SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday, doctors revealed President Donald Trump is taking a steroid, called Dexamethasone, as the latest medication for his coronavirus treatment."We just don't know what's going to happen next, things are very unpredictable," Dr. Christian Ramers, Chief of Population Health at Family Health Centers, said.Ramers has seen thousands of COVID-19 patients and says the disease has two phases, virus production and inflammatory. He said the shift generally happens seven to ten days in."Once things kind of shift, the damage actually comes more from the immune system's response than the virus itself," Ramers said, which is why a steroid like Dexamethasone is prescribed."Where it showed a decrease in mortality was in people who already required oxygen or if they were even sicker than that and were on ventilation," said Ramers, citing a study.Sunday, doctors stated the president received oxygen Friday before being taken to Walter Reed Medical Center, but said his oxygen levels only dipped to 94% and 93%. Normal levels are 95% and above.Ramers said studies show if you give the steroid too early or to someone who has a mild case, it could cause harm. "If you dial down the immune system too early or in a case that is really mild, you might have the opposite effect you're looking for," Ramers said.There's also a list of side effects."If you use them for a chronic basis or for more than a couple of days there is a long list of things it can cause. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The federal watchdog agency that aims to protect consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices is suing a San Diego-based company.On Tuesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) sued Encore Capital Group and its subsidiaries, claiming they violated the terms of a 2015 legal agreement.The CFPB claims, “Since September 2015, Encore and its subsidiaries violated the consent order by suing consumers without possessing required documentation, using law firms and an internal legal department to engage in collection efforts without providing required disclosures, and failing to provide consumers with required loan documentation after consumers requested it.”The lawsuit says after the effective date of the consent order, “Encore filed more than 100 lawsuits to collect consumer debts after the applicable statutes of limitations had expired."The lawsuit also claims Encore failed to disclose that consumers might incur international-transaction fees.In response to the lawsuit, the company's Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Administrative Officer Greg Call said Encore is built on a foundation of treating their consumers fairly and respectfully."We are disappointed that the CFPB has chosen to file this lawsuit on outdated issues, but we will continue to engage with the CFPB and work to ensure that we maintain policies and practices that fully comply with all applicable legal requirements. We believe that there will be no material operational impact as a result of the suit," said Call.
