SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The body of a 14-year-old boy was found near railroad tracks by a maintenance crew in the Bay Ho neighborhood, sheriff's officials said.At about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the crew discovered someone who appeared to be struck by a train in the area of 6000 Santa Fe St., according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department homicide unit.After an investigation at the scene by the sheriff's Railroad Enforcement Team, the homicide unit took over the case, Seiver said.The boy has been identified and his next of kin notified, but his name is being withheld because it may jeopardize the investigation, the lieutenant said.The county Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death, Seiver said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff's homicide unit at 858-285-6330 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 929

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The median price of a home in San Diego County rose by 8 percent in July, compared with the same month a year earlier, a real estate information service announced Thursday.According to CoreLogic, the median price of a San Diego County home was 9,750 last month, up from 7,000 in July 2017. A total of 3,607 homes were sold in the county, down 3.5 percent from 3,739 during the same month the previous year.A total of 21,277 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 540 new COVID-19 infections and one new death related to the illness, raising the region's total to 59,656 cases and 908 deaths as the county continues to await news on whether it will sink into the dreaded purple tier of the state's four-tiered COVID-19 reopening plan.State officials reported Wednesday that San Diego County had an unadjusted new daily coronavirus case rate of 8.7 per 100,000. The adjusted case rate had dropped to 7.4 per 100,000, above the baseline of 7, qualifying the state for the purple, or most restrictive tier of the reopening plan. Last week's unadjusted case rate was 7.8 per 100,000.According to the reopening plan, a county has to report data exceeding a more restrictive tier's guidelines for two consecutive weeks before being moved to that more restrictive tier. A county then has to be in that tier for a minimum of three weeks before it may move to a less restrictive tier.San Diego County has been in the red tier for months, skirting but ultimately avoiding the purple tier, which would necessitate the closure of almost all indoor operations of nonessential businesses. Recent trends have shown a slow but steady increase in infection numbers.If the county cannot drop its adjusted daily case rate below 7 per 100,000, indoor operations in locations such as restaurants, museums, places of worship, breweries and retail businesses will have to either close entirely, move to outdoor operations only or modify in other ways.In recent weeks, the region had an unadjusted rate well above the purple tier guidelines, but a significant effort to increase the volume of tests had allowed for an adjustment to bring it back to the red, or substantial, tier.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said retail operations, including indoor shopping centers, will be limited to 25% of building capacity, down from the current 50%. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Seven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 57, compared to 30 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.The ages of the patients ranged from 60 to 89, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.The total number of cases dropped for the third week in a row. The county logged 1,548 cases last week, compared to 1,689 the week before."While influenza cases have continued to decline, flu activity is still widespread in the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventive measures to avoid getting sick."The seasonal total of influenza cases is now 15,097. Last flu season saw 4,414 by this time and 9,655 in total.County health officials are encouraging people who are sick to first contact their health care provider by telephone or arrange an urgent appointment, but to go to an emergency department if they have any of the following symptoms:-- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath;-- chest pain or abdominal pain;-- sudden dizziness;-- confusion;-- severe or persistent vomiting; or-- flu-like symptoms that appear to get better, but then return with a fever and worse cough.County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and lung disease, and people age 65 or older.Residents can take precautions against contracting the virus by frequent hand washing, cleaning commonly touched surfaces, avoiding contact with sick people, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, retail pharmacies and the county's public health centers.
