SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego lifeguards reported that although about 155,000 beachgoers hit San Diego beaches Saturday and Sunday, the number of rescues and medical assists made by lifeguards was not excessive going into the third day of the Labor Day weekend.``On Saturday there were about 120,000 people on the beaches, and on Sunday there were about 135,000 people,'' said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. ``We did about 2,000 preventative acts each day.'' Lerum said the number of rescues made both days was relatively light.`We made 15 rescues on Saturday, and 42 rescues on Sunday, mostly because the ocean has been pretty calm,'' he said. `We had more medical aids, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. We're going to probably have more than that for Labor Day, but the final figures are not yet in.''`The bulk of what we've been doing on the beaches has been taking care of sick and injured people,'' said Lerum. ''We also had a flurry of kayak rescues, About five kayaks tipped over into the ocean. We rescued those kayaks. Everybody is fine.''There was lots of boating activity over the holiday weekend.Lerum said a person fell from either Ocean Beach Pier or the seawall there about 5:30 p.m. on Labor Day. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to amend an agreement between former Mayor Bob Filner and the developer Carmel Partners over the development of an apartment complex that drew criticism.The development's current owner, Trea Blvd63, LLC, sought to nullify the agreement, which required the development's owner to rent apartments to tenants by the room rather than by the bed. When it was being built in 2013, opponents of the apartment complex argued that it more closely resembled a dormitory rather than the luxury units it was billed as.``I applaud my council colleagues for correcting these corrupt mistakes of the past, and moving forward from Filner's blatant misuse of power,'' Sherman said. ``This is a good reminder that big problems happen when elected officials abuse the power of their office.''Carmel Partners began work on the CentrePoint apartment complex, located in Rolando, in 2013. The city ordered the stoppage of construction of the complex, citing the need for additional construction permits. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,867 new COVID-19 infections, a new record, eclipsing the previous one of 2,287 last Friday by nearly 800 cases, marking more than 100,000 total cases in the county since the pandemic began.Friday marked the third consecutive day more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 11th day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 19th of the last 22 to reach that mark. It is just the fifth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.The data released Friday, along with 23 deaths, raises the region's cumulative totals to 102,466 confirmed infections and 1,137 deaths.Of 25,002 tests reported Friday, 11 percent returned positive, raising the 14-day average of new cases to 8% -- a record.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals still have 18% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday.
