The race is a total of 70.3 miles of biking, swimming and running. For one local Camp Pendleton marine, the race meant so much more. Captain John Watkins participated in the Ironman in memory of his daughter, Amelia Mae Watkins, also known as Millie. Millie passed away when she was just 10-years-old from neuroblastoma last year. Since Millie's death, her family raises money to raise awareness about her specific type of cancer. The Watkins raised over ,000 dollars for this race. (KGTV) — An investigation is underway to find a mail thief who appears to be targeting military families living on Camp Pendleton.A few weeks ago, Jessica, a Marine wife who lives on the base, went to her mailbox and saw a card from a friend in Arkansas."Opened up my card, and after I opened it, I realized there was a slit down the side," said Jessica.After a closer look, Jessica realized someone had been in her mail."A clean cut down the side. Didn't get caught on anything. A machine didn't make this ... Just irritated. It's an invasion of privacy," said Jessica.Jessica says her card never did contain any cash or gift cards, but others on base haven't been as lucky."They're furious, and they want something done," said Jessica.Jessica says on various Facebook pages connected to the base, hundreds have posted photos of tampered mail received in the past two months. The envelopes are usually missing cash, gift cards or checks."Pretty disgusting. Pretty shameful ... It's no accident it's happening to us. Military families are an easy target. We're not with our families. Families make up for it by sending us a little extra, definitely for our kids," said Jessica.So what is the commonality when it comes to the mail? It's processed and delivered by the Postal Service. The closest post office is about a mile-and-a-half from the base.The Postal Inspection Service confirms they've begun an investigation, along with an internal probe. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Oceanside Police are searching for a suspect following an alleged attempted abduction in Oceanside Wednesday morning. According to police, a 5th grade female student at Laurel Elementary School was walking down San Diego Street near Lemon Street around 8:30 a.m. when she noticed a man standing near a dark SUV. As she walked closer, the young girl says the man opened the passenger side door and grabbed her by the arm. The girl reportedly pulled away, kicking the suspect before running to school. Police described the man as white, bald and heavy set in his 30s with a black beard. He was seen wearing a black jacket, light blue shirt and black pants. OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Oceanside City Council decided Wednesday night to postpone a vote regarding a controversial development plan in East Oceanside. The developer hoped to postpone the vote in order to make adjustments to the plan. Residents opposed to the plan hoped Council members cast a 'no' vote to put an end to the plan.The North River Farms Development sits on 177 acres in an area Southwest of Bonsall, known as South Morro Hills. "We're really excited to bring an 'Agrihood' to the City of Oceanside," Ninia Hammond, Project Manager of Integral Communities, said. Her company began crafting this plan five years ago. Their goal is to create a place that will feature a trifecta of community, housing, and farming on traditionally agricultural land.The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce expressed their support of the project in February. They argued that it would bring in millions of dollars, and help the city meets its 2021 Regional Housing Needs Assessment goal.10News met with Jane Marshall, a resident vehemently opposed to the plan."We would rather have a better quality of life, where a developer is willing to work with us in all our infill projects," Marshall said. "We have plenty of room to build instead of taking prime farmland from Oceanside."But the developer said this is the only location for a plan of this kind. "The maker spaces, the creative hub, the exposure to the view of the river," Hammond said. "All of that makes the nature of it, really specific to the location."Marshall disagreed. She said the development would decimate small farms, increase traffic and pollution, and create flooding and fire issues. She said the plan does not include a clear emergency evacuation plan, putting residents at risk. Because of these very issues, Oceanside's Planning Commission turned down the plan for the second time two weeks ago. But Hammond said they are optimistic the city council will postpone the vote and reconsider the issue another time, after they make revisions. "Our goal is to make this the safest and best-planned community we possibly can. Through enhancement like offers, irrigation, setbacks, high fuel mod zones," Hammond said. 2187

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities need more personal protective equipment (PPE) than they did at the start of the pandemic.“If a home doesn't have at least a week's worth, that's a problem. It's regarded as a critical shortage and the reason why is because if you have an outbreak, you can start chewing through your existing supplies like that,” said Teresa Murray, a consumer watchdog at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG).The group looked at data from facilities sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. They found one in five were dangerously low on one or more items, like gloves and hand sanitizer. Almost half didn't have a one-week supply of at least one type of PPE.“And they say that it's not unusual at all for nurses to use masks for like five days,” said Murray. “If they even have gowns, they're reusing them.”U.S. PIRG says these facilities couldn't compete with demand for supply.The Medical Supply Transparency and Delivery Act, which is sitting in Congress, would help stabilize prices. And the Defense Production Act could be used to increase U.S. production of PPE.“And not only does it affect the residents that are in that home. It affects the workers who, guess what, they go home, they go home to their families,” said Rowan. “They go home, to their grocery stores and to their churches. And their kids go to school. And so, this is, I mean, it's no surprise that this is why we're seeing some of these community outbreaks because of one case that starts in a nursing home.”When the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid said the data was accurate, U.S. PIRG says they were referred to FEMA for a solution plan.
