A consumer advocacy group is warning parents of what it calls "dangerously high" levels of a chemical called boron in popular slime toys marketed to children -- although an expert disputed the findings and said the warning is overblown.The warning was contained in the annual report by the?US Public Interest Research Group Education Fund. "These high levels of boron can cause nausea, vomiting and long term reproductive health issues. Parents should closely monitor their kids when playing with this toy and call poison control if any is eaten."Garber added, "We should protect children by ensuring every package has appropriate labels moving forward and determine health-based standards to ensure children don't end up in the emergency room from their holiday gift."The United States does not have established standards on limits for boron in products. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says exposure to large amounts of boron -- about 30 grams of boric acid -- "over short periods of time can affect the stomach, intestines, liver, kidney, and brain and can eventually lead to death." Fatal doses for children are estimated to be 5 to 6 grams, according to the?Environmental Protection Agency.PIRG noted the European Union has a limit of 300 ppm for boron and that there should be a "full-fledged investigation to determine if limits should be established" in the US. "Policymakers should continue to evaluate new threats, such as boron, and ensure the Consumer Product Safety Commission has the funding and authority to protect the public," the report said.However, Rick Sachleben, a member of the American Chemical Society who has experience with boron, said it's important to distinguish the fact that "all forms of boron are not equally toxic." He said sodium borate, the known component used in slime, has "very low toxicity.""You'd almost have to do something beyond reason to make it toxic," he said, adding that a child would need to eat "multiple containers" before it reached toxic levels."The health risks are relatively low and can be controlled by telling your kid: 'If you eat the slime, I'm not going to buy you any more," Sachleben said.Sachleben wasn't the only one to take issue with the PIRG report.Wonder Workshop CEO Vikas Gupta told CNN that information about his company's product in the report was categorically false. The PIRG report, citing an investigation by the Mozilla Foundation, said Wonder Workshop's Dash robot "shares your information with third parties.""That is absolutely incorrect," Gupta said. "We don't collect any personal identifiable information from children, and we do not share any information from the apps or the software or robots to any third-party ever. None of that happens."Amazon, which had its Amazon Fire HD Kids Edition cited for its possible sharing of data, said the product is in full compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. "We do not share children's data with third parties," Amazon said in a written statement.The report also said another popular toy -- the Hatchimals Fabula Forest; Hatching Egg with Interactive Tigrette -- had "no choking hazard label" in its listing on Walmart.com, although the photograph of the product has a choking warning on the front of the box.Garber said that wasn't good enough, that the "law requires online sites to provide warning labels directly on the site, not just on pictures or on the packaging, so parents are warned prior to purchase."According to PIRG, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled more than 40 children's products in the last year, totaling more than 2.7 million units.Balloons cause more choking deaths among children than any other toy, according to the PIRG report. A Chandler mother is accused of punching and biting her preschool-aged daughter. Chandler police report that on July 31 they arrested 31-year-old Enricka Rena Johnson. Police say Johnson abused her 5-year-old daughter at their home near Arizona Avenue and Pecos Road. Investigators allege that Johnson became angry because the child would not brush her hair. She reportedly punched the girl in the eye and bit her on the arm. A medical exam noted several other injuries including a brain bleed and a broken lower leg with scarring. Johnson allegedly told police that she bit the child on the arm, hand, and shoulder. She also said, "I hit her hard, I hit her a lot."She reportedly told police that the girl broke her leg about two to four months ago, but instead of getting medical attention she taped the leg for support. The leg swelled causing the scarring. Police say they also found meth in Johnson's possession. She has been charged with child abuse.I 1005

A group of siblings are back together after being separated in foster care.A Texas couple with three biological children officially adopted the five siblings over a Zoom call in May, doubling the size of their family.Andi Bonura says she and her husband, Thomas, had been wanting to adopt after years of pregnancy issues. Their three existing children, Joey, Sadie and Daphne, were born premature. They also lost one child during a pregnancy and another died in the NICU.So, in 2017, the couple got licensed to become foster parents. Their first foster child was Bryson, who is now 2 years old. The couple then began fostering two of Bryson’s older siblings, David and Gabrielle.Eventually, the two final siblings, Thomas and Carter, started visiting the Bonura home and asked if they could also come live with them, according to Bonura.Bonura says that one day, she got a call saying their foster children’s biological parents were terminating their rights to the kids and they were given the option to adopt them. A family who triggered a device at a gender reveal party that allegedly started a wildfire over the weekend in California could be held financially liable for the fire fight.The El Dorado Fire was started Saturday morning in San Bernardino County in Southern California, it has burned more than 10,000 acres and is 16 percent contained as of Tuesday morning.CAL FIRE says the fire was started when a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device was launched at a gender reveal party in a park. The press release from CAL FIRE reads, “Those responsible for starting fires due to negligence or illegal activity can be held financially and criminally responsible.”A spokesman for California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as CAL FIRE, told The Daily Mail the family whose device started the El Dorado Fire could be liable for the entire bill for the destruction.The couple was reportedly still at the park where the fire started when firefighters arrived.“We know how it started because they were still there,” Bennet Milloy with CAL FIRE told The Daily Mail. “That, and the fact that there were surveillance cameras in the park.”Milloy says they could face a variety of criminal charges, which could increase if homes and buildings are destroyed. A California utility company said its crews found a damaged transmission tower and holes in a power pole at separate locations near the site where the Camp Fire started.More than a month after the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history broke out, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. released a more detailed account of outages it experienced that day.In a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, PG&E said one of its employees called 911 on November 8 -- the day the deadly wildfire began -- after spotting flames in the vicinity of a high-voltage tower near the town of Pulga in Butte County.That fire was reported almost 15 minutes after the utility experienced a transmission line outage at the same location, the company said. It was also around the same time the Camp Fire broke out.The electric utility had disclosed in a regulatory filing last month that it "experienced an outage" on a transmission line in Butte County about 15 minutes before the wildfire began but had not released additional details.PG&E said in its Tuesday letter that inspectors later discovered that a hook connecting part of the transmission line and the transmission tower was broken. They also found a flash mark on the tower.The company also detailed a second outage at another location. That incident was reported a few miles away from the first outage and about 15 minutes after the wildfire started.When crews went to check the outage a day later, the letter states, they "observed that the pole and other equipment was on the ground with bullets and bullet holes at the break point of the pole and on the equipment."Meredith E. Allen, PG&E's senior director of regulatory relations, explained that details about the incidents are preliminary and they remain under investigation."The cause of these incidents has not been determined and may not be fully understood until additional information becomes available, including information that can only be obtained through examination and testing of the equipment retained by CAL FIRE," Allen wrote to regulators.The Camp Fire burned through more than 153,000 acres in Butte County, killing at least 85 people and destroying thousands of structures.
