SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Independent System Operator again Sunday reminded consumers throughout the state conserve energy, warning of more possible rotating outages.SDG&E said early in the day Sunday that customers should be prepared for possible outages to be called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.The news comes after a flex alert was issued statewide from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Monday, September 7.“Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Understandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time,” SDG&E wrote.Just before 6:30 p.m., CAISO issued a Stage 2 emergency and warned that consumers should conserve power until 9 p.m. to avoid rolling outages. Stage 2 is the step before rolling outages are ordered.The energy provider said turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of the dishwasher, clothes washers and dryers, and switching off unused lighting can all help conserve energy.SDG&E also said the Valley Fire, which has currently burned 1,500 acres near Alpine, has impacted electrical equipment and caused power outages.SDG&E said it’s working with Cal Fire in an effort to restore power quickly. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students said they've seen a steady decline at San Diego State University tailgates over the past three years.At their Homecoming tailgate Saturday some students were nervous to celebrate after learning a Freshman was gravely injured after a night of drinking."We definitely want to respect the family and respect the kid, and everyone who has been impacted by this because obviously this is something super severe," SDSU Senior Emma Marchant said.The parking lot was dotted with tailgaters, consisting mostly of alumni, a vast difference compared to the throngs of partiers in September 2018's home opener."Freshman year this whole area would just be covered with people and now it's kinda just us," Marchant said."Mainly undergraduates haven't been here," UCSD Alumna Teigan MacDonald said. Her sister is involved in Greek life at SDSU.A moratorium was announced October of 2018, requiring any group of 25 or more students to register and agree to a list of rules.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday."I think a lot of people are shocked, I understand why the university is doing it because we have people's kids' health at stake," MacDonald said.The University working to balance social life with safety."I think education and awareness is a huge step. i don't think punishing people and just suspending will do it because they've suspended again and again and this situation keeps happening again and again," MacDonald said."I hope there are measures taken that are intended to protect students but still allow them to be out here you know which is kind of a hard line to walk," Marchant said. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunset Hills Elementary school in Rancho Pe?asquitos has been honored for having the top-ranked School Safety Patrol in the city.The program is a partnership between San Diego Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, and the San Diego Police Department. Students participate by helping serve as crossing guards before and after school. Officer David Valdez, who oversees the team at Sunset Hills and four other schools, says the students learn leadership, community service, and volunteerism. "I have a lot of fun with them," Valdez told 10News. "It's great seeing them develop over the course of the school year."About 90 schools participate in the progam, encompassing 2,000 student volunteers. Each student is eligible to apply for the top honor of being designated as the "Colonel". This year, Sunset Hills student Maddie Smith won. "It's a great feeling," she said. "WHen you help a kid during something, even if it's just a small act, it makes you feel really good inside."Smith has ambitious goals. "I want to be the President when I grow up and I feel like this is a great way to lead me up to that. I will learn how to be a great leader, teamwork, a good citizen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The former home of San Diego Padres icon Tony Gwynn has finally found a buyer."Mr. Padre's" Poway home, that had since been foreclosed, was sold on Dec. 13 for ,429,500, according to Realtor.com. The two-acre residence was placed on the auction block in June starting at .2 million.
