Two days after President Donald Trump’s visit to the city, Democratic nominee Joe Biden met with members of Jacob Blake’s family on Thursday before hosting a community discussion on race.Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who is representing the Blake family, said that the former vice president met with Blake's family for nearly 90 minutes. Blake joined for part of the conversation via telephone from his hospital bed, both Crump and Biden confirmed.“The family was grateful for the meeting and was very impressed that the Bidens were so engaged and willing to really listen,” Crump said. “Jacob's mother led them all in prayer for Jacob's recovery. They talked about changing the disparate treatment of minorities in police interactions, the impact of selecting Kamala Harris as a Black woman as his running mate. and Vice President Biden's plans for change. Mr. Blake Sr. talked about the need for systemic reform because the excessive use of force by police against minorities has been going on for far too long.”Biden said that Jacob Blake told him “nothing is going to defeat” him."I had an opportunity to spend some time with Jacob [Blake] on the phone. He's out of ICU. We spoke for about 15 minutes. His brother and two sisters, his dad and his mom on the telephone," Biden said.Blake was shot seven times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey last month. Sheskey has been placed on administrative leave per police policy. While Sheskey has not been charged with a crime, Biden said earlier this week that charges should be filed.“I do think there's a minimum need to be charged,” Biden said, also adding that the Louisville, Kentucky, officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor should also be criminally charged.Biden told Kenosha community members that fighting for racial equality “is something worth losing over." He added, "But we're not going to lose."While Biden said that he would make addressing systematic racism a priority if elected in November, Trump said on Tuesday that he does not believe systematic racism is a problem in police/community relations."I don't believe that,” Trump said during his visit to Kenosha on Tuesday. “No, I don't believe that. I think the police do an incredible job. And I think you do have some bad apples. I think you'd agree every once in a while you'll see something. And you do have the other situation too, where they're under this tremendous pressure and they don't handle it well. They call it choking and it happens."Biden promised community members in Kenosha that he would form a policing commission, vowing to invite the police and civil rights leaders to the same table. 2649

Vaping is being linked to an increased risk of Covid-19 among teenagers and young adults, according to a new study.Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine looked at connections between youth vaping and Covid-19 cases in the U.S. They analyzed online surveys conducted in May by 4,351 people between the ages of 13 and 24.Among teens and young adults who took a coronavirus test, those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to test positive.“Teens and young adults need to know that if you use e-cigarettes, you are likely at immediate risk of COVID-19 because you are damaging your lungs,” said the study’s senior author, Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, professor of pediatrics. The participants were evenly divided between those who had used e-cigarettes and those who had never used nicotine products.Participants who admitted to using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the previous 30 days were almost five times as likely to have Covid-19 symptoms, including coughing, fever, tiredness and difficulty breathing, compared to those who never smoked or vaped.Young people who vaped or smoked, or both, were about two to nine times more likely to receive COVID-19 tests than nonusers.Among those surveyed who had taken a Covid-19 test, those who had used both e-cigarettes and cigarettes in the previous 30 days were 6.8 times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus.“This study tells us pretty clearly that youth who are using vapes or are dual-using [e-cigarettes and cigarettes] are at elevated risk, and it’s not just a small increase in risk; it’s a big one,” said the study’s lead author, postdoctoral scholar Shivani Mathur Gaiha, PhD.Researchers hope their study will be a warning about the dangers of vaping, and also prompt the Food and Drug Administration to consider tighter regulations on vaping products. 1856

U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and James Lankford are backtracking on a proposed amendment that would have replaced Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday. On July 1, Johnson and Lankford filed an amendment to a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday. The amendment filed by Johnson and Lankford proposed to replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a federal holiday, in order to not add an additional federal holiday that would impact federal services and local businesses. On July 3, Johnson and Lankford said they were withdrawing the proposed amendment and introducing a modified substitute amendment that would reduce the number of paid leave days for federal employees.“Although the substitute amendment I offered to the Juneteenth holiday bill had the desired effect of slowing down the passage of a new paid day off for federal workers, many were not happy with the proposal to swap a holiday celebrating emancipation with Columbus Day,” said Johnson in a news release Friday. “Let me reiterate: I suggested Columbus Day for the swap because few Americans in the private sector get it as a paid holiday, and as a result, it is lightly celebrated, and would not be disruptive to most Americans’ schedules. I was in no way deprecating Christopher Columbus’ achievements or expressing any value judgment regarding his place in history. As I stated in an interview with the Milwaukee Press Club last Friday, I do not support efforts to erase America’s rich history, not the good, the bad or the ugly."Federal employees are given 10 paid holidays a year. Johnson said the cost of an additional 11th paid holiday would cost taxpayers 0 million.“Instead of eliminating a current holiday to make room for Juneteenth Day, I will be proposing to reduce the number of paid leave days federal employees receive, to offset the cost of the new holiday celebrating emancipation. This modification both preserves Columbus Day and the dollars of hard-working taxpayers," said Johnson. To read more about the modified amendment, click here. This story originally reported by Mayra Monroy on tmj4.com. 2128

Two leading Democratic senators want answers from Aetna Chairman and CEO Mark Bertolini after a former medical director admitted under oath that he never read patients' medical records.Ron Wyden of Oregon, the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, and Patty Murray of Washington, the ranking member of the Senate Health Committee, fired off a joint letter to Bertolini this week, saying the medical director's comments raise serious concerns about Aetna's claims review process and whether the insurance giant has broken federal law. They asked the company to respond to the letter by March 20."Using medical records is a fundamental responsibility of health insurers when they review health claims," Wyden said in a statement. "Something is gravely wrong if a leading insurance company is failing to use this basic information at the expense of families' health and peace of mind."  906

TULSA, Okla. -- For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, President Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally Saturday night. The event is scheduled to take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the BOK Center. WHO WILL ATTEND?In short, a lot of people. The Trump campaign has said over a million ticket requests have been received and overflow venues are in the works. Supporters of the president began camping outside the BOK Center on Monday to see Trump. The arena holds around 20,000. WHAT WILL BE DIFFERENT? Bob Jack, Chairman of the Tulsa County GOP, says the campaign will provide a temperature check, hand sanitizer and a mask."I feel perfectly safe going to the rally," Jack said in an interview. Wearing the mask though -- that will be up to the individual person. Jack doesn't plan on wearing his. "They're going to hand you a mask, are you going to wear it?" E.W. Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George asked Jack. "No, I'm not going to wear it. There is a lot of controversy about masks," Jack said. DOES THE PRESIDENT KNOW THE RISKS? Yes, but the White House believes the rally is still worth it even though Tulsa's top public health official has asked for the event to be postponed over fears it will spread the virus. "Are you worried?" St. George asked Kellyanne Conway, a senior advisor to the president, in an interview this week. "You aren't worried at all?""It's my job to worry, I am a mother," Conway said. "The president has made very clear he wants to get back to doing rallies. He wants to get back to the people." WHERE WILL THE PRESIDENT GO NEXT? That is very much unclear. However, campaign officials have said Arizona, Florida and North Carolina have all been discussed. All are states, though, with cases of coronavirus on the rise, which may be why the president hasn't announced any dates yet. "Is Florida likely?" St. George asked Conway. "Sure why not, everywhere is likely," Conway added. 1947
