SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A landmark Supreme Court ruling today extended workplace protections for LGBTQ workers nationwide.Years ago, and a few months into a new job in San Diego, Lina Craychee says she came out as transgender and was promptly transferred from a store location to a corporate job."My boss told me I had to. They wouldn't let me present as female in the store level, because it would hurt business," said Craychee.Craychee says she kept silent and accepted the transfer because she needed the job. It's the type of silence she hopes will fade away after an historic Supreme Court ruling. By a 6-3 majority, the court extended 1964 Civil Rights Act protections to LGBTQ employees, who now can't be fired or discriminated against in the workplace because of their sexual orientation.While California protects LGBTQ workers against discrimination, nearly 30 states do not."Huge feeling of relief and victory," said Eddie Reynoso, executive director of the Equality Business Alliance in San Diego.Last fall, Reynoso camped for 72 hours on the Supreme Court steps for the opportunity to witness the arguments."In terms of impact, this will be bigger than the marriage equality ruling," said Reynoso.Reynoso says the ruling sends a powerful message across the country."Ultimately it means the workplace is going to be a safer place. LGBT workers will have an affirming work environment," said Reynoso.While this ruling is directed at the workplace, experts say this could open to door for other challenges involving LGBTQ discrimination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego County public defender has pleaded guilty to giving a firearm to a felon.Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Penasquitos man says on Sunday morning he walked outside to discover someone had broken into most of the mailboxes on his street. He added that even mailboxes that had locks had been pried open and left empty.“I woke up this morning to pick up my newspaper and I noticed every mailbox up and down the street and adjacent streets I could see had been opened and all the mail had been removed,” he said. The neighbor asked ABC 10News not to be identified.He said he’s lived in the area for about 10 years and it’s generally quiet. They had one incident a few years ago where mail was stolen around tax return season. He’s concerned about this theft because of the looming November election.“I kinda felt it might’ve had something to do with stealing the ballots,” he said.He said both he and his next door neighbor had received their ballots in the days immediately before the theft. Other neighbors in the area also said they already got their ballots in the mail, but the incident is a reminder to be extra cautious with important voting documents moving through the postal system.“Personally, I’ve never been a victim of crime here, or do I know anybody that’s been a victim of crime here, so it’s something that’s concerning,” he said.The neighbor added that he did email the registrar’s office to let them know of the possibility of stolen ballots in his neighborhood. 1407

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A mysterious monolith that appeared in a San Diego parking lot earlier this week is gone, the structure torn down by a group of people in an incident captured on social media Tuesday night. The monolith was in the Scripps Ranch Marketplace parking lot. Similar structures have been popping up all over the country and the world since mid-November. In videos posted to social media, a large group of people can be seen pushing over and then carrying away the shiny, sleek object late Tuesday evening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. He was uncooperative with officers, police said, and a Taser was deployed after the confrontation escalated.Witness statements indicated Denham approached officers with a metal chain and refused verbal commands to stop by officers. After he started swinging the chain, a Taser was used unsuccessfully.Police added that Officer Pitts gave multiple warnings while backing up and trying to distance himself, which Denham ignored.After swinging at him again, Officer Pitts fired on Denham, striking him once. Denham was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries.Two other officers arrived to place Denham in handcuffs, though he continued to resist.No officers were injured during the incident.Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call SDPD at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1806
