SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans are continuing to push to get through to the state agency that handles unemployment claims, as bills come due.The region's unemployment rate is now a record 15%, as 195,000 people lost their jobs in April. Meanwhile, the Employment Development Department continues to be inundated with people trying call. The agency plans to add 1,800 temporary full-time and hourly workers over the coming weeks to handle the influx."It would be so helpful if I could just reach out to someone," said Ashley Porter, of El Cajon, who can't get through to ask why she has not received unemployment. "It's been very stressful for me."Porter still has a job at a medical call center, but had to reduce her hours to take care of her six-year-old daughter, Adalynn, whose school closed. The EDD's website says people who take that step may be eligible for jobless benefits, but that it's on a case-by-case basis and involves a phone interview.Porter says she never got that phone call, but what did arrive was a letter that she is eligible for up to 8 per week. But when she goes online to claim benefits, she gets an error message that reads - benefits exceeded. Her calls and emails to EDD are going unanswered. "I just feel so low, I just feel like I've worked so long and I've worked so hard that I mean, now that this has happened, can I just get a little assistance?" said Porter, who says her employer has not allowed her position to work from home. A spokesperson for the EDD expressed empathy for Porter's situation, but declined to discuss specifics. The spokesperson said, however, that the benefits exceeded message probably means the claimant makes too much to get benefits.State law says workers with reduced hours are eligible for unemployment if 75% of their reduced earnings comes out to less than what their weekly unemployment check would be. Porter says she's now earning about 0 per week at her reduced hours. But 75% of 0 is 0. That's more than the 8 she would receive.Meanwhile, she says she's getting behind on bills. She added her ,700 rent is coming due, and she's working on a payment plan with her landlord. 2170

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego frontline workers are getting their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and hope with the approval of Moderna's vaccine we will achieve herd immunity soon and get back to normal.Tri-City Medical Center Emergency Room Dr. Jeff Shellenberger said he was grateful he was notified he could get his shot Sunday."It was really quick, I think I waited like two minutes," he said.Timing is critical for the Pfizer vaccine, which needs to be stored between -112°F to -76°, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Once thawed, undiluted vials may be stored at room temperature for no more than 2 hours, according to the Food and Drug Administration.Dr. Shellenberger said he felt a huge sense of relief wash over him after getting the shot."There's going to be a force field around me in a few weeks to months it's going to be amazing!" he joked. "It's really great because when I go to work I don't have to worry about any of my coworkers getting sick. Just the other day I had a patient of mine and he was a coworker and so it's always kind of scary to see that, but it's great to get to see friends and family again and not have to worry."He said it takes about 5 weeks and two shots to reach full immunity. The CDC's advisory committee voted Sunday 13-1 frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round of COVID-19 vaccine distribution.Frontline essential workers include first responders, educators, food, agriculture, manufacturing, postal service, grocery and corrections workers.About 30,000,000 Americans fall into that category. They suggested the next phase, 1C, prioritizes adults ages 65 - 75, people with pre-existing conditions, and other essential workers.Initial vaccine doses already are going to residents in long-term care facilities and health care workers."Nice to report our Western States Scientific Safety Review Committee reviewed the Moderna trial and unanimously supported it's safety and efficacy," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a video he tweeted Sunday, excited to have two vaccines in their arsenal to fight the pandemic.Dr. Shellenberger just hopes everyone comes together in 2021."I think in this past year we've had a whole lot of division. A lot of us have been using technology unfortunately to sow a greater divide amongst us and I hope that this new technology this amazing vaccine that's super effective, I hope going forward in 2021 we're able to use it to bring humanity together," he said. 2523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans living in recreational vehicles will soon have an opportunity to find refuge in the city's newest safe parking lot, an expansion of the City's Safe Parking ProgramThe City-funded lot will be in Mission Valley, operated by Jewish Family Service.Right now, there are four safe parking lots, but only one allows RVs."No one told me life was going to be easy, ok? I understand that I get that concept, but can we get a break once in a while? Just a little break, that's how I looked at this. This was my break," said Jeff Tracy.Tracy is referring to the safe parking lot on Imperial Avenue which accommodates RVs; it's operated by Dreams for Change."Because you can't function and take care of your basic needs if you're worried about your basic needs."Tracy's life forever changed seven years ago when a drunk driver crashed into the vehicle he was in with his wife and daughter. Tracy was the only one who survived, and he lost one of his legs. He's been struggling ever since. "It's a very learning process being homeless, and I don't like it, and I know most people don't, it's a hard life."Some RV owners like Tracy worry they'll have to move their RV during the day if they're moved to the new parking lot. He not only has to get his wheelchair in and out of the RV but says the cost of gas would be astronomical. "Expensive, hard, it's stressful, because now I've got to move it and where am I going to move it to? I've got to pull over here to some resident again, and they're going to get upset, I don't want to upset people," said Tracy.Tracy says the Safe Parking Program has given him a place to feel safe while he tries to plan for a better future. The new parking lot is set to open next month. 1745
