CAMPO, Calif. (CNS) - A man suspected of setting fire to a historic commercial structure in downtown La Mesa during a police brutality protest that devolved into rioting last spring was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of arson and felony vandalism.Daniel Louis Sandoval, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning near his Campo home in connection with the fiery destruction of the Randall Lamb and Associates Building on Palm Avenue, according to the La Mesa Police Department.The structure, which had been designated as historically significant by the La Mesa Historical Society, was one of several buildings, including two banks, burned to the ground during the unrest.Two other men have been arrested in connection with the fires and the looting of stores during the chaotic demonstration.The May 30 protest was sparked by the Memorial Day in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the arrest of another Black man, Amaurie Johnson, in La Mesa a few days later.Johnson's rough arrest by a white La Mesa police officer was captured on video and proliferated over social media, prompting extensive backlash and a federal lawsuit filed by Johnson against the city.The demonstration began with protesters marching onto Interstate 8 in the afternoon, stopping traffic, before moving on to La Mesa police headquarters.Though the protest began peacefully, confrontations began breaking out at nightfall, with some demonstrators throwing things and officers firing beanbag rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd.Sandoval was booked into San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held on 0,000 bail pending his initial court appearance. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The owner of Lhooq Books is hoping the community can help him out, after being served with a 60-day notice to vacate.Sean Christopher has owned and run Lhooq Books on Carlsbad Village Drive for a decade. His book store specializes in rare books. It also features a public library outside, where people can either buy books for a donation or borrow them. It also hosts small public art events.But all of it is at risk.Christopher says he contacted his leasing company, Pacific Coast Commercial, in September to ask about the state of his rental agreement. Instead of getting answers, he says they served him with a notice to vacate."It was a complete and utter shock," says Christopher. "There was not even a hint that anything was wrong."In addition to being forced to leave his store, Christopher says he's also been told to leave his home, which he rents from the same company. The store and home are both on the same plot of land.Christopher says part of the shock came because of all the work he's done on the property. He estimates that he's spent thousands of dollars to clean up the home and renovate the store."I've basically replaced, repaired or deep cleaned absolutely every inch of the property," he says.He also says he had an agreement with the owner to do more work over the next few months to add a new entrance to the book store and a new storage shed in the home's yard.Now, he's confused why the owner would make that agreement and then force him out.Christopher says there's no way he can uproot his life, family and business in under two months."To find a suitable retail store, and a home, and then pay security deposits and first and last month's rent on both, while continuing to pay rent here, it's literally impossible," says Christopher.When he reached out for a follow-up with the rental company, Christopher says they told him their decision was "just business."They also told him to stop calling, or he'd be given a 3-day eviction notice.Now he wants to fight back. Christopher says he understand's the owner's rights to end his lease, but he hired a lawyer to try and get an extension."I'm not being unreasonable," he says. "I'm just trying to get a compromise, a resolution so that I can relocate without maxing out my credit cards or going bankrupt and possibly homeless."To help pay legal fees, Christopher has set up aGoFundMe account. One business owner in Carlsbad said she had to fork up more than ,500 to provide outdoor dining."They said your option is to pay this or you don't get to go outside," said Annie Rammel, owner of Oak + Elixir in the Carlsbad Village.The City of Carlsbad charges 1 for businesses to move onto sidewalks, but it wasn't that simple for Rammel."We were told that the fee would be 1. That's doable for us; we were willing to spend the money to build a beautiful patio where people felt safe."Rammel said she needed to expand into public street parking spaces to make outdoor dining work because there wasn't enough space on the sidewalk. She saw other cities across the county moving quickly to offer low cost or no cost permits for businesses to do the same. She was hoping Carlsbad would follow suit.The Carlsbad City Council voted to approve moving into public spaces on July 28, and Rammel got a permit days later. That came after four weeks of being shut down and working with the city to find a solution."We didn’t want to just put tables on the concrete that are in parking spots next to cars driving by," she said. "We wanted to create a safe space for customers to feel like they could come in relax."Then, the unexpected happened."We got a phone call from the city saying that we actually needed to pay ,500," she said.The city is charging ,200 per parking space plus extra fees. Rammel requested to utilize four spaces."The fee for a curb café is 1 but also includes ,200 per parking space into a fund that is used to create new parking to compensate for the loss of the parking that is converted into a dining area," said David Graham, the Director of Economic Development and Innovation for the City of Carlsbad. "Allowing one business to remove parking means the loss of convenient parking that the nearby shops, restaurants, offices, and personal care services rely upon to draw customers."Despite the circumstances, Rammel got the permit to use four parking spots and built a deck."I begged and pleaded, 'please can we get a prorated amount, can we do month to month, is there any way you can work with us because you are depleting our cash flow at a time where we desperately need cash flow to survive this,'" she said.She paid the fees in full and spent an additional ,000 to have the temporary deck built."When Governor Newsom tells us we can go back inside, we have to tear it down," she said. "We don't get to keep it."The painful costs during an already difficult time were the only solution to keeping way Rammel's business running."We had to pull that ,500 from our savings," she said. "If we're not serving customers, we're not making profits, and we cannot pay our bills."She said leaders from other cities in the county that have waived permitting costs have personally reached out to her to show support.There may be some hope left."We understand that these are not normal times.
