SANTA BARBARA (KGTV) - Mandatory storm evacuation orders were lifted Tuesday morning for areas burned in Santa Barbara County's fires.Residents of some vulnerable communities were ordered to leave Monday night by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.By Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service determined the critical levels of rain did not arrive, lowering the risk of debris flow.The SBCSO said several weather systems are due in the area this week but none appear to be a mudslide hazard.Evacuation and debris flow maps will be updated as needed, the SBCSO said. 593

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A victim was rescued following a crash in Santee Wednesday afternoon. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened just after 4:30 at Mission Gorge Road and Cottonwood Avenue. Deputies responded to calls of a car hitting a motorcyclist. The victim was said to be conscious and breathing when they were taken to the hospital. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)- California State University San Marcos is preparing students and staff for possible power outages in light of the San Diego Gas and Electric warnings due to fire.At least three CSU schools have been shut down as a result of high winds and power outages. Staff members in San Marcos say they are keeping a close eye on those other universities.Classes proceeded as usual for CSUSM students on Thursday morning. Students say they have been keeping up the outages at other schools via social media. “For a second, I panicked; I really didn’t know it was San Francisco,” says freshman Nancy Salazar Soto. “I was like, oh, it might be me. It might be here in San Marcos.”She believes it would be hard losing power at school, but things would be tougher for the students who live on campus, like freshman Hannah Whitener. “It’s kind of a little bit sketch, you don’t really know everyone around you yet,” says Whitener. “I mean, my freezer, I’m kind of concerned about that.”CSU San Marcos sent out a memo to students late Wednesday afternoon warning them of the possibility of an outage and how to be prepared. “Make sure your car is gassed up in case you do need to relocate. Make sure you’ve got a flashlight handy," says CSUSM Vice President for Community Advancement Cathy Baur. “You’re students; you’re working on their essays and those projects. Make sure you’re saving it on your computer.” Baur says fire prevention is vital. The university knows firsthand after fires in 2014 caused emergency evacuations. “We had to close the campus just days before commencement because the fires were surrounding us and had to do an evacuation of campus,” says Baur. “It’s something that we as campus community are familiar with, we’ve lived through, and so we know how important it is to be prepared and to take any precautions that we can.”The university advises all students to check their emails and social media pages routinely. SANTA ANA (CNS) - A Colorado man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of killing an 11-year-old girl in Newport Beach in 1973, with authorities saying DNA technology helped them track down the suspect.James Alan Neal, 72, was arrested around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in connection with the death of Linda Ann O'Keefe, who lived in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach police Chief Jon Lewis said.The girl disappeared while walking home from summer school on July 6, 1973, and her strangled body was recovered the following morning in a ditch in the Back Bay area. Police said the girl was last seen standing near a man in a blue or turquoise van.Lewis credited ``the latest in DNA technology'' for helping crack the case that has stymied investigators for more than four decades.``We have never forgotten Linda or the tragic events of July 1973,'' Lewis said at a news conference announcing the arrest. He said the girl's death changed the community, making parents think twice about letting their children outside alone.Neal has been charged with murder and District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the suspect could potentially face a death sentence, although there is some question about whether capital punishment could be applied in the case given the date of the killing and the laws that were on the books at the time.Newport Beach police last July mounted a Twitter campaign releasing information about the killing to try to spur new leads.The tweets detailing the last hours of Linda's life included photographs from the crime scene and a newly created ``snapshot'' of the suspect that was put together by scientists at Parabon NanoLabs.
