American broadcaster Hugh Downs has died at the age of 99. The Downs family says Hugh died peacefully on Wednesday at his Scottsdale, Arizona home and was surrounded by family. Downs was born in Akron, Ohio on February 14, 1921.He had a career which spanned more than 60 years. Notably, Downs was a co-host on NBC's Today from 1962-1971, later he hosted 20/20 on ABC from 1978-1999 and announced for Tonight Starring Jack Paar.He also hosted the game show Concentration from 1958-1969. As a third-grade elementary school teacher, Reed Clapp never imagined he would be finishing the school year sitting inside the living room of his home. But the COVID-19 outbreak had other plans for this teacher and so many others across the country.Undeterred by a nationwide pandemic, Clapp was determined to finish out this school year the same as any other: with a play that he and fellow teacher, Karen Snyder, have produced for the last five years.“This is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever taken on,” he said, sitting inside the living room of his home in Nashville, Tennessee.The name of the show Clapp and his class would perform in years past was called, “Grammarella,” a satirical production of Cinderella, where every student plays a part of speech. The character Interrogative, for example, can only speak in questions.On the last day of every school year, Clapp’s students would perform the play in front of their classmates at Madison Creek Elementary School in Hendersonville, Tennessee. It’s become such a hit over the years that there’s typically not an empty seat in the school’s library on opening afternoon, which is also closing night. There’s only one showing.But how could Clapp, harness that same kind of magic without his kids physically at school?After a few weeks of thinking, he decided the answer to that question was right in front of him: he’d move the play to Zoom, a virtual video platform.“Instead of saying, ‘we won’t have a play this year,’ we decided to say, ‘how can we do something that is original and something these kids are proud of?” he said.As summer vacation loomed, Clapp and his third-graders began to double down on their work. This energetic 33-year-old teacher with a thick southern drawl knew the script for “Grammarella” would have to be thrown out. So, he started from scratch and came up with an original screenplay, “Zoomarella.”Students auditioned for lead roles on Zoom, and they even practiced social distancing by picking up costumes that Mr. Clapp and Ms. Snyder had left outside on their front porches.Over the course of a few weeks, the play started coming together. Eight and 9-year-old students learned how to be punctual for rehearsal times, that instead of being held in the classroom, they were being held on Zoom. While Clapp’s original intent was to help students learn grammar, he quickly released that “Zoomarella” was teaching his students more important life skills.“Yes, they’re 8 years old, but when we say, ‘we need some light behind you,’ what we’re really saying is, ‘what can you do to put a light behind you?’” he explained.“These kids have become set designers, light designers, camera operators. It’s amazing,” he added.And for students facing isolation at home, rehearsals offered a sense of a vehicle for creativity that might have otherwise been lost when the school closed.“The stuff that has been the hardest is getting facial expressions and acting with your body. You have to use your body and facial expressions and not just when it’s your turn to talk,” explained 9-year-old Autumn Fair.Weeks of practicing finally paid off for Fair and her classmates, as “Zoomarella” was performed without a hitch during the last week of school. And even though the kids might not have been able to hear the applause through their Zoom meeting, Clapp says he couldn’t have been prouder of his kids.“I hope they take away a moment in time that’s been captured in a unique way. As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy.It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans.As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added.As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549
Another Confederate statue came down on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus this week.A crowd of nearly 250 protestors took down the statue known as Silent Sam on the eve of the new school year.According to a school website, the statue was built in 1913 and was put up to commemorate Confederate soldiers from the university, "who died for their beloved Southland" during the Civil War.The removal of the statue comes months after students and some faculty began calling for it to be taken down.As that played out in North Carolina, another monumental change occurred in Oklahoma, as the Tulsa Public Schools, after weeks of debate, voted to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary School.In the past three years, over 100 Confederate monuments have been removed. However, far more remain, and are still being cataloged. They’re also not just in the south.According to a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 1,700 monuments and namesakes, commemorating the Confederacy remain."The SPLC, of course, does not support destruction of memorials,” says Lecia Brooks, with the SPLC. “We just believe they should be removed from public space to a place where they can be taught about in context-- to a museum, to an archive.”Brooks says the two events this week, both occurring at the very start of the school year, sends a message that the debate is far from over."College admins do themselves a disservice and underplay the students if they think that they’re just going to simply forget about these things at the end of the school year and come back and start a school year anew with the same monuments existing,” Brooks says. “I think it’s wonderful.
