LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Charges have been issued against a La Mesa store owner arrested over an altercation with the media. According to the City of La Mesa, charges against Peter Carzis, 76, include one count of felony vandalism and three counts of misdemeanor battery.An additional misdemeanor charge of committing a lewd act in public was also issued for an incident that occurred on January 18. Monday, news crews gathered outside Peter’s Men’s Apparel, a clothing store owned by Carzis, to speak with him about reports of lewd acts occurring outside the store over the weekend. As cameras rolled, Carzis was seen cursing before attacking a news photographer and slapping the phone out of a reporter’s hand. Police said Carzis caused “irreparable damage to a video camera reported to be worth approximately ,000.”According to police, Carzis "is also the suspect in two other reported crimes, a misdemeanor battery and a misdemeanor lewd act in public" that occurred on Jan. 18 in front of his store. (KGTV) — La Mesa is now accepting applications from residents to be a part of the city's Community Police Oversight Board.The city is looking for applicants for the newly-created 11-member panel that will provide recommendations to the Chief of Police, Mayor, City Council, and City Manager on La Mesa Police procedures and policies, as well as matters of public safety in the city.Applicants must be a resident of the city. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work. 1436
Ladies, having your dog sleep with you could be the key to a great night's sleep, and that's according to science.The experiment titled, "An Examination of Adult Women's Sleep Quality and Sleep Routines in Relation to Pet Ownership and Bedsharing," studied 962 American women to see how pet ownership impacted their slumber.Fifty-five percent of the woman participating in the study let at least one of their dogs sleep in their bed, 31 percent of the women shared their bed with a cat.Research shows that while cats and human partners were "disruptive," dogs were peaceful bed companions. Unlike humans and cats, according to the study "dogs have an innate ability to comfort us and help us sleep soundly without disturbing us." 757
