SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cool zones are open around San Diego County as the weather heats up. The cool zones, spread out throughout the county, provide designated air-conditioned facilities that provide a place to beat the heat. According to county officials, the cool zones provide a place where seniors and others can congregate to protect their health and reduce individual energy costs. The program has been in operation since 2001. The County Health and Human Services Agency Aging and Independence Services partners with San Diego Gas and Electric to provide the service. Be your most physically active during the coolest part of the day, usually between 4-7 a.m. Pace yourself when engaging in physical activity.Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not being used, stay on the lowest floor. Keep shades down and blinds closed, but windows slightly open.Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.Avoid using the oven.Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's heat.Air out hot cars before getting into them.Never leave children or pets inside vehicles at any time, even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach lethal levels no matter what the weather is like.Drink more fluids than usual even if you do not feel thirsty.Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine; they make the heat's effects on your body worse.Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increases metabolic heat.Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.If you take diuretics, ask your physician about a lower dosage during hot weather.If it is safe to do so, leave windows open at night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents say they found human remains in the Tijuana River Valley early Saturday.The agents discovered the human remains near the Tijuana River just before 8:20 a.m. on Dairy Mart Road and Clear Water Way, according to City News Service and Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison.The investigation was turned over to the San Diego Police Department's homicide detectives. 10News has reached out to San Diego Police, but have yet to hear back.No further information was immediately available.City News Service contributed to this report. 572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Dangerously hot temperatures continue to scorch San Diego County's inland areas and deserts. Many of those areas hit peak temperatures well into the triple digits. Many inland residents chose to spend the day on the coast to escape the blistering heat.They say home is where the heart is. But for Peggy Dudenhoeffer, home is where the heat is. The Fallbrook resident drove 50 miles south Saturday, to enjoy the day in Bankers Hill, where it was about 15 degrees cooler."We feel like we're on vacation!" she said. "I like it better out here. We're lucky to be in San Diego to be able to sit outdoors in the summertime."She and her friend were at Barrio Star restaurant, which moved its operations all outdoors because of COVID-19 restrictions. But the restaurant was not going to let the heatwave turn customers away. They installed misters onto their rooftop overflow area."Right now, with this weather, it couldn't be better," Barrio Star General Manager, Michael Simpson, said. "Some nice mist, some nice picnic tables, and some nice margaritas!"Some preferred being closer to natural water. ABC 10News met professional skater, Lance Lynn, at Mission Beach."Inland, it's crazy hot," Lynn said. "Yesterday, I had to go to Ocean Beach just to escape the heat."Lynn said there was no way he could practice his skills back near his inland area home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least one person died in a Bay Park crash as rain soaked the roads in San Diego County Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 6 a.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate 5 just before Clairemont Drive. CHP reports that the vehicle was traveling at high speeds just before the crash. At least three vehicles were involved in the crash. According to CHP, the driver of a pickup truck crashed into the center divide before being struck by two other vehicles. The driver of the truck was standing outside his vehicle when he was hit and killed by one of the vehicles. The driver was 48-year-old Joseph Vito Berardino, according to the medical examiner. At this time, it’s unclear how many more people may have been injured. 794

Overall, California ranked 21st on the list of best and worst states for military retirees. The Golden State ranked 9th for quality of life, 3rd for number of VA health facilities per number of veterans and 5th for number of VA benefits-administration facilities per number of veterans. Dragging California down to the 21st spot however, is the cost of living. The state ranked 51st for housing affordability and 49th for percent of veteran-owned businesses. California also ranked 48th for its percentage of homeless veterans and 12th for veteran job opportunities.
