The Scripps National Spelling Bee has released the 27 titles that are on its 2020-21 Great Words, Great Works booklist.The list of books is for students that span from first to eighth grade and will help students prep for their annual school spelling bee with a list of 450 words that are on the School Spelling Bee Study List each year."Parents and teachers are always looking (especially during the summer) for reading suggestions for kids," The Scripps National Spelling Bee said. "The Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes the important connection between reading and spelling. Before our competitors were great spellers, they were great readers. With that in mind, the Bee team intentionally selected its school-level spelling study words from engaging, age-appropriate books. The Bee organized those titles into the Great Words, Great Works book list. This year, students can expand their vocabularies and their world views while hearing from a diverse cast of characters on topics such as climate change, homelessness, immigration, gender identity, and the power of dreaming. The state of Oregon became the first in the nation to decriminalize small amounts of hard drugs like heroin and cocaine by overwhelmingly passing Measure 110 on Tuesday.According to The Oregonian, the measure will reduce misdemeanor drug possession to a non-criminal violation, punishable by measures similar to a traffic stop. Violators will be given a ticket and a 0 fine, or be given the option of being screened for a subtance abuse disorder.Those found with larger amounts of drugs, who would have previously been charged with a felony, will now face a misdemeanor charge. The measure also redirects tax revenue from the sale of legal marijuana in the state toward Addiction Recover Centers, where people are screened for drug use and can also receive treatment for drug addiction.Supporters of the measure say the new policy will reduce the state's jail population, and in particular, free many offenders of non-violent crimes. The US Department of Education has opened an investigation into the Ohio State University's handling of former students' allegations of sexual misconduct by a school doctor, according to the university.The federal investigation will be conducted by the department's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), which oversees Title IX complaints, the school said in a statement Thursday.The inquiry, led by the OCR's regional office in Cleveland, Ohio, "will examine whether the university is responding promptly and equitably to complaints and reports by former students," the statement said, "including allegations that employees knew or should have known about the sexual misconduct and allowed the abuse to continue."The scandal surrounding the alleged actions of the late Dr. Richard Strauss has grown since the university first announced in April its own investigation, headed by the law firm Perkins Coie, to look into claims made by male former athletes on 14 sports teams.Since then, more than 100 former Ohio State University students have reported firsthand accounts of sexual misconduct by Strauss, the school said last month.Some of them, mostly former student athletes, have come forward to publicly claim that Strauss sexually abused them under the guise of a medical examination.According to the school, the alleged abuse took place between 1979 and 1997."We welcome the involvement and careful oversight of OCR and look forward to providing any information we can," said Gates Garrity-Rokous, the school's vice president and chief compliance officer, in a statement about the US Department of Education's investigation."We responded promptly and appropriately to the allegations received in April about Dr. Strauss," Garrity-Rokous continued.
