The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a new study resource, “Words of the Champions,” for students participating in spelling competitions occurring between August 2019 and March 2020. The Bee selected the 4,000 words for Words of the Champions from the Bee’s official dictionary, Merriam-Webster Unabridged. Words of the Champions replaces “Spell It!,” a collection of 1,150 words used by students to prepare for spelling bees since 2006. Each year, the Bee will refresh Words of the Champions by replacing 800 words. “Spellers and teachers told us they wanted more words, and we’ve delivered,” said Paige Kimble, executive director for the Bee. “This broader list was designed to challenge and inspire students and is the culmination of a year of research and development by our team.” Nested in Words of the Champions are 450 words sourced from the 18 engaging and grade-appropriate books included in the Bee’s 2020 Great Words, Great Works reading program. By reading the books, students can gain a deeper understanding of the words they are learning to spell. As they begin their spelling bee journey, they will spell many of these 450 words in classroom and school spelling competitions. On Aug. 20, Words of the Champions and other study materials will be available for teachers at Bee-enrolled schools to download from spellingbee.com. On the same day, an Amazon Kindle version of Words of the Champions will be available for purchase by members of the general public. About the Scripps National Spelling Bee: The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational program. The purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Three suspects have been identified in the murder of Joshua Brown, a witness in the trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who was convicted of murdering her neighbor Botham Jean.Jacquerious Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and Thaddeous Green have been named as suspects in the shooting death of Brown, authorities said Tuesday.Jacquerious Mitchell, 20, is in custody, Assistant Chief of Police Avery Moore said at a news conference Tuesday. The other two suspects are being sought.According to Dallas police, the suspects traveled from Alexandria, Louisiana, to purchase drugs from 28-year-old Brown. According to Jacquerious, Green, 22, contacted Brown to purchase drugs, authorities said. The two got into a physical altercation, police said. Jacquerious exited his vehicle and Brown shot him in the chest. Jacquerious fell and heard two gunshots, police said at the press conference. Jacquerious told police Green shot Brown twice in the lower body. Green then allegedly took Brown’s backpack and the gun used to shoot Jacquerious and they sped off. Michael Mitchell, 32, was named as the driver."Jacquerious is driven to the hospital and where he is now in police custody," Dallas police said. "Warrants will be executed for him and the other two suspects for Capital murder."Police said they confiscated 12 pounds of marijuana, 149 grams of THC cartridges and ,157 in cash from Brown's apartment after executing a search warrant.Authorities also clarified some rumors swirling around Brown's death."The rumors shared by community leaders that Mr. Brown’s death was related to the Amber Guyger trial and that DPD was responsible are false," police said. "We encourage those leaders to be mindful because their words may jeopardize the integrity of the city of Dallas and DPD."Brown was found in a parking lot outside an apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds two days after Guyger was convicted of murder. Guyger fatally shot her neighbor, Jean, in September 2018. The former police officer testified that she thought the apartment she entered was her own and that Jean was an intruder. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.Brown lived across the hall from Jean at Dallas' South Side Flats apartments, where Guyger killed Jean. He was a key witness in Guyger's trial. 2307

This year, voters in 31 of the nation’s 100 largest cities will choose a mayor in municipal elections that historically don’t garner the same numbers in terms of voter turnout as presidential elections. But the makers of a new smartphone voting app think they can make it easier for people to vote. This week, Denver became only the second place in the country to ever allow voting by smart phone. It’s called Voatz. Yes, a weird spelling, but it’s a straightforward concept: it’s an app for voting. “To get through verification, they have to take a ten second selfie video,” said Jocelyn Bucaro of Denver’s elections division, who says the app utilizes an individual’s biometric data—like face recogmition or thumbprint technology. “They have to look at the camera, they have to blink, move their head, so that the system knows it’s not a video of a photo," she said. Bucaro thinks that one day, this will be how we’ll all cast our ballots.“If we want to maintain a democratic system and have as many people participating as possible then some form of this will likely be available for all voters," Bucaro said.Right now, it’s just available for active duty military stationed overseas. But there’s a reason for that. Currently service members have to print, sign, scan, then email the document to election officials.Former FBI cybersecurity expert Andre McGregor said that made them the perfect group to pilot the technology.“When you compare it to the current, everything is better than a PDF sent via email, even fax is better than that,” McGregor said.McGregor is talking about the obvious concern with a voting system like this: security, something he says he was concerned about at first, too.“I had just as many skeptical thoughts as most other people thinking about the idea of voting on a device that’s in your hand.”McGregor looked into the potential pitfalls of the app before it went live with West Virginia’s military voters last year, and the app, which uses block chain technology, exceeded his expectations. He says trying it out on small groups is a good way to make sure it’s ready to go mainstream; disabled voters might be next to try it. 2168

The wildfires torching southern Australia have wiped out much of the koala population, stoking fears that the national icon is getting closer to extinction."In what is a national tragedy, the bushfires in and around Port Macquarie in November devastated a genetically diverse koala population," Port Macquarie Koala Hospital said."As many as 350 koalas have perished, with approximately 75% of the fireground footprint being prime koala habitat."The hospital established a 485
