LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A famous South American chef says he was stopped as he brought 40 piranhas in a duffel bag through Los Angeles International Airport.Virgilio Martinez, chef-owner of Central restaurant in Peru, tells the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he hoped to serve the predatory, sharp-toothed fish during an LA food festival.Martinez was featured in the third season of the Netflix show "Chef's Table."He says customs agents pulled him into an interrogation room last week when they found the cache of frozen, vacuum-sealed piranhas.After five hours, the agents let Martinez through with the fish. He used them that night on a salad. LONG ISLAND — Mini horses visited health care workers at Katz Women’s Hospital on Long Island as an expression of gratitude toward the overtaxed medical staff.HorseAbility, a Long Island organization, brought the horses to the hospital for the visit on world gratitude day.Normally, the horses work with people with special needs, but the team at HorseAbility felt health care workers battling COVID-19 could use some time with the horses.“They say there are so many benefits in pet therapy, it doesn’t matter what the animal is the result is the same, it’s a reduction in stress,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Employees became emotional, sharing how the calmness of the horses was reminding them to remain calm.This story originally reported by Keith Lopez on PIX11.com. 830

Looking around the room where Hector Barajas spends the majority of his time, you could easily forget you’re in Mexico. American flags, G.I. Joes, and military dog tags line the walls.“I wanted to serve my country,” Barajas recalls, of his decision to join the United States military, where he served 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from 1995 to 2001.But he sits in Tijuana not by choice.“I was picked up by immigration and deported in 2004,” he said.The phrase “deported veteran” may not be a common part of most people’s vocabulary, but they exist—and there are many.The military does not keep and make public an official count of deported veterans, but the ACLU, which assists deported veterans, including Barajas, estimates the number is easily in the thousands.“One of the most difficult things is being separated from your kids,” Barajas says, referring to his 11-year old daughter who still lives back in California with her mother.  “I try to call her everyday in the mornings when she’s going to school, and we Skype.”Barajas was born in southern Mexico. His parents had crossed the border illegally some time earlier, and when Barajas turned 7, Barajas—along with his sister and a cousin—crossed over to meet them.  They succeeded and spent the majority of their upbringing in southern California.He considers the U.S. his only real home.“It’s where I grew up, it’s where I studied. I did everything in the United States.”It’s also where he took an oath to defend that very same country.But shortly after his enlistment ended in 2001, Barajas says he made a mistake. He was convicted of “shooting at an occupied motor vehicle” and sentenced to prison.  Not long after his release two years later, he was picked up and deported to Mexico.He made it back to the U.S.—“snuck” back home, as he says—and was able to remain until authorities stopped him following a fender bender in 2010. That lead to his re-deportation.He’s been fighting to become a permanent citizen ever since. California Governor Jerry Brown pardoned him last year, erasing that conviction off his record. That, he says, gives him hope that citizenship may not be far off.But in the meantime—and for the last 5 years—Barajas has devoted his time to helping other deported vets. He created the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana.“I basically started doing this full time and turning my apartment into a support house [in 2013] and then it just took off from there,” he says smiling.It’s a place where recently deported veterans can get help with benefits, compensations and benefits they may be owed, even medical assistance.He says they’ve had about 40 people in total utilizing the shelter as a temporary place to live. Barajas says one of the hardest parts about being deported is losing your support network and going through it all in what for many of them is a strange land.“When you get deported some of us really don’t know the country that we’re deported to. We may not have been to this country since we were children.”He wants anyone enlisted in the U.S. military to know one thing: just because you have legal permanent resident status and you join the military, it does not guarantee that you will automatically become a citizen. You have to actively pursue citizenship.“When I got my green card, it’s a legal permanent resident card,” Barajas says. “I thought it was permanent. But its not permanent.”As for the crimes he and other veterans may have committed that lead to their deportation, he says every makes mistakes—but they should be allowed to pay their debt to society and remain in the U.S.“Regardless of what these individuals have done they should still be allowed to stay in the U.S. with their families,” he said. Now, the only way he may be guaranteed to get back into the country he calls home is when he dies since he would be eligible for burial at Arlington National Cemetery. 3927

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - In a tearful news conference, the Riverside couple wounded when an off-duty Los Angeles police officer fatally shot their developmentally disabled son during what the lawman contends was an act of self- defense at a Costco in Corona decried the shooting Monday and said they presented no danger to the officer. ``I begged and told him not to shoot,'' Russell French told reporters at the Ayres Hotel in Corona. ``I said we have no guns and my son is sick. He still shot.'' Russell and Paola French's son, 32-year-old Kenneth French, was killed when Los Angeles Police Department Officer Salvador Sanchez opened fire the afternoon of June 14 inside the Costco store after what the officer's attorney has described as a life-threatening assault by Kenneth. Sanchez, a Southwest Division patrol officer who has been with the police department since May 2012, is on paid administrative leave. Dale Galipo, attorney for the French family, again insisted the shooting was not only unwarranted, but ``one of the most egregious shootings I have seen.'' Galipo said he filed a damages claim Monday against the LAPD and the city of Los Angeles, a precursor to a lawsuit. He did not specify a damages amount being sought. Kenneth French's parents suffered gunshot wounds to the back when the lawman opened fire, according to Galipo, who said earlier the injuries confirm ``that they were not facing in Officer Sanchez's direction at the time they were shot.'' He said the couple have had a difficult physical recovery. Galipo called for the release of surveillance video from inside the Costco store. The release has been blocked by a court order obtained by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, which is investigating the shooting to determine if charges are warranted. District Attorney Mike Hestrin declined to comment on the matter Friday. He told City News Service in June that the Corona Police Department had submitted its findings on the Costco incident without a specific recommendation, leaving it to the D.A.'s office to make an unbiased determination regarding potential criminality. Conflicting stories emerged over the circumstances, with the officer's attorney, David Winslow, insisting his client responded appropriately. Kenneth French, whom Galipo said was a diagnosed schizophrenic and nonverbal, was in the freezer section of the store at 480 N. McKinley St. when he came into contact with Sanchez, according to witnesses. Corona police said the off-duty officer was shopping with his family, holding his 18-month-old son in his arms, when, ``without provocation, (Kenneth French) assaulted the officer.'' According to Winslow, Sanchez was knocked to the floor and briefly lost consciousness. When he awoke, he found his son next to him, screaming. Winslow said his client ``had no choice but to use deadly force'' in self- defense. Galipo told reporters that Kenneth French, who had recently been taken off of his medications for undisclosed reasons, pushed or shoved the officer in the back in a food-sample line, but he denied that there was any serious threat. He also said French's parents tried to explain to the officer that their son was intellectually disabled. Galipo called Sanchez's response ``a complete over-reaction.'' He pointed out that, ``if anyone other than an off-duty police officer had shot three unarmed civilians in a Costco, that person would be in jail and facing criminal charges for murder.''
