SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, well kind of. Cities across the U.S. still may be trying to deck the halls, but a COVID-19 Christmas just looks and feels different.For people of faith, a season full of worship and togetherness will be missed."They do feel isolated," said GlenRoy Watson, a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Watson’s congregation is made up of about 100 families."Normally at Christmas, we'd eat dinner and hang out and have a Christmas presentation," he said.This year, religious celebrations need to be held at home, but he had an idea."I'm just hoping that everyone will learn a little bit more about each one another and just continue to feel united," Watson said.He asked all families in his congregation to make a home video about their traditions or fond holiday memories to share with each other."It will be kind of like a mini movie," he said."For our Christmas tradition we read the story of Jesus Christ," congregation member Denise Cordero said as she sat with her young daughter by their Christmas tree and spoke to her iPhone camera.For church piano player VerLynn Brink, playing Christmas hymns for everyone at her church is what she will miss most."This is one of my favorite memories of Christmas," she said as she recorded a video on her phone while playing her piano. "I had one of my favorite memories of Christmas in France.”Now, she plays for an audience of one."It’ been a challenge, but I’ve tried to make a point every day to call somebody just so I feel connected," Brink said.She said she is looking forward to the virtual viewing party in the days ahead.At the McGuire home, they are trying to keep the magic of Christmas alive while still focusing on their faith."With this year being a little bit different, we have started some new traditions," Drew McGuire said.The family said they miss meeting with their church family more than ever."This year, I feel like a lot of people have struggled with things and there hasn’t been a lot to feel hopeful about these days," McGuire said.They hope the family video they’re making will help brighten others' days."Merry Christmas everyone," the family said in unison on their video recording.As the videos came pouring in to GlenRoy Watson, it's his family’s turn to record their own video."We love celebrating and learning more about the nativity," Watson said as he smiled at his family.So, even if most families' Christmas celebrations will take place on a living room couch instead of a church pew, the message is the same."We love our savior, Jesus Christ and we still care and support each other even if we can't all be together," Watson said. 2707

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A City Council committee Wednesday unanimously directed the City Attorney's office to draft an emergency declaration over a lack of shelter space, which has exacerbated a deadly outbreak of hepatitis A among San Diego's homeless population.A declaration regarding shelters is already in place. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man riding a scooter in the Gaslamp community of San Diego suffered a "brain bleed" when he rode through a red light and broadsided a Toyota Prius that had the green light, entering into the intersection, a police officer said today.The crash occurred a little before 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of 4th Avenue, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former member of the U.S. national wrestling team, who was severely injured during a training camp exercise held at Camp Pendleton, has filed a lawsuit alleging the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling encouraged him and other civilians to take part in a military-style exercise involving weapons that the participants weren't adequately trained to use.Richard Perry and his wife Gina Cimmino filed the lawsuit Tuesday in San Diego federal court against the United States and Armament Systems and Procedures Inc., a company that manufactured and sold a padded baton used in the exercise that resulted in Perry's injury on Aug. 27, 2018.Perry and another civilian attendee of the training camp were provided batons and helmets with facemasks and given "instruction to strike, thrust and jab at the opponent's head and face to score a `kill shot,"' according to the complaint.As Perry's training partner jabbed with the baton, the weapon passed through a gap in Perry's facemask and shattered his eye socket and skull, pushing shattered bone fragments into his brain, the suit alleges.The injury nearly killed him and left him with multiple traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures and "permanent, disfiguring, disabling injuries" which "will require extensive future medical care, vocational rehabilitation, and life care for the rest of his life," according to his court papers.Perry and the other wrestlers were invited to Camp Pendleton as part of a joint event held by USA Wrestling and the Marine Corps that was partly intended as a Marine Corps recruitment initiative, according to the suit.Perry's attorneys allege National Team members were required to attend the camp, as non-attendance resulted in "adverse consequences, including losing a monetary stipend they otherwise earn as National Team members."The lawsuit alleges the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling "placed Richard Perry and other civilian Camp attendees into a `fight club'-style full- speed, full-contact military weapons training exercise," and that Marine Corps and USA Wrestling members "recklessly encouraged head shots and baton jabs by the inexperienced participants" during the exercise in which Perry was injured.The helmets provided to Perry and other wrestlers were "grossly unsuitable for the baton striking drills and posed a clear risk of serious injury," according to the suit. The plaintiff also alleges the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling failed to inspect or maintain the equipment used during the exercise and the batons were "dangerously unprotected," with the padding only held in place by duct tape.Robert J. Francavilla, the lead trial attorney on the case, said his client "suffered a traumatic injury that has affected his life, his livelihood and the lives of those who love him.
