SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hotels hit hard by the coronavirus are getting a reprieve thanks to Labor Day weekend, as tourists snatch up rooms along our coast.Elvin Lai, who owns Pacific Beach's Ocean Park Inn, says he's pretty much booked with premium rates. And, for the first time this summer, he's getting calls from overbooked hotel managers needing to find rooms for overflow guests. "I think people are just saying, I've got to get out, I don't care how long the drive is, let's just go," Lai said. Lai said resort-centric hotels like his are make-or-break during the summer, so it hit particularly hard when the coronavirus led to mass cancellations. Making matters worse, Lai had just spent million upgrading the hotel's 71 rooms."It was just like, boom! Uppercut to the chin," Lai said. "I couldn't plan for it. I couldn't forecast it. There was no model to look at."Now, he's in for a different challenge, because his hotel is understaffed, and he says he is struggling to fill positions. So, come Tuesday, Lai said he will not have the capability to make every room available for a quick turnaround.Additionally, multiple vacation rental hosts told ABC 10News that they are fully booked for the holiday weekend,Overall, occupancy remains down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eight San Diego County gyms have filed a lawsuit against state and county leaders over the public health orders due to the coronavirus pandemic.The gym owners say that restrictions on their business by California and the county have caused, "difficulty in satisfying their financial obligations, having been forced to lay off a significant number of employees" and they have "expended large sums of money in an effort to comply with Defendants’ vague orders."Gym owners say they have lost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases, retrofitting their businesses to be compliant with reopening measures.The Plaintiffs include Metroflex Gym in Oceanside, Ramona Fitness Center in Ramona, Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, Deadweight Strength in Grantville, Convoy Strength in Kearny Mesa, IB Fitness in Imperial Beach, and Being Fit in both Clairemont and Mira Mesa.The owners added that they have sought clarification of the orders and how they're enforced by law enforcement and the county, but have not received any clarification from officials.The lawsuit claims that public health orders labeling their businesses as nonessential without allowing them to challenge it, and mandatory closures, are not constitutional.Defendants include Gov. Gavin Newsom, all five San Diego County supervisors, and the mayors of each city where the gyms are located. Various local law enforcement and public health officials, including Wilma Wooten, Sheriff Bill Gore, and SDPD Chief David Nisleit, were also named. 1548

And what an exciting times it is, as the centerpiece of the plans includes a brand new stadium. "It will become the signature project that defines the future. Not only for SDSU, but for higher education in California," says San Diego State President Adela de la Torre.The project will include an innovative educations district, 86 acres of land used for a park and recreation, affordable housing, a hotel, and of course, a 35 thousand seat stadium "I can't wait to see the team run on to Basher field and enjoy the cheers of 35 thousand fans,"says de la Torre.Equally excited is Aztecs Director of Athletics JD Wicker."We are building a stadium for Aztecs football, international and professional soccer, concerts, and any other event you can think of. You name it, we'll host it."And who knows, maybe someday San Diego will see the return of the NFL.Jack McGrory, a member of the SDSU Board of Trustees, says the new stadium will be built with the NFL in mind.
