(KGTV) - A catamaran stuck in a Point Loma cave for nearly a week was pulverized by surf, according to the salvage crew.New photos and videos from Tow Boat US San Diego show unrecognizable pieces of fiberglass, and one hunk with the engine intact."There's no section left of the boat that looks like a boat at this point," Captain Tony Olson, with Tow Boat US San Diego, said.Last Friday morning two men on a fishing trip were rescued from a catamaran stuck inside a cave near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. The men fell asleep while the boat was set to autopilot.The surf was so rough since the crash, salvage crews couldn't re-enter the cave until Thursday afternoon. "It just completely pounds that thing, bouncing it off the walls like a pinball... trying to get behind it, next to it, in front of it, is a bad place to be," Olson said.The divers took pictures and were prepared to pump out fuel when they realized there was no fuel to be found, "there are no fuel tanks left to be found, they're gone. So in the process of the boat coming apart they have floated away, it did not smell like fuel inside the cave at all," he said.Three pieces of the boat came back with the crew, two hunks of fiberglass, "part of a hatch possibly," Olson said, and a steering wheel.Friday morning the crew will devise a plan to pick up the rest. "Float larger sections out possibly drag them off and hoist them up to a boat we'll have waiting out there," Olson said.The divers possibly swimming out the smaller debris. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Within a series of unfinished walls, Tom Stefanko oversees hundreds of construction workers every day, all of them wearing what looks like an old-school pager. Yet, the technology involved is new.“I think it gives workers a little bit of comfort,” Stefanko said.The devices are proximity tracers, designed to make sure workers on construction sites remain socially-distant during these pandemic times.“If I was in contact another person, it would start beeping red,” Stefanko said. “And if I stayed there longer, it progressively beeps louder.”While they alert workers that they’re too close to one another, the proximity tracers also record that data, in case a worker later ends up testing positive for COVID-19.“It provides the ability to have a real-time alerting system and then also be able to go back historically and see who's been in contact with whom to do the contact tracing,” said Robert Costantini, CEO of Triax Technologies.The company began to develop the proximity tracers when the coronavirus outbreak began.“The stakes are really high, if you get it wrong,” Costantini said. “I mean, workers could be infected. You can shut your site down. The cost can be enormous.”The contact tracers, though, cost about a dollar a day, per worker. More than 15,000 of them are now in use on more than 70 construction sites around the country, including the 1 million square foot building that Tom Stefanko and his team are working on in Philadelphia.“We have a thousand tags here on site,” Stefanko said. “Most workers just keep it on their hardhat. (KGTV) — An unusual fossil deposit was discovered during construction at the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, yielding remains that may be up to 28 million years old.The state Department of Transportation says skeletal remains of extinct mammals — including camels, oreodonts, rodents, and possibly a large carnivore — were discovered at the site of the SR-11 and Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project.The fossils are estimated to be somewhere between 16 to 28 million years old, or Earth's Tertiary Period, and could provide more insight into our area's history.Paleo Monitors from the San Diego Natural History Museum found the remains in what appears to be a new geologic formation that has yet to be mapped in the region. The area also contains plant fossils and volcanic bombs (or pieces of rock ejected by a volcano), the DOT says.The Nat will curate and catalog the fossils into its paleontology program.The construction project, which will create a new port of entry into the country, will continue as planned, the state said. 1080

(CNS) - With the coronavirus pandemic still raging in Southern California, the 2021 Rose Parade was officially canceled Wednesday, but the fate of the Rose Bowl Game remains in limbo."The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as well as that of our volunteer members, professional staff and partners, is our number one priority," Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association said in a statement. "Obviously this is not what any of us wanted, and we held off on announcing until we were absolutely sure that safety restrictions would prevent us from continuing with planning for 132nd Rose Parade."It's only the fourth time since 1891 that the parade has been canceled, with the three previous cancellations occurring during the wartime years of 1942, 1943 and 1945.Although the New Year's Day tradition was technically still months away, planning for the elaborate floral floats that highlight the event -- and arranging for the often international travel of participating marching bands and equestrian groups -- is a nearly yearlong process, necessitating an early decision on whether to hold the event.
