SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hazardous Materials Team is investigating a Rancho Bernardo residence following reports of a possible fentanyl overdose death at the home Thursday morning.Crews responded at around 4 a.m. to calls of an overdose at a residence at 11300 Calenda Road located a few blocks from Westwood Elementary School.First responders discovered an unconscious 27-year-old male. The victim was declared deceased at the scene, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials. Neighbors told 10News the man lived at the home with his parents.While at the scene, our 10News crew saw a woman being escorted out of the house and placed in an ambulance. It’s still unclear how she’s involved.The San Diego County Medical Examiner will identify the man and confirm his cause of death. 800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local high school teacher is using her classroom to foster conversations about social justice. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller.With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course.It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. "I just wanted to start the new school year with ultimately the most relevant and interesting materials for the kids in my class."Students taking the Literature and Social Justice course will receive high school credit and credit towards admission to CSU and University of California schools. 1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night after being shot during a fight in Lincoln Park, San Diego Police say.According to police, two men were involved in a fight on the 300 block of Euclid Avenue around 9 p.m.During the fight, police say one of the men produced a handgun when both men were shot.Officers were called to the scene after receiving reports of gunshots heard in the area. When they arrived, officers found both men with apparent gunshot wounds.One of the men was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the other was pronounced dead at the scene.Both men are from National City and have been identified, but police are not releasing their names at this time.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person is back in ICE custody and in isolation after they were taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center to be evaluated for possible coronavirus symptoms.The individual was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when officials determined the person needed to be taken to Sharp Chula Vista, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man suffered serious injuries after a scooter crash on the Mission Beach boardwalk late Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. near Ocean Front Walk and San Luis Obispo Place. Authorities say a 55-year-old man on a bicycle and a 27-year-old man on a scooter collided on the boardwalk."His bike was upside and he was just laying there," said Nicole Ryujin, who saw the aftermath. "He wasn’t moving and at first I was like, 'is this guy okay?'" Police say the 55-year-old was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but not life threatening. According to police, the 27-year-old didn't suffer any injuries. Investigators say the scooter rider was headed north on the boardwalk, and the biker was headed south, when they collided. At this time, it's unclear exactly what led to the crash. Traffic investigators questioned the scooter rider on scene. Investigators say there is no criminal investigation at this time. 987
