WXYZ went to Jillian Rippolone’s home as she met with diabetics. They spoke about their struggles getting the insulin they need. It's a struggle Rippolone first experienced when, as a child, her parents lost their health insurance. “We were turned away because we didn’t have the money at the time to afford our insulin, which is this little bottle right here," she said. "This was 0 in the '90s. I needed three of them.”Rippolone says she feared for her life as her parents worked to get the money needed. Now, she says the situation is worse for many patients because the cost of insulin has increased in the United States. “For my 30 day supply, it is ,020,” Rippolone said. Michele Busticker, a woman meeting with other diabetics at Rippolone’s home, said she thought she was covered because she had health insurance. Then she dropped a vile on the floor. Insurance wouldn't cover a replacement.“I had to actually admit myself to the emergency room to get insulin to survive,” Busticker said. Mike Cowan says he turned to Rippolone for help when an Uber passenger stole his medicine as he drove.“Insurance isn’t going to make up for that, so I had to seek it out on the black market,” Cowan said. The black market he turned to is a vast network of people who offer insulin online. Rippolone is a leader in it. “Because when there is a diabetic in need you get it. CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A new report shows elder adult abuse increased significantly in the past 15 years.Centers for Disease Control and Precention (CDC) released the report showing a 75 percent increase in non-fatal assaults against men 60 and older, and a 35 percent increase against women 60 and older between 2002 and 2016.Dr. Jo Stecher, assistant director of the undergraduate nursing program at from Florida Gulf Coast University, says families should look for sure signs that can point to whether loved ones are getting abused.“They could pull back, they could guard themselves physically when certain people walk in the room,” Stecher said. “Fingerprints on the older adults upper arms where somebody has held onto them.”Stecher also points out that seniors with cognitive impairment could see situations differently and skew their reality.“What might be perceived as caring for them physically, might be abuse in their minds,” she said.She added that neglect is the most common form of abuse among persons 60 years and older.Dana Overton fears his mother is not getting the proper care at the hospital she’s currently staying. Overton claims hospital staff neglected his mother leading to bed sores and weakness in her legs.“They haven’t moved her. Attorney General announced on Monday.The Attorney General's Office said that investigators found over-the-counter drugs that were months beyond their expiration dates at Family Dollar, Dollar General and Dollar Tree locations as well as a number of motor oils that are not suitable for vehicles for engines made after 1988 at Dollar General. Investigators even found at multiple Dollar General locations a type of motor oil, DG SAE-30, which is not suitable for engines built after 1930. “It’s a tough pill for New Yorkers to swallow that the over-the-counter drugs they were buying may have been expired,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “New York consumers have a right to expect that products on store shelves are safe, fresh and suitable for their advertised use.
