(KGTV) - With fires devastating the entire town of Paradise and threatening more communities in Southern California, many are asking how to help the fire victims.VENTURA COUNTY: HILL AND WOOLSEY FIRESThe Ventura County Community Foundation has established the Hill Fire/Woolsey Fire Sudden and Urgent Needs Effort Fund. This will support nonprofit groups that are serving those affected by the wildfires.The Humane Society of Ventura County needs horse water troughs and horse electrolytes. Supplies should be taken to the shelter at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai. The shelter is also welcoming cash donations on its website.The United Way of Greater Los Angeles started a disaster relief fund for fire victims.The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control has opened multiple shelter sites to take in animals displaced by the fires. Cash donations to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation's Noah's Legacy Fund will support the department's disaster relief efforts.The Red Cross Los Angeles Region would like cash donations on its website or over the phone at 1-800-RED-CROSS. (KGTV) — Two people killed in a Christmas Eve. crash on State Route 78 in Ramona have been identified by San Diego's medical examiner.Christian Diaz, a minor, and Gonzalo Rodriguez, 44, died Monday in collided head-on collision on SR-78 near W. Haverford Road just after 11 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol.The county medical examiner said Rodriguez was driving westbound on SR-78 when he lost control of the Toyota Camry he was driving and crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding with the truck. Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene.RELATED: CHP: Child killed in head-on collision on SR-78 in RamonaRodriguez was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.Two other occupants of the Camry — a woman and another young boy — and the 77-year-old driver of the pickup truck were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries of unknown severity, according to CHP. Their conditions were not immediately known Tuesday.Investigators said both boys in the back of the Camry were wearing seat belts but not shoulder straps, which may have contributed to Diaz's death. 1095

(KGTV) -- Testimony will continue Tuesday in the preliminary exam for the suspected smuggler charged with murder after leading the border patrol on a wild, high speed chase that ended with the deaths of three of his passengers. It happened on westbound Interstate 8 near Boulevard on the evening of November 29th, 2018. Luis Virgen, 21, is a U.S. citizen who had been living in Tijuana at the time of the crash. He's charged with second degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter. Virgen is accused of smashing through a gate that leads into the U.S. from Mexico with 10 undocumented immigrants in his truck, including 9 in the bed of the truck under a tarp. Everyone but the driver was thrown from the truck when it crashed after hitting a spike strip deployed by the border patrol. Gregg Curtis testified that after the truck blew past him, he started shooting video with his cellphone in case something happened. Curtis can be heard talking under the cellphone video, which was played in court Monday. "I wouldn't be surprised if he totally crashes his brains out," said Curtis. He also testified about how fast the defendant was going."I was alarmed at a vehicle passing me at such a large rate of speed that it shook my truck," said Rieu. The border patrol received some criticism following the incident, some questioning why they didn't call off the chase given the wet roads and dangerous conditions at the time. Several agents testified that they had no idea that the truck's bed was hiding several undocumented immigrants. Another agent described how he tried to revive the victims. "Another individual, I cradled his head, he was moaning and groaning, and I told him he was going to be fine that it was just a scratch and to stay awake," said Agent Jahir Waterman. President Trump, at least for now, won't be able to do that in person.Trump had been out holding big rallies despite the coronavirus pandemic. His latest was in Minnesota on Wednesday in front of thousands, a day before he announced he tested positive for COVID-19."Rolling into the last month the president was planning to be on the campaign trail, in front of large crowds, where he thrives, the venue where he performs the best, and this is certainly an obstacle to that style of campaigning," said Thad Kousser, a political analyst at UC San Diego.Kousser said depending on what happens, an already political virus could make for different conclusions from each side."It'll confirm the worries that Joe Biden supporters had that the country and the nation and its president weren't taking the pandemic seriously enough," Kousser said. "If President Trump, as we all hope has a quick recovery, I think that will confirm the belief that the Trump base has that this is something that we can overcome."Kousser says he expects Joe Biden to continue to campaign on the road, but even more carefully.He says if either candidate were to become incapacitated it would make for an even more chaotic election because ballots will have already started going out.Kousser says each party has policies in place to select a replacement candidate should the need arise.
