SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More victims have come forward, saying their financial advisor stole thousands of dollars in an alleged Ponzi scheme."He preyed on the elderly folks," said San Diego resident, Brian Taylor. Brian and his wife Sharon have been married for more than 50 years. Brian, a Navy veteran, said this is not how they planned to spend their retirement. "We enjoyed our lives. We don't enjoy our lives anymore," Brian said. Christopher Dougherty was their neighbor. Sharon said they knew their family well and often met for parties or gatherings over the years. They stated investing with Dougherty in the early 2000s. A few years ago, they moved money into his company C & N Wealth Management. The Taylors said Dougherty told them they were investing in tax-free municipal bonds. They learned later that was not true. "It was actually invested in heavy equipment," Brian said. "I couldn't believe it." They said it was all done without their knowledge. The couple learned about this just this past October. "He said, don't worry, you're getting your money back and we didn't know that was the day after he filed bankruptcy," Sharon said. The Taylors are the third couple Team 10 has interviewed regarding this alleged Ponzi scheme. Sharon and David Vega said Dougherty stole about ,000 from them. That money was meant to help their grandchildren when they go to college. "We have not received any funds back," Sharon Vega told Team 10.Diane and Jerry, who declined to use their last name, said Dougherty took more than million dollars from them, meant for their retirement. "We can't even afford a burial plot at this point," Jerry said. Late Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff's Department confirmed a criminal investigation into Christopher Dougherty with at least 30 potential victims. Bankruptcy attorney Larissa Lazarus is with the Law Offices of Mark Miller. Their firm represents 11 people in the Dougherty bankruptcy case. "They are all just good, really kind people who unfortunately trusted someone who was a licensed financial advisor and wasn't actually looking out for their best interest." She said she could not say whether or not it was elder financial abuse, but Lazarus said Dougherty was "doing things he was not supposed to be doing as a licensed financial advisor." In 2011, Dougherty was charged with a felony for taking thousands of dollars from a youth sports league. He ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to three years summary probation. Records from the Department of Insurance showed that Dougherty "took somewhere between ,000 and ,000 from the League's bank account" when he sered as volunteer treasurer. In a letter dated April 19, 2012, Dougherty wrote to the Department: ".. due to extreme financial hardship and personal issues, I suffered a lapse in judgment that was fortunately resolved within a short period of time due to my efforts." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday afternoon, two brothers were sentenced in connection to the deadly freeway shooting of a Navy sailor who stopped to be a good Samaritan.Edson Acuna and Brandon Acuna learned their sentences following the 2018 shooting death of Navy sailor Curtis Adams. Edson Acuna was given a term of life without the possibility of parole plus 25 years to life plus 27 years and four months. He was ordered to pay ,000 in restitution and pay for associated fines. “He's going to be in prison for the rest of his life until he takes his last breath and I think that will give him time to pay these from prison wages,” the judge told the courtroom.Edson Acuna was convicted by jury of first degree murder while Brandon Acuna pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. On Monday, Brandon Acuna was sentenced to 13 years in prison.Prosecutors argued that they burglarized a car outside of a Mount Hope home which led to a shootout with the homeowner. They tried to get away but a blown-out tire caused them to stall on the freeway. Adams stopped to help but Edson Acuna shot him after thinking that he was the homeowner from the shootout earlier in the night.Harvey Liberato and Susana Galvan were also in the brothers’ car and have entered plea agreements.The judge concluded the hearing by telling the courtroom that he hopes both men reflect in the years to come on the magnitude of the loss that their actions caused. 1441

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Protesters are demanding a change to how sex education is taught to students in California. They say a law passed a few years ago and written by local Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber is sexualizing young minds. The group of protesters is with the Alliance to Protect Children. They tell 10News they are for sex ed in school, but the law is teaching students more than what parents are comfortable with. “It feels like its a disrespect to all mothers and children everywhere,” said mother of two Domonique Hinton. Dozens of protesters stood outside Dr. Shirley Weber’s office downtown Friday morning, speaking against Assembly Bill 329 that was written and passed in 2015. The bill makes it mandatory for students 7th through 12th grade to be taught sex education, but it also gives schools the option to offer the age-appropriate curriculum to lower grades. AB 329 states, “‘Comprehensive sexual health education means education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.”Protesters say graphic details of sexuality should not be taught in schools. “That is not the same as sex ed like we probably had in high school or middle school. That's something different,” says organizer America Figueroa. “Just that word, sexuality, it includes a lot of things in it like the teaching of other ideologies as well as sexual behaviors.”The group says a new bill will be introduced next year that will allow parents to review the curriculum online, so there is complete transparency. 10News reached out to Dr. Weber’s team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On this holiday, some extra thanks for a Clairemont family, months after an expectant mother was placed on a ventilator from COVID-19."This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful to be here with my family," said Ashley Duque.That family includes Ashley, her husband Diego, their daughter Anna, 3, and the newest addition, three-month-old Lucas."He came out our miracle baby," said Ashley.The miracle emerged from a pandemic. In March, 17 weeks into her pregnancy, Ashley was hospitalized with coronavirus, before being placed on a ventilator for five days."It was very, very scary," said Ashley.She spoke to ABC 10News from her hospital bed while recovering. Ashley was discharged after more than two weeks, but she would be back for nine different surgeries from complications from the COVID-19 treatment.Most of the surgeries involved removing scar tissue in her throat caused by her time on the ventilator.Then in August, Ashley was back in the hospital, as she went into labor three weeks early."I was nervous and scared," said Ashley.Despite her COVID battle and her other health issues, Lucas Duque was born August 25, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. He was healthy."We’re just very blessed that nothing happened to him," said Ashley.On this Thanksgiving holiday, there is a mix of emotions. Ashley is still having issues with the scar tissue, but Ashley and Diego are feeling an overwhelming feeling of gratitude."In a flip of coin, anything can happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One week later, San Diego Police Homicide Detectives made an arrest in a homicide case in a Mountain View neighborhood. On Sunday, May 6, 2018 police units responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting at 500 S. 40th St. When the initial units arrived on-the-scene, they found a 33-year-old black male and a 37-year-old black male, both lying on the ground.According to police, both males suffered from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Both victims were later transported to the hospital but, were later pronounced deceased.The victims have been identified as Tony Jackson, 33, and Robert Brown, 37.Family friends said they were fun, caring men who had families and young children of their own. After a preliminary investigation by the San Diego Police Homicide Detectives, they determined that a black male, wearing dark clothing walked up to the victims, who were standing in front of the Rec Center at 500 S. 40th St., and began shooting.There has been a high police presence since the shooting, according to neighbors.San Diego Police Homicide Detectives identified the suspect as Shannon Bryant, 29, of San Diego. Bryant faces charges in connection to the murder of both Jackson and Brown.
