is just so scary because we don’t want to bring it to anyone else who is immune-compromised or to my parents or the elderly and so I think everyone feels so much more involved in keeping one another safe,” Vincent said. It should be noted, we stayed multiple feet apart while recording this story, and sanitized all camera equipment for the safety of Vincent. And a studio that would normally be filled with dancers was reduced to Vincent and her family. Vincent says she’s not sure how she’ll handle this new reality. “I’m honestly really disheartened and depressed because for me, dance is my outlet. It’s the thing that makes me not worry about the pain of my physicality, and not think about my health so much. So not being able to have that outlet, of course, is difficult when you’re someone with chronic pain and issues to not be able to be out in the world and distract yourself from your current circumstance,” Vincent said. On top of that, Vincent is trying to keep her 3338

According to a Pew study, the number of online daters ages 55 to 64 years old has doubled from 2013 to 2015. "It's harder to meet people in your own age demographic," says matchmaker Michelle Frankel. However, Frankel says if you're looking for love, now is the time to begin your next chapter. "For those people who don't have a significant other, they start saying, ‘How can I make this different in 2019? What can I do to make changes?’ And the easiest and lowest hanging fruit is to jump online," Frankel says. The first Sunday in January has become the hottest day to hop online for dating because it’s the busiest. There are two types of online dating, according to Frankel. “The traditional and the modern,” she explains. “The modern is the apps on the phone: the Hinge, the Tinder, Bumble. The over 50 crowd, I would really steer away from that." As for traditional online dating, Frankel recommends sites like Match, eharmony and Our Time. When it comes to your dating profile, Frankel says to have three great photos of just you and eight to 10 sentences describing who you are and what you like to do. And whatever you do, she says don't say, “I can’t believe I'm doing this.” Remember, no matter how long it takes, Frankel says to trust there's someone out there for you. "It does truly work,” she says. “It really comes down to having the same values and wanting to spend your life the same way." 1431

AURORA, Colo. -- Just as hundreds of restaurants are being forced to close down indoor dining, yet again, In-N-Out Burger made its debut in Colorado on Friday.Hundreds waited in line for hours to get a burger from the California-based fast-food chain.“It’s just a journey today,” said Charly, who came to relieve her dad who waited for three hours, but then had to go to work without making it to the front of the line.“Three or four hours wasn’t unexpected,” said Bob Fischer. “So, it’s definitely worth the wait.”Whether it was worth the wait depends on who you asked. But is it worth it? “No,” said Charly. “I don’t even eat beef. I’m just here for (my sister) and my dad.”In-N-Out’s arrival in Colorado comes at the most ill-timed or opportune moment, depending on your perspective.“I ordered about five cheeseburgers and five animal fries,” said one In-N-Out fan who did not wish to be identified. “It’s all about the uniqueness of the secret menu,” Fischer said.“I grew up in California, so we were always eating it,” said Maddie Duncan.Just around the corner, at the mom-and-pop NGL Burgers, owner Jesus Pulido is preparing to close to indoor dining yet again.“Tomorrow it’s back to take-out only or I can put some tables outside,” Pulido said. After 16 years in business in Aurora, Pulido, who’s also from California, certainly has his fans, too.“The food speaks for itself,” said an NGL regular named Zeke.“I grew up in L.A. There’s char-broiled burger places everywhere,” said Juan Lopez. “And this is exactly the same way.”Lopez says Pulido’s prices are right on the money.“If you’re going to let me pick for lunch, I’m going to come here because this is a better deal,” Lopez said. The question is – what kind of dent will In-N-Out, coupled with another COVID-19 shutdown put in Pulido’s business. He, for one, believes he will survive.“In-N-Out, that’s going to hurt me a little bit, you know? But I have my own customers,” Pulido said. “They want to go over there, whatever.”“To me – it’s important to keep these guys going,” Lopez said. “They know me so when I come here, you get the feeling of family and community.”This article was written by Russell Haythorn for KMGH. 2202
