BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. Zhuo Lin, a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office and widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping, died of illness at 12:30 p.m. July 29 after medical treatment failed in Beijing, at the age of 93.Deng Xianqun, Deng's younger sister, recalled how Deng and Zhuo used to have a tacit understanding between each other.     "My big brother didn't love talking, but my sister-in-law was just the opposite," she said.     According to their children, Zhuo had taken care of all the details of Deng's life, including what to wear and how many sleeping pills he should take.     In 1966, when the political storms swept Deng from power as Chinese vice premier, Zhuo was bewildered, wondering what had happened exactly and what the future would hold.     But she chose to trust him and be with him.     "I've been with him for so long that I'm certain he's an upright man," she told their daughter, Deng Nan.     In 1969, Deng was exiled to eastern Jiangxi Province to work on farms.     Deng Lin, their eldest daughter, said Zhuo often spoke of the days in Jiangxi when they dug the land, pulled weeds and spread manure.     "Mother mostly did easy work, like cooking, as she was not very healthy," Deng Lin said.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama here on Saturday, who are here to attend the second trilateral leaders' meeting.     Hailing the progress of China's relations with the two countries, Hu said China is ready to make joint efforts with Japan and the ROK to implement consensus, boost healthy development of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership and China-Japan strategic mutually-beneficial ties.     The substantial cooperation between China and the two countries in various areas had been further expanded, he said.     Hu congratulated the success of the second trilateral leaders' meeting held in Beijing on Saturday, calling on the three nations to seize historical opportunities to further strengthen strategic trust, respect respective major interests and concerns, and make concerted efforts for mutual benefits and common development.     The Chinese president hopes the three countries to facilitate east Asian cooperation and jointly respond to regional hot issues and global challenges to unveil a new chapter for peace, cooperation and development of east Asia. LANZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has written a congratulatory letter to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lanzhou University in northwest China's Gansu Province.     The university has been sticking to its motto of making constant efforts to become stronger and fostering its own features, and has developed glorious patriotic and academic traditions, Hu said in the letter.     After the founding of New China and particularly the country's reform and opening up, Lanzhou University has shared the fate of the nation and kept pace with the times, and made important contribution to the economic and social development in the western regions, the president said.     He expected the university to contribute more to supporting the national program of developing the western regions, building an innovation-oriented country and a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, and stepping up the socialist modernization drive.     A grand gathering was held Saturday to commemorate the centenary of the university. BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC)plans to launch the third stage of its current campaign to deepen the study and practice of the Scientific Outlook on Development, the kernel ideology of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as the general secretary.     The third stage, which starts in September and ends in February2010, is designed to carry out at grassroots level, involving 1.22million Party organizations and 37.5 million Party members, accounting for 32.8 percent and 50 percent of the total numbers, respectively.     These were remarked by Xi Jinping, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, at Friday's meeting here to summarize the experience of the second-stage of the CPC's educational drive and usher in the third stage.     The campaign was initiated by the CPC Central Committee in September 2008, with a goal to promote the study and practice of the Scientific Outlook on Development in the whole Party. The first and second stages were conducted at higher-level Party committees.     The third stage will mainly involve Party organizations of townships, communities, villages, residential blocks, secondary schools, middle and elementary schools, hospitals, private companies, and non-government organizations, according to Xi, who is also a Secretariat member of the CPC Central Committee and head of the CPC Central Committee's leading group for the campaign.     He urged Party organizations at different levels to make substantial efforts to help "the massive Party members have a deeper understanding of the Scientific Outlook on Development."     Third stage will be focused on resolving critical problems concerning the interests of the masses and it should be integrated with the celebration of the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic, Xi said.
