Buried at the core of "Mulan" is the concept of deception. Deceiving others for the perceived greater good, deceiving an overzealous enemy and even deceiving one's self at a steep price.All of them are at play in the long-awaited, oft-disappointing live-action remake.There are some things going for the oft-dull film.Director Niki Caro, who proved adept at inspirational tales with "Whale Rider," "North Country" and "McFarland, USA," has a pulse on the heart of the feminist fable, about a woman who masquerades as a man to protect her family and homeland. The visuals are dynamic, and the casting is note-perfect.Martial arts legends Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li play significant roles, and the cinematography and choreography often recalls exaggerated, Ang Lee-style theatrics.The core of the film -- that Mulan could convincingly trick her military comrades into thinking she's a man -- falls flat. While Liu Yifei thrives with the athletic ability and emotion needed in the lead role, the makeup department did her no favors. She looks more like a supermodel than a rough-hewn male soldier. Scenes in which men assume her gender are unintentionally funny.The new "Mulan" takes a more somber and serious tone than the original, swapping out the Eddie Murphy-voiced comic relief dragon Mushu for a CGI Phoenix, and subduing most musical moments in favor of tense, overly dry brooding.It's been a long and rough wait for superfans. Originally slated for a July 24 release, the movie was bumped to August 21, before landing September 4 on Disney+ as a early access add-on. It will be free on the app December 4, and unless you're a superfan, you're best off waiting until then.At least fans will be able to be mildly disappointed in the comfort of their own homes, and be able to hit pause if they get a little drowsy.There is impressive artistry at work. The film is every bit as gorgeous and sweeping as Disney's best live-action remakes: "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King."Add this one to the pile of disappointing live-action remakes of Disney classics, along with "Aladdin," "Dumbo," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp" and "Beauty and the Beast."The movie's legacy may well be what it does for boosting Disney's app and changing the way studios sell movies to the public. CHENGDU, China (AP) — The U.S. closed its consulate in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu on Monday, a victim of the rising tensions between the global powers. China ordered the mission closed in retaliation for a U.S. order to shut down the Chinese Consulate in Houston. (KGTV) - On a given evening, the streets of Carlsbad Village are filled with people walking, biking, and driving across the train tracks that bisect the city.The number of trains passing through has also been steadily increasing.“There are projections that say in the next 10 years train traffic is going to double through this region,” said Jason Haber, who works for the City of Carlsbad.Carlsbad Village is one of the last remaining stretches of train tracks along the San Diego Coast that has not been double-tracked to accommodate the growth in train volume. But there are plans to change that.The option being pushed by the city is to trench the tracks through the downtown area. That would also address the other pressing issue on the tracks: safety.In the last 5 years, the North County Transit District says 11 people have died from being struck by a train in the city.Last September, Jason Holsinger was killed where the tracks cross Grand Avenue when he rode his bike passed a lowered crossing arm.Near Tamarack Avenue, Josh Foster was killed last February while walking along the tracks. The Medical Examiner determined he had marijuana in his system but ruled it an accident.One of the most high profile deaths occurred in 2014 when 22-year-old Patrick Terrin was struck by a train while crossing at Grand Avenue after a night of drinking.The family sued the City of Carlsbad and BNSF railways claiming there were inadequate safety measures at the crossing for pedestrians. However, they lost the case when a judge determined the city and BNSF were not liable.If a plan to trench the tracks is given the green light, the vehicle and pedestrian crossings would go over the tracks.Two alternatives are currently being looked at, a shorter and longer version.The North County Transit District oversees the tracks in the area and would end up making the end decision. It’s unclear where the money would come from at this point. Depending on the alternative chosen, the project could cost between 300-400 million dollars. Construction could take several years. 2093

Both pollsters are ranked as some of the most respected in the country. Both defend the polling process but acknowledge mistakes were made by some in 2016. "The problem that we had in 2016 was not that polling was any more inaccurate than it had been in the past. It was just that the inaccuracies happened to be in one particular direction," Murray said. What pollsters now know is then-candidate Donald Trump persuaded white voters to break with long-held, predictable voting habits and vote for him. Polling samples that once represented the population at-large, no longer did.
