INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Police have arrested an Indianapolis man on a charge of murder in connection with the death of his friend on the Near Eastside earlier this month.Dewayne Sims, 32, was taken into custody Thursday night on a warrant for charges of murder and being a felon carrying a handgun in connection with the death of 36-year-old Earl Whitney.Whitney was found shot and killed inside a home in the 500 block of North Tacoma Avenue just after 6:30 p.m. on March 8.According to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday, a witness told police that Whitney had brought home his longtime friend, Sims. Both appeared to be possibly intoxicated, according to the witness.At one point in the evening, Whitney reportedly attempted to get Sims to leave. Sims, the witness said, had dozed off. When Whitney tried to rouse him, Sims reportedly said, “Who is you?”Whitney reportedly responded, “It’s me, cuz” – at which point Sims allegedly shot him. According to the witness, Sims shot Whitney once, paused, then shot him two more times. Sims then allegedly fled the residence.An autopsy of Whitney determined he died of a gunshot wound to the torso.According to the affidavit, Sims was on GPS monitoring through Marion County Community Corrections at the time the shooting took place. The device “reported insufficient,” though, meaning that it “did not have a clear view of satellites to report a valid location.”As of Friday evening, Sims was being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. INDIANAPOLIS — Multiple people were treated for injuries after being stabbed near public library in downtown Indianapolis.Police were called to the scene on East St. Clair Street around 4:30 p.m. local time Saturday.According to Indianapolis Fire Department PIO Rita Reith, the attack started in the American Legion Mall and spilled over across the street into the entrance way of the public library. Four people were taken to the hospital to be treated for stab wounds - including the suspect. Reith says two of the victims are in critical conditions. The other two suffered serious injuries. None of them are believed to be life-threatening injuries. Witnesses say the person responsible for the stabbing rode into the park on his bike and was playing loud noises on a megaphone. When people asked him to turn it off and stop he pulled out a knife and started stabbing. Reith said the suspected will remain in police custody while he is treated at the hospital. No identities have been released. The incident remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. 1128

INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman filed a million civil suit against Purdue University basketball standout Isaac Haas on Tuesday claiming she contracted chlamydia and herpes from him after he lied about having been given a clean bill of health.The suit, filed in Tippecanoe County Circuit Court on behalf of the woman by the law firm of Hume Smith Geddes Green & Simmons, LLP, claims Haas “explicitly assured [Plaintiff] he had been tested for sexually transmitted diseases… and was currently without a sexually transmitted disease or condition.”The suit also claims that the woman received text messages from another former romantic partner of Haas, who claimed that Haas was aware of his diagnosis and that he had “infected a number of other individuals” prior to the woman who filed the suit.In addition to Haas, the suit names Purdue University and the alleged former romantic partner of Haas as defendants. The woman’s attorneys claim in the suit that, after the former romantic partner contacted the plaintiff, she texted her that she had learned of the lawsuit “via one of [Haas’] coaches” and tried to recant her story. The suit alleges that is evidence of a coordinated effort between Haas, the second woman and Purdue coaches to “cover up Haas’ knowledge and wrongful conduct.”Filed alongside the lawsuit were dozens of pages of alleged texts between Haas, the plaintiff and the other woman named in the suit.Asked for comment Wednesday, Purdue said it was aware of the lawsuit, but that the school had no comment.The lawsuit asks for the case to be heard in a jury trial, and for damages to be paid to the plaintiff in the amount of million.A call to the law firm representing the plaintiff was not immediately returned. 1739

INDIANAPOLIS -- The two suspects accused of shooting into an Indianapolis house last month and killing a 1-year-old girl confessed to the crime, according to preliminary court documents released Thursday.In the preliminary probable cause document, both Darrin Banks, 27, and Brian Palmer, 29, admitted to firing several rounds into a house in the 3500 block of Wittfield Avenue on March 29.Shortly before 2 a.m. on the 29th, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the house to find one adult and one child shot.Malaysia Robson, age 1, was killed in the shooting. Robson's 19-year-old aunt, Anna Fox, was also hit. Police say eight to 10 people were inside the home at the time, the majority of which were teenagers.Investigators found about 19 spent .223 casings on the street in front of the house.According to the document, witnesses said the shooting was related to a family dispute that started on social media, and escalated to a fight at an apartment complex before it culminated with the incident on Wittfield Avenue.A person close to both families told police they were told that Banks and Palmer were the ones involved in the shooting, according to the probable cause. On Tuesday, IMPD surveillance units followed Banks and Palmer as they drove around Indy's east side in Palmer's vehicle. When they failed to stop at a stop sign, IMPD initiated a traffic stop, where several officers noticed a "AR-15 type rifle" in the front seat in plain view, according to the document.Two AR-15-style rifles were found in Palmer's vehicle through a search warrant. When police interviewed Banks and Palmer separately, both said they were upset about the previous fight, which resulted in an injury to Banks' pregnant sister.
