A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown. Neal had been placed on administrative leave while the district investigated.Neal's resignation came less than a week after Scripps station WTVF in Nashville?uncovered the recording from inside a meeting of schools maintenance employees.Recording Reveals Plan To 'Bypass' Lead FilterFor the past nine months, WVTF has exposed data kept secret by the district showing high lead levels in some Metro schools. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause learning and behavioral problems in children. In response, a number of schools installed special fountains that were supposed to filter out the lead. Some of them were purchased by parents themselves. But the recording revealed Neal's plan to dismantle those efforts.Listen to the audio below:"People keep wanting these bottle fillers, but they are adamant about them being filtered," Neal told his employees. "I'm saying we cannot support it.From the beginning, Neal downplayed the threat posed by lead in the schools' drinking water  -- despite results showing levels well above what pediatricians say is safe. Audio Sparks Outrage, Mayor Calls For AnswerStill, some 30 schools installed hydration stations specifically designed to filter out the lead — some of them purchased by the parents themselves. On the recording, Neal revealed: "I did ask Troy if he would have one of his guys go through the exercise of bypassing the filter just to see how that works."But those fountains are equipped with lights that show when the filters are working and when they need to be replaced. So Neal's team came up with a solution for that, too."We've got to figure out what we are going to do with these hundred, or 97, filtered ones that we have out there," Neal told his subordinates. An unidentified woman interrupted, "Bust the light out.""Huh, do what?" Neal asked."Take the light bulb out," she answered."Well, that's one thing," Neal agreed. "But we need to also probably, if we can, bypass the filter."Neal's concern was money.MNPS Spokesperson Questions Need For Filters"If we were to replace a filter, you're talking — I don't know if any of y'all have bought them  — it's something like 70 or 80 bucks," Neal said.An unidentified man responded, "."Neal said, "That's almost ,000 a year just for filters, OK, on what we have now."After disclosure of the record, Schools Director Dr. Shawn Joseph condemned the comments captured on the recording."As a parent of two Metro Schools children and as the Director of Schools, the idea that a supervisor would discuss a workaround on our water fountains knowing that this is a huge concern for many families is upsetting and unacceptable," Joseph said.Nashville Mayor David Briley also said that "obviously, if the report is true, that person shouldn't  be responsible for protecting our children from lead in their drinking water."  3312

A pedestrian bridge suddenly collapsed onto the road below near Florida International University, crushing cars and killing at least six people Thursday.Hours after the bridge collapsed, officials said early Friday that the rescue mission is now a recovery operation.Emergency crews worked overnight in what Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zavaleta called a "very slow process" in order to preserve evidence and the safety of possible victims and rescuers, because of unstable conditions at the bridge. At least nine people were transported to hospitals for treatment, authorities said.Witnesses described hearing a loud boom Thursday and moments later, finding victims, including construction workers across the wreckage and people trapped in cars.Senator Marco Rubio, who visited the site Thursday, posted on Twitter: "The cables that suspend the #Miami bridge had loosened & the engineering firm ordered that they be tightened. They were being tightened when it collapsed today." Rubio has been a visiting professor at the university for the past 10 years. The bridge's main span, which weighs 950 ton, had just been installed Saturday over eight lanes, near the university in Miami.  1205

A new warning Tuesday cautions toxic chemicals were discovered in several popular back-to-school items. Everything from crayons and markers, to binders and water bottles. The U.S. Public Interest Research (USPIRG) groups tested 27 school supplies and found that some of them contained toxic chemicals like asbestos, lead, benzine and phthalates, which have been linked to cancer and other health hazards.“You can't assume that things are automatically safe when they're on our store shelves,” says Danny Katz, with USPIRG.Katz's team found Playskool crayon from Dollar Tree had trace amounts of asbestos. But that wasn't it.A blue jot band binder from Dollar Tree tested positive for phthalates.  Additionally, dry erase markers from Amazon tested positive for benzine, even though the packaging says nontoxic.“Just because a product says nontoxic like that, doesn't mean it's been tested for all the different chemicals,” Katz explains.Katz says what you should look for is a symbol, which confirms the product has been tested and approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. His team has put together a list for parents and teachers of products that tested positive for toxic chemicals and those that didn't.“There's just no reason that these chemicals need to be in the school supplies,” Katz says. “There's plenty of school supplies that don't have them. So we're shining a spotlight on which ones have these toxic chemicals which ones we didn't find in helping teachers and parents to stay safe.”  1535

A North Texas woman took her battle against breast cancer public, allowing the world a front row seat in the operating room while doctors perform her lumpectomy. Before heading to the hospital today, DeSoto resident Sonia Johnson spent a lot of quiet time with her family. But this morning the 50-year-old will be seen by the world as she undergoes breast cancer surgery live on Facebook. It was last December when, during a routine visit to the doctor, Johnson found out she had a tumor on her breast. It was in that moment that she became determined to use faith and positivity to beat a disease that affects one in eight women.“It’s an emotional journey, but you can’t sit,” she said. “You’ve got to be mentally ready to walk this journey. It’s a fight, it’s a fight all the way.”Johnson found she’s not alone in her fight and has gotten scores of supportive messages from breast cancer survivors — forming a sort of sisterhood. She says sharing her journey on Facebook is one way she can help others fighting the same battle.Breast surgical oncologist Allison DiPasquale, MD, will be performing the surgery. She spoke about her admiration for Johnson when talking with CBS 11 News. “This patient is courageous, she’s amazing. She’s putting her body out there for people to say, ‘Wow, I’m going to go get my mammogram and I’m going to make sure I don’t have cancer.’”Johnson said she hopes that by sharing her experience online others will get a better understanding about one of the breast cancer treatments available.“Other people paid it forward before me and now I’m pushing it and paying it forward for somebody else,” she said.During Johnson’s procedure, doctors will go through her armpit to remove her lymph nodes and cancer through the same incision and when the surgical gloves and gowns are gone Johnson plans to join that sisterhood of breast cancer survivors.“I will be able to say ‘I had cancer’. Right now I say I have cancer. Tomorrow [it will be] I ‘had’ cancer.”Breast surgeons and radiation oncologists will be in the operating room during Johnson’s lumpectomy to answer questions from Facebook users in real time. 2142

A New Mexico family found out quickly how tough it would be to travel during the pandemic.Kylah Guerra was just 20 weeks into her pregnancy when doctors diagnosed her baby, Emerie, with lung lesions in the lower respiratory tract. That was back in March at the start of the pandemic.Getting the proper care for their daughter would mean Kylah and her husband would not only need to travel to Children's Hospital Colorado but would temporarily need to live nearby.“They did let me know that since we are so far that they didn't want us, me, to be travelling back home. So, he pretty much said that day you're going to be living in Colorado until you deliver,” said Kylah.Doctors say Emerie showed no symptoms when she was born June 24.The family returned to New Mexico for a couple days but returned less than two weeks later when Emerie had trouble breathing.Due to the pandemic and the nature of Emerie's condition, getting back to Colorado meant they had to go by emergency helicopter.“In the moment, we were trying to get her what she needed. Our main priority was just getting her back to where we knew they could help her. Once we seen, the flight crew arrived at our hospital. It was like a little bit of a relief,” said Kylah. The surgery was successful, and doctors removed the lesions.Meanwhile, the pandemic hasn't slowed the number of surgeries done at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado, because they are considered essential. The hospital has seen a 61% increase in surgeries over the same time last year. About 81% of patients seen in the fetal care center are from out of state. 1628
