SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A gas leak prompted a major freeway closure in the heart of San Diego County early Wednesday, lasting hours and causing delays just as long.The leak was reported just before 11 a.m. near Ulric Street and Friars Road in Mission Valley. State Route 163 was closed in both directions from Interstate 805 to I-8 shortly after.San Diego Gas and Electric said crews must let the line "bleed out," which could last hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A cold winter storm is set to bring rain and snow to San Diego County starting Monday, according to the National Weather Service.The agency says the San Diego County mountains could see as much as six inches of snow, sparking a winter storm watch from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday.The heaviest snow is expected to fall above 5,500 feet with lighter amounts down to 4,500 feet.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your areaMeanwhile, other parts of the county could see much-needed rain totaling as much as one inch. Thunderstorms are also possible, the agency said.A beach hazards statement was issued Saturday ahead of the storm. Waves and surf of four to seven feet are expected with sets as high as eight feet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Carlsbad company is contributing to Australia's relief efforts for some of the country's most vulnerable victims.North San Diego County's Oska Wellness sent several devices to an animal hospital in New Wales. Its goal is to help offer pain relief for severely burned koalas. The device, the Oska Pulse, uses electromagnetic pulses to help damaged cells heals. The goal is to speed up the recovery process to allow the animals begin rehabilitation sooner. 487

Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. The state's previous high for deaths was set Saturday with 225.On Tuesday, Newsom ordered 5,000 body bags during a surge in deaths over the past week, averaging over 160 per day."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said Tuesday. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom also said that 60 refrigerated storage units are ready to be mobilized across California should hospitals become overwhelmed with virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is pleading for their father back after they say officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended him on June 20. Their father is expected in court on July 18. Gilberto Mayorga's children say it's hard to imagine life separated from him. "He's been here's since he was 17, 16. All he knows is San Diego. All he knows being here," his daughter, Eugenia Mayorga said. They say their father met their mother and started their family. He was deported but quickly came back so he could help their mother, who was struggling to support their family. "As soon as he came back, I remember having a roof over our heads," his daughter Bridgette Rembao, said. "I feel like the only crime he made was to come back and financially support us." ICE painted a different picture of Mayorga. ICE officials say he had previously been removed from the country five times. He served 100 days in federal prison for illegally entering the country. They say he has two felony criminal convictions for drug offenses and was sentenced to more than than five months in jail. He was also convicted of two other misdemeanors. ICE officials released the following statement to 10News:“While no class of alien present in the country illegally is exempt from ICE enforcement efforts, ICE officers do prioritize individuals they seek to apprehend and remove including criminal aliens, especially those who have repeatedly ignored our nation’s immigration laws.” 1500
